Quality, Affordability and Employability

Our ethos here at LCA Business School is simple: to provide you with a competitively priced, top quality business education which is geared to the contemporary student’s need for flexibility. At the same time our aim is to ensure that our undergraduate, postgraduate and professional courses serve as a direct route to a rewarding career in business. Your future employability is therefore at the heart of everything we do. We have a longstanding partnership with a leading university (Anglia Ruskin University with campuses in Cambridge and Chelmsford) and have developed a focused portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses. All of our courses are designed to deliver the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in the real world. With the addition of full-time paid work placements in selected degrees and the opportunity for employment through our innovative timetabling, we have built a blend of applied academic learning and workplace experience that you need for a great future.

With a campus in the heart of Central London, and attracting students from well over 100 different countries around the world, LCA has twice been awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, further emphasising the quality of our teaching and learning.

Choosing the right institution for higher education is one of the most important decisions you will make. Your choice could shape the rest of your life: we want to help you make sure it is the right one. This is a great time to come and study at LCA so we hope you will take the time to find out more about us by reading this prospectus and then attend one of our open events.

Quality

Over time we have developed a range of business oriented undergraduate and postgraduate courses which have been created to meet the needs and aspirations of students in the 21st century."

“All these courses have been designed and are delivered so as to combine intellectual challenge with practical relevance, and thereby provide the foundation for successful business careers.”

Professor Lesley Dobree Deputy Vice-Chancellor

Anglia Ruskin University

The standard of the lecturers is superb – they really are excellent teachers – and the School is run more like a business than a college: if you don’t perform to standard, you’re out. That’s why LCA really does get the best out of its lecturers and students.”

Sam Wood graduated in 2014 with a first class honours degree in Business and Law.

I believe that LCA stands at the forefront of innovation in education and it is a School I would highly recommend. Studying at LCA was one of the best decisions I have made.”

Charles Jandreau, originally from Houston, USA, graduated in 2012 and now works for Grant Thornton.

The lecturers are amazing. They’re really supportive and really generous with their time. We have really easy advice at all levels of the school, right up to the top.”

Muhammad Kaleemullah, originally from Pakistan recently graduated with a 1st class honours in Applied Accounting.

LCA Business School’s courses meet the Government’s vision of a much more pluralistic, varied provision of higher education. Too many universities are more interested in research than teaching their students.”

Rt Hon Dr Vince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills speaking at the inauguration of LCA’s Charterhouse Street campus in 2011.

Studying at Anglia Ruskin University ensures that academic standards and the quality of learning opportunities built into your degree course are at the highest level.

Furthermore, we ensure that not only are our lecturers academically highly qualified, they also boast significant real-world business experience. But perhaps most important of all, they are all great teachers – adept at communicating their expertise in a lively, informative way that encourages students to develop critical and analytical abilities alongside detailed subject knowledge.

Affordability

Aside from having lower fees

than public universities, LCA actually

provides you with the core textbooks

needed in your modules. I know that

at most universities you have to pay

around £300 on books for classes,

whereas at LCA they are paid for you.

It saves about £60-70 per book!”

Annabel Lee is studying for a BSc International Business Management.

Page 7: LCA Prospectus 2015-2016

There is no getting away from it: studying for a university degree in the UK can be expensive. With many UK universities now charging students from the UK and elsewhere in the EU up to £9,000 a year for undergraduate tuition – and often substantially more to students from overseas and/or for postgraduate courses – we know that many prospective students, and their parents, worry about graduating with large debts or fear they cannot afford to go to university at all.

LCA Business School can help ease these worries in a number of ways.

For entry in September 2016, tuition fees start at £8,000 for a standard undergraduate degree programme.

But low tuition fees are only part of our story:

• The way in which we timetable your lectures and tutorials provides you with a great opportunity to work part-time. You could therefore put the money you earn from part-time work towards your fees and living costs instead of taking out a loan or relying on an advance from your parents. International students are entitled to work up to 20 hours a week during term time.

