SUPPORTING LBHA HELPS SAVE AND MAINTAIN OUR TRAILS, THE ARENA AT THE PARK , TRAYLOR
RANCH AND THE RURAL LIFESTYLE
Happy Trails to you! It’s November and the holidays are upon us. October was one of our busier months with the Annual Horse Shows and Tevis Cup. We had our Eagle Scout, Mason complete his Eagle Scout project at the Baldwin Lake Trail. The work to improve Sayles Canyon by Ele-gant Ears is underway thanks to the generous donations of so many wonderful organiza-tions, including the Loomis Basin Horsemen’s Association. We were able to kick off the donations with the first $1000, and were then able to donate half of the proceeds from our horse shows as well, totaling an amount of $1,987.50. We had unbelievable support of our Annual Horse Shows this year thanks to your dona-tions, volunteering, and sponsorships. At the last minute people came out of the woodwork to lend a hand and ensure that ―the show must go on!‖ Our very knowledgeable judge, Amanda Winger of Amanda Winger Performance Horses, donated a lesson package at both shows. We sold raffle tickets for the lesson packages and the proceeds went to our horse show fund. We'd like to thank Miss Winger for her support and generosity. We’ve all had so much fun this season, and we hope that we've made your horse activities both exciting and fulfilling. Our goal is for LBHA to be a fun group to which to belong, as well as a great way to give back. And that brings me to my next point: I know there are many shy members out there that have been waiting in line to be on the LBHA board. If you are one of them, please consider running so that you can contribute to this wonderful cause. It takes very little time and is a good way to make new friends in addition to all it contributes to the local community. Sadly, our secretary is stepping down and her charming personality and interjection of com-edy into the minutes is going with her. Shirley Koch, thank you so much for a wonderful year. You will truly be missed (we do know where to find you, though).
I hope to see all of you at the November meeting, ready to volunteer for the LBHA Board or nominate the sleeping member next to you.

TRAYLOR RANCH NATURE RESERVE
Fortunately there is not much to re-port on the Traylor Ranch Nature Re-serve. The trails are in great shape. So good in fact that our last work day was cancelled. We’re gearing up for Fall and Winter and preparing for such. Get out now and enjoy our trails.
They are especially good for you be-ginner trail riders as they are easy, nice trails with good footing and level terrain. If you see anything while out on the trails that needs maintenance or re-pair, please let me know and I’ll be happy to get a crew out there and make it right. Enjoy the weather.

