I want to welcome many old and many new customers to the 9th Annual Lazy H Ranch Kansas Bull Sale. We want each and every one of you to know how thankful we are that you have chosen LHR as your choice for quality Angus and Charolais bulls. What a year to own beef cattle! As I prepare this sale catalog, I am just returning from the NWSS in Denver where we had a lot of interest in the genetics we are raising here at LHR. Our partnership heifer we sold topped the Foundation Female sale and her current data has put her in the top 1% of the breed. The excitement I have for her is the same excitement I have for this set of bulls and for each of the operations they will enter into. I feel every bull in this sale has a place in the cattle industry and will contribute to providing the world with a better eating experience. Input prices are high, so as cow calf producers we need to capitalize on all our inputs by using the best genetics available to produce the best product possible. Both the Angus and Charolais herds we have built are centered on cow families. Look at the bottom of each of the footnotes and you will fi nd fl ush brothers and maternal brothers to Lots throughout the catalog to team up and use in building your herd. Our goal at LHR is to separate ourselves from other breeders and provide the best product with the best customer service for your program. “Interest Retained in Bulls”We are retaining 1/2 semen revenue sharing interest in the bulls cataloged. The buyer will be purchasing 1/2 interest,

100% possession, 100% salvage value and complete control of the bull. If and when we would like semen on any of

these bulls, we would collect the semen in the off breeding season at your convenience and our expense. If you decide to collect semen it is 100% yours. In the event semen sales develop, LHR and the owner will share in the revenues and expenses equally. If the buyer leases or sells ownership in the bull, LHR retains its revenue semen sharing interest.

“LHR Breeding Guarantee”The bulls that sell are fertile to the best of our knowledge and are backed by a 90-day breeding season guarantee. If, while breeding cows, they sustain injury to their reproductive system, making them unable to service females we will provide you with a satisfactory replacement if available, or issue credit equal to your purchase minus salvage value that may be used toward the purchase of any animal in the following years sale. We request that you notify us before you cull the injured or infertile bull by letter within ten days of the injury. American Angus Association sale terms and conditions do apply.

About “Safe for Heifers”We put a lot of stress and emphasis in this catalog on which bulls to use for heifers and which to use on cows. We feel it is our duty as your seed-stock supplier to give you all the information possible when it comes to calving. We don’t necessarily know 100% that this information will help with determining whether or not these future herd bulls will be calving ease or not, but we do have insight on what history tells us through the following tools: Actual birth weights, actual phenotype and structure of the animal, CED and BW EPD’s as well as the history of what both the paternal and maternal sides of genetics have done. Again, when choosing one of our herd bulls for heifers, talk to us fi rst and let us know what you will be breeding them to and what your expectations are. We do feel that if you follow these guidelines and the remarks we have cataloged your experience calving from LHR bulls will be very satisfying!

How to Use the Data on Each Bull Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in fi rst-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to fi rst-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Carcass Weight (CW) EPD - Expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Marbling Score (MB) EPD - Expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area (REA) EPD - expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

$VALUE INDEXES $Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.

Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

Adj. Weaning Wt. / Ratio - Weaning weights are standardized to a calf age of 205 days and a mature dam equivalent. If a natural born calf a ratio is exhibited against his contemporary group. If embryo transplant calf, all ET’s ratio 100.

Adj. Yearling Wt. / Ratio - Adjusted 365-day weights are computed to adjust an actual yearling weight taken by the breeder to a standard animal age (365-day) and age of dam (this adjustment takes place

“%IMF and UREA”We recommend the %IMF and UREA scores to be used strictly as a tool. Do not use these adjustments directly with other bulls in the breed, but use them to compare bulls in their contemporary groups do to the conditioning process in which we chose to grow these bulls. It has been a relative fact that by conditioning cattle with more back fat these individuals would score higher on their marbling scores and rib eye areas. Our goal as a seed stock producer is just not to produce bulls that have great numbers and genetics but to grow these bulls so that their futures are not harmed by how we condition them early on in their lives before breeding season. We want each and every one of these bulls to go work serving and settling your cowherds without sacrifi cing condition, growth and most importantly, longevity. These bulls are an investment, not just another addition to your herd but what the future of your herd depends on. This is why we grow and condition these bulls on a high roughage ration from weaning to sale day. On the other hand we do concentrate on bringing you quality carcass genetics. We do this by testing our genetics through the Proven Sires program by way of killed carcass data. We believe more in the data we can see rather than an image. Also, do to how these bulls are grown, we have added an index regarding REA per 100 pounds of weight for you to use in determining which bull best meets your criteria. Adj. %IMF / Ratio - is the amount of desirable fat or marbling in the ribeye muscle adjusted to 365 days. Ultrasound predicts the percent fat, which the USDA grader visually tries to evaluate. All animals in a contemporary ratio against each other.

Adj. Rib-eye Area / Ratio - is measured in square inches and adjusted to 365 days of age. REA is positively and highly correlated with retail product. The heritablity of this trait is moderately high meaning that the trait will be passed on to progeny.

Adj. Rib-eye Fat / Ratio - external fat thickness measured between the 12th and 13th rib.

Adj. Rump Fat / Ratio – external fat thickness measured on the rump.

Index REA/CWT (Square inches of Ribeye per 100 pounds of Body Wt.) – ( Adj. Square inch REA divided by Adj. Scan weight = index) This index is a good indicator of muscling/cutability/retail product. An index range of .90 to 1.10 is in the target range. However, if you need to improve muscling or ribeye, select animals with a 1.10 index or greater. 365-day adjusted fi gures are being used in order for you to more accurately compare one animal to another.

This set of bulls went on feed test for just a little over 100 days, on a ration consisting of hailed out wheat hay, CRP and 1% corn/distillers for added protein. The ADG turned out to be 4.79. This in my mind is extraordinary when considering the feed stuffs and the hot summer we experienced. I give most credit to our cooperator herd in South Central Missouri on the bulls with 9700 #’s, as these bulls were developed from birth to weaning on a strip grazing technique with no creep and no feed stuffs to the cowherd during the time of raising the calf other than the grasses they were run on. Many as you can see are fl ush brothers, so a great opportunity to take advantage of this for those of you running larger pas-tures that are trying to keep track of sire identifi cation and uniformity.”