• Our academic timetable will also help you minimise your travel costs should you decide to continue living at home or find accommodation some distance from the campus.

• Your LCA fee includes a free copy of the core text book for each module – you will not receive a list of expensive books that need to be bought, as is common elsewhere.

• All eligible UK and EU students are entitled to take out a loan from Student Finance to cover tuition fees and living expenses. These loans do not have to be paid back until you are earning at least £16,910 a year.

5

At LCA, hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. It goes beyond academic achievement, as it opens a wide door of opportunities and rewards. Being a part of the institution means you can achieve anything, provided you stay focused and work hard.”

James Adebimpe is currently studying for a BSc in Business and Law.

Top Achievers Scholarship £2,000 award on the subsequent year’s tuition fee.

LCA offer up to 5 scholarships for the Top Achievers in Year II and Year III.

Employability

My lecturers at LCA helped me write a really effective CV when I was applying for the internship at King & King, and they gave me some invaluable tips for interview techniques which I found really helpful."

“As a result I got the internship at King & King, and now have a permanent job as a trainee accountant with the company so it’s worked out perfectly – I couldn’t have asked for it to be any better. I get to study theory at LCA and receive on-the-job training with my employers.”

Andrea Mascarin graduated in 2014 having completed a 2 year paid internship with King and King and has now received a permanent position.

LCA offering you the opportunity to get a work placement in the sector you’re studying is a real bonus because more than anything right now, employers value experience.”

Ola Szynkielewska graduated with a first class degree whilst completing a paid internship with Empowered Systems in her final two years. She has now secured a permanent job after proving invaluable throughout her internship.

The Business Skills module is really geared to delivering skills for the real world. I’ve actually found it more challenging than I expected but the great thing about it is the fact that it’s all about how we can better ourselves.”

Meddean Eltahir is currently studying for a BSc International Business Management.

At LCA Business School we believe that all students should expect a business-orientated education to lead to a business-orientated career and we do all we can to ensure this happens. • We take great pride in ensuring that students

are equipped with the necessary knowledge and understanding and those all-important transferable skills for the world of work. LCA students graduate with the required work ethic, finely tuned analytical and problem solving abilities and the ambition to overcome challenges. All of which go towards ensuring a successful future career.

With this aim in mind, all our undergraduate degree courses include a module in the first year on Business Skills.

• Our scheduling of lectures and tutorials optimise the chance of meaningful part-time work. A part-time job in the right sector can help hone your business acumen and boost your credentials with prospective employers.

• We have worked closely with key employers to design courses to meet the future needs of the industry. On our undergraduate and postgraduate courses within the field of Healthcare or Hospitality every student gets a high quality educational experience together with a paid full-time work placement to give them the perfect mix of practical and academic skills.

• Our careers advisors make use of the latest online facilities to ensure that before students start their search for a post-graduation job, they are knowledgeable about the varied and wide-ranging career opportunities that are open to them; they know how to construct an attractive employer-friendly CV, they have acquired successful interview techniques and they understand how to ensure that isometric and aptitude tests show off their strengths to the best advantage.

• At LCA we encourage our students to work closely with our key employers in order to maximise their chances of finding meaningful work during or after their degree. We regularly host Employers Fairs, which gives students the chance to gain valuable insight into the demands of employers in a variety of industries. At our last fair we hosted employers ranging from Hyatt in the hospitality industry to St Matthews in the healthcare industry.

LCA has not only enabled me

to gain my degree but provided the

platform for me to walk into a full time

job after graduation. I have been able

to balance my studies while gaining

experience in my field, something I could

not have done without the help, support

and first rate education of LCA.”

Study in the heart of London

As a student destination, the attractions of Central London are second to none.In addition to the multitude of world-renowned galleries, museums and well-known tourist attractions, the centre of London offers endless choices in terms of music venues, pubs, clubs, theatres and cinemas.

For sports fans, London is home to several Premiership football clubs and Wembley Stadium, Lords Cricket Ground and Twickenham rugby ground are also close at hand.