Loomis Basin Horsemen’s Association Minutes— October 2011 Round Table Pizza Meeting Room, Loomis The meeting was called to order at 7:00 by President, Denise Howell. November is the month to nominate candidates for office. Please consider volunteering. Linda Potter reported that Jerry has been very busy on the tractor working at Traylor Ranch and currently conditions are good. Kathy Dombrowski reported on the Eagle Scout Project and the results of the very successful horse show. Linda Potter gave a detailed report on the progress of the Sayles Canyon Project and thanked the many in-dividuals and organizations that have helped. A motion was made to make a second donation to the Sayles Canyon project from the Trail/Arena fund. The money was half of the profits from the 2011 Horse Shows and the amount is $987.56. The motion was passed unanimously. The other half of the Horse Show profits go to the Traylor Ranch fund. Bob Sydnor’s trail report details and great pictures are in the October newsletter on the website. The boul-ders are now in place along Twin Rocks and Boulder Road so no more parking for the 'cheapskate gate' at that location. -- Poppy Pass - Tevis Sweep Riders and the Tevis trail machine . Bob also commented about the Tevis which was unique in several respects this year. The meeting was adjourned at 7:55pm. Shirley Koch, Secretary
What Makes a Horse Yawn? by: Mary DeLorey, DVM Q: I would like to know what makes a horse do his mouth like he is yawning. Does this help the horse get lots of air in his lungs like with people? Is it a sign of anything in particular? via e-mail A: Unfortunately, there is no simple answer that explains why a horse "yawns." There are some veterinary medical pro-fessionals that firmly believe that the behavior we attribute to yawning in the horse is actually a manifestation of pain or discomfort. Some believe that so strongly that they propose that a horse only "yawns" when he is uncomfortable. Cer-tainly, many horses will "yawn" when experiencing colic pain, but no one knows precisely why the horse responds this way or what the "yawn" might do to make him feel better. Horses also might "yawn" if they have oral pain, and some horses "yawn" just after removing the bridle, presumably to stretch jaw muscles. At one time, many hypothesized that the horse might be trying to equalize pressure inside the in-ner ear much like humans often do when driving in the mountains or riding in airplanes. This has not been proven. We have all seen our horses "yawning" while seemingly happy and quiet in their stalls or pens. And sometimes horses will "yawn" close to meal times as if they are anxiously anticipating their hay or grain. With so many seemingly contra-dicting triggers, it is very hard to imagine a single cause for "yawning." About the only thing we're fairly sure of is that the trigger is not the same as that of a yawn in humans, which is in re-sponse to transient drops in blood oxygen levels. That big intake of fresh air increases oxygen in the lungs and there-fore in the vascular system. However, horses do not appear to be inhaling when they "yawn." The most important thing to keep in mind if your horse seems to be yawning inappropriately is that it can often be a sign of abdominal pain. Take quick stock of the situation and make sure there are no other signs of colic. If you have doubts, observe your horse closely for a few minutes and if you still have questions, call your veterinarian. Most times when your horse "yawns," however, he is likely to be just fine and doing what horses do.

Dear Members,
Elegant Ears Mule Association would like to extend a huge thanks to LBHA for the tremendous donation made to the Sayles Can-
yon Trail Head project. You started us off with a bang by pledging $1000.00. That set a great example that was used in the fund
drive letter that was sent out. Then you top it off by donating an additional $987.56, which was ½ the profits from the horse shows,
passed by a unanimous vote. We also received $1550.00 in donations from five individuals who belong to LBHA, so it shows how
LBHA members support trails, trail heads, equestrian camping areas and protecting the use of equestrian areas. Jerry and I are
proud to be members of LBHA and appreciate all of the work this organization does to protect, improve and fight for the equestrian
life style we all enjoy!
Thanks again,
Linda Potter, Coordinator
Elegant Ears Mule Association
ARENA Parks has been watering the arena in the early morning and we are still get-ting a little wet spot on the bleacher side of the ring. Sorry for the wet, but by midday it is better and so far no big complaints. Even with the horse shows we had to water a little in the afternoon. So if the extra wet area bothers you, ride a little later. With the weather cooling down, I will let John know that needs to back off on the water. Don’t forget that you can have your trainer come out to the arena to give you lessons. It is easy and simple. The trainer will need to fill out the Arena request form and check the box that they are a trainer. Then then need to send certificates of Insurance with an attachment showing where in the policy both LBHA and Placer County is listed as an also insured. There is no cost and you and your trainer will be Sharing the Arena with other rid-ers. You will also have to contact LBHA for each use day, time of start and finish. Form is available at http://www.garlic.com/~lbha/ArenaRequest1.pdf . It is preferred that the numbers of riders with a trainer be no more than 5-9. If you have a question, please contact