With a total student population of around 900,000 from 200 countries, London offers an unrivalled multicultural experience and is one of the most popular student destinations in the world.

LCA Business School is located in the very heart of London: between Hatton Garden – the centre of the diamond and precious metals trade – and Smithfield Market, one of London’s oldest historic markets. It is on the very edge of London’s business and financial district – and many of London’s most iconic landmarks, such as St Paul’s Cathedral, the Old Bailey, the Barbican and now the Shard are clearly visible from LCA.

Literally a stone's throw from Farringdon Station and a few minutes walk from Chancery Lane, LCA can be accessed quickly from anywhere to the north, south, east or west of London.

Page 12: LCA Prospectus 2015-2016

Your learning experience at LCA Business School

On all of our undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses you will have a minimum of 12 hours’ lectures and tutorials a week.In addition masterclasses and employability workshops are offered weekly – these are designed to give students the chance to clarify any misunderstandings and to debate important topics.

Outside of the core lectures, tutorials and masterclasses there are regular guest lectures and optional short courses.

LCA’s online campus, ‘My LCA’, provides students with a wealth of additional information, including lecture notes and access to a range of study material.

Each course module is delivered through a combination of large group lectures – where the main ideas and concepts are presented – and tutorials where students are broken into smaller groups for an interactive discussion and analysis of the lecture content.

At LCA, rather than spread out your lectures and tutorials unevenly over the course of the working week – as is usual at a more traditional university – we concentrate your 12 hours of contact time into four intensive three hour blocks, across just two or three days. These 12 hours per week are supported by masterclasses and guest lectures to give you an excellent educational package.

We believe our timetable gives you the best chance of securing a meaningful part-time job during the working week and thus the chance of simultaneously enhancing your employability and of easing any money worries you may have.

You will be assessed through a mix of assignments, examinations and group work.

At LCA there are great lecturers and a friendly learning environment. The placement programmes available are brilliant for anybody who wants work experience in their respective field. The staff is friendly and helpful at all times.”

Matthew Tasker joined LCA in 2013 and is studying for a BSc Business and Marketing.

The relatively small class size at LCA means that you really get to know your lecturers and they get to know you – you’re not simply a name on a register.”

Meddean Eltahir joined LCA in 2012.

I like having two full days of tuition – I find it helps me successfully juggle my other commitments.”

Angeline Sargeant is a 3rd year Business Studies degree student.

Support and facilities

LCA’s campus at 19 Charterhouse Street comprises six floors of teaching space, spread over a total area of some 65,000 square feet. The prestigious facilities, close to many iconic City of London landmarks, were refurbished to a high standard in early 2011. There are now five floors devoted to teaching and rooms range in size from some that can accommodate up to 200 students in a theatre style seating arrangement, to others that are perfect for highly interactive tutorials. All rooms boast the latest audio visual equipment and there’s air conditioning for when the weather gets warm.

Also within the Charterhouse Street campus are two computer labs as well as areas where you can meet and socialise with your fellow students. The learning resource centre on the 1st floor houses, amongst other relevant publications, copies of all the core text books and also provides desks and computers for quiet study. Students can also take advantage of three lending and two reference libraries in the local area – these include Shoe Lane Library, moments from LCA, the Barbican Library and City Business Library.

Furthermore, LCA students are entitled to the online facilities of Anglia Ruskin University for a huge range of business research, journals and papers.

You will also be appointed a Personal Tutor who will be available to support you throughout your studies.

Our team in Student Services based on the ground floor are on hand to provide help and support on both academic and non academic matters.

Student life isn’t just about academic work.Your time at LCA offers the opportunity not only to develop your academic and business knowledge but also to develop your social skills and confidence. It’s a time you will look back on as being a key turning point in your life.

As activities are planned and organised by students, members get the chance to practise key business skills including marketing, budgeting and managing people. Every activity or club is a chance to learn as well as enjoy.

In recent months the Society has organised a number of parties, sports events, visits to London attractions, talent contests as well as guest lectures featuring speakers from the world of business.