2011 Tevis Cup Sweep Riders of the Sierras Tevis S.O.S. Team #2 departing Foresthill, Oct. 8, 2011 at 8:17 P.M.
by Robert H. Sydnor, AERC Trail Master; Tevis Trail Maintenance Crew; and LBHA Trail Chairman
Preamble
During the 100-mile Tevis Cup and many 50-mile AERC endurance rides, the Sweep Riders of the Sierras perform a vital mission: the safety of the participants (horses and riders). The Sweep Riders of the Sierras deserve our sustained appreciation and gratitude for their important work. The Sweep Riders of the Sierras are typically un-heralded because they are not the vanguard; instead they faithfully follow-up behind the "Last Rider". This photo-collage showcases their professional work, as an integral part of the Tevis Team.
We express our abiding appreciation to Randy Hackbarth, Virgil Toothaker, and Lynn Seeley, officers of the Sweep Riders of the Sierras, who worked diligently under Tevis Ride Manager Chuck Stalley for a safe and success-ful 2011 Tevis Cup. Lynn Seeley is a long-time member of Loomis Basin Horsemen's Association.
Photo-Collage of the Sweep Riders of the Sierras
At left: Sweep Riders of the Sierras manager Randy Hackbarth goes over last-minute instructions to her S.O.S. team #2 at Foresthill. Annette, Virgil, and Alex are ready to mount-up and ride forward. At center: S.O.S. Team #2 Leader Virgil Toothaker has been riding in the Sierras for many decades and is the 2011 Chairman of Sweep Riders of the Sierras. He has served as a veteran AERC Ride Manager for Gold Country AERC ride, plus lots of Tevis Cups. He knows the Western States Trail like the palm of his hand, a special advantage that he will adroitly utilize in the full moonlight this evening. Study the special equestrian communications vest that he wears: the radio and flashlights are readily available while he is in the saddle. The radio antenna is built into his special eques-trian helmet. Virgil is dressed warmly with multi-layers because the harsh night-time temperatures in the Middle Fork of the American River (with biting cold winds up the canyon) will fall rapidly into the forties. At right: S.O.S. vice-chairman Randy Hackbarth and Annette Silva-Phillips at Foresthill, getting ready to saddle-up and depart. In the background is Alex and her crew-member. Annette is confident and smiling, looking forward to this ride into the night.
At left: Annette Silva-Phillips rides a large Ten-nessee Walker, 15.3 hands-high. Annette is a petite lady, only 5'-0" tall, but she rides like she is "Ten Feet Tall" (=allusion to the book title by Julie Suhr). Annette has been diligently training for this S.O.S. mission for a long time, and now is her shining moment — in the full moonlight. Both horse and rider possess great temerity and abid-ing confidence.
At right: The Out-Timers at Foresthill notified the Sweep Riders (Annette and Alex) that the last Tevis rider has clocked-out and departed. The Tevis Full-Moon is high in the sky with no cloud-cover. Fortunately, there is no wind, just falling evening temperatures. Everything is set, and the vital mission unfolds splendidly. The long-awaited moment has finally arrived, and the S.O.S. riders nimbly mount-up and move forward with cheerful alacrity. The S.O.S. riders cheerfully hope for the best, but cogently prepare for the worst. This S.O.S. team is keenly trained, presciently focused, and very tough.

Sweep Riders Epilogue
Fortunately, there were no accidents and incidents on the Tevis Trail leading westward from Foresthill, down the California Loop to Francisco's. Sweep Rider team #2 exited through White Oak Flat where their spouses were waiting patiently after midnight with trucks and horse trailers.
The Tevis Trail Maintenance workers (under Michael Shackelford and Greg Kimler) had already done their job, working all summer in 103F heat, using the new Echo Valley SK-650 Trail Machine, getting ready for the 2011 Tevis Cup.
The Tevis Trail was well-marked a few days earlier using white chalk, orange ribbons, and yellow glow-sticks by Lynn Seeley, Deputy Ride Manager for Tevis. With sustained preparation, everything was properly in-place for a safe Tevis Cup. Out of 176 starters, 123 riders safely completed 2011 Tevis, so the completion rate was nearly 70%.....one of the highest in 55 years of Tevis history.
If readers want to financially support this vital mission for AERC endurance riding safety, please visit the website of the Sweep-Riders-of-the-Sierras at this address: http://sos.wstrail.org/
Many members of the Loomis Basin Horsemen's Association have previously served in Sweep Riders of the Sierras over a period of three decades. We LBHA members appreciate their dedicated service.
During the famous Tevis Cup Ride our LBHA Horse Shows were well attended. Photos of the Shows.