Making your views known

At LCA Business School, your opinions matter! LCA is committed to listening to its students and to taking their views into account in the development of our courses and their delivery. Over the course of your time at LCA, you will be offered a number of opportunities to provide feedback on your study course and your lecturers and to have your say generally on how the School is run. The School regularly conducts surveys and student representatives sit on a number of LCA’s Committees.

LCA’s Student Council serves as the official student voice within LCA. Chaired by the President, who is elected from amongst the student representatives sitting on the Council, the Council has the specific responsibility of representing the interests of the student body and of communicating any issues raised by faculty or administration to students.

Sitting on Student Council also builds key business skills for students: communication methods, formal meetings, minutes and decision making. This all adds to a graduate’s CV and goes some way to explaining the popularity and competition for places.

Undergraduate degree courses

LCA offers ten degree courses covering the main areas of business and management:

• BSc Business and Human Resource Management

• BSc Business and Law • BSc Business and Marketing• BSc Business and Tourism• BSc International Business Management• BSc Finance and Accounting• BSc Law and Accounting• BSc Business and Hospitality Management• BSc Business and Healthcare Management

All courses are offered for full-time study over three years and students can choose to start in either September, January or May.

In addition to providing students with a thorough grounding in business and management theory, there is a great deal of emphasis on the practical side of business. As a consequence of our academic staff remaining actively involved in business practice, cutting edge subject development is regularly brought to the classroom context.

Many of our Business and Management courses share a common first year. This allows you to gain a broad understanding of the key areas of business which will enable you to appreciate the importance of the different functions – such as HR, marketing, finance – to the overall success of the organisation. This will help you in your future career irrespective of the path you take.

We know it can be difficult to decide the exact direction you wish your studies to take. The structure of our business and management pathways allows you to transfer to one of our other degree courses, should you wish to.

You therefore do not need to decide your area of specialisation now; you can do so after you join LCA.

Do please note that some of our pathways do not offer the chance to change specialization once you have started at LCA, so do please contact us to ensure you understand the options open to you.

January startStudents joining in January attend summer school in their first year so that, by the September after they enrol, they are in a position to join the students who started their degree the previous September. January entrants then follow a standard academic calendar (September through to May) in their second and third years. Students starting in January therefore get the chance of completing their degree in two and a half years. In view of its academic calendar in the first year, the January start is sometimes referred to as the catch-up option.

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is recognised worldwide as offering one of the main routes to a senior managerial position.Over the course of your MBA at LCA Business School, you will acquire a deeper knowledge of the principal business functions including finance, marketing and human resource management and you will also gain a greater appreciation of the importance of the different functional areas to the overall success of the business.

Recognising that nowadays much business is conducted across international boundaries and that globalisation is a phenomenon that affects all organisations, the focus of LCA Business School’s MBA is very much on the specific challenges facing organisations that have global operations or that transact business internationally, be they cultural, ethical or environmental.

See pages 38 and 39 for details of the modules you will study.

The real-world case study – the pinnacle of LCA Business School’s MBA

As an alternative to the traditional end-of-course dissertation which many MBA courses include, LCA’s MBA has, at its pinnacle, a real-world case study.

The case study is given to students approximately two months before the end of course examination. Students spend time researching the organisation prior to the exam.

Students are allowed to bring their research on the organisation for reference into the examination. Students are assessed on the examination, plus previous research which is submitted with the exam script. It is our view that the analysis of an organisation provides an opportunity for students to draw on knowledge and experience gained from previous studies and to demonstrate their ability to cope with incomplete information in a way that reflects situations likely to be faced in their subsequent careers.

This course boasts two distinctive features. Firstly, the focus of the course will be on what is really needed for success in today’s constantly changing business environment: students will also study research; leadership; law, change management and the global commercial marketplace. Secondly, the emphasis will be on the practical rather than the theoretical and students will study, analyse and develop key tactical skills through the programme's hands-on approach to learning.
