Kundalahalli: Sankara Group of Hospitals has been in the forefront to provide for better eye care especially to children. There are many programs, like Swagatham, Maithri & Rainbow, being run simultaneously to provide children with proper preventive & curative eye care. It has been the constant endeavour of Sankara Group to work towards freedom from preventable and curable blindness.Speaking from the point of productive contribution of humans to society, of the loss to society of productive human beings due to visual impairment, chi ldhood bl indness contr ibutes significantly since the total number of blind-years suffered by a blind child is more than those suffered by a person who becomes blind in adulthood or in old age. Though accurate data on the prevalence of childhood blindness in the developing world are not available, it is estimated that the total number of blind children is much less than the number of blind adults. However, it is estimated that the cumulative number of blind-person-years worldwide due to childhood blindness ranks second only after the cumulative number of blind-person-years due to cataract blindness. This indicates a need to attempt effective control of childhood blindness. The school going years are the formative years for determining the child's physical, intellectual & behavioral development. Any problem in the vision during the

*

formative years can hamper intellectual development, maturity & performance of the child in his/her future lifeChildren usually do not complain of defective vision. They may not even be aware of their problem. They adjust to the poor eyesight by moving closer to the blackboard, holding the book closer to the eyes squeezing the eyes, and even a v o i d i n g w o r k r e q u i r i n g v i s u a l concentration. This evades early detection. Timely detection of these problems and their correction can tremendously improve the child's potential during the formative years.Visual impairment can be drag in the life of a child, his/her family & the society. Periodic screening of all children helps in early identification of visual defects & prescription/use of corrective spectacles. We, at Sankara Eye Hospital, Bangalore are involved in screening school going children to help detect the undetected blindness amongst them. We have found this percentage of children to be almost 5% amongst urban children and 10% amongst those belonging to the lower socio economic strata. There are 4.2 million children in India who have visual impairment. In conclusion, provided with the necessary eye care at the proper time, especially to children, not only does the individual lead a fuller life, the society also benefits both in terms of healthier, contributive people and productive environment. So do not wait to get your children's eye tested. DO it now.

Sindhu Darshan - A Symbol of Multi-Dimensional Cultural Identity and Communal Harmony

Ladakh: Sindhu Darshan Festival is celebrated on the full moon day (Guru Poornima) in the month of June. It stretches on for three days. The main reason behind the celebration of Sindhu Darshan Festival is to endorse the Indus River (Sindhu River) as an icon of the communal harmony and unity of India. The festival is also a symbolic salutation to the courageous soldiers of the country, who endanger their life to save ours. Sindhu Darshan Festival was first time organized in the year 1997.

A l a r g e n u m b e r o f participants from different parts of the country participate in Sindhu Darshan Festival. They bring water from the river of their own state in earthen pots and immerse these pots in the Sindhu River. Consequently, the waters of all rivers mingle together, thereby symbolizing the multi-dimensional cultural identity of the country. The first day of the Sindhu Darshan Festival witnesses a

reception ceremony for the participants, organized on the banks of Sindhu at Shey. This r e c e p t i o n c e r e m o n y i s conducted by a joint association of Ladakh Buddhist Association, Shia Majlis, Sunni Anjuman, Christian Moravian Church, H i n d u T r u s t a n d S i k h G u r u d w a r a P r a b h a n d a k Committee. As a part of the ritual, fifty senior Lamas conduct a prayer on the banks of the river. A series of cultural programs is also presented by the artists from various states of the country. A sightseeing tour is organized for the participants and the day comes to an end with a bonfire at night. After the c u l t u r a l p r o g r a m s a n d sightseeing trip, a puja is organized on the second day of the Sindhu Darshan Festival. On the third day, the participants get ready for the departure.

MIND WORKS-37We are WHAT we think about: Thought creates RealityBy UK Athikkal

-----------Let us monitor our own thoughts for a while. If we are under the spell of a negative mood most of our thoughts will be on what we don't like. We focus our attention on all that can go wrong. Then we need not be surprised when what we don't like turns up in our life. If you think about all the things that are wrong in your relationship, then you will continue to attract what you don't want, even what you don't like in yourself.

You need to monitor what you think about. Peacemakers never put their thoughts on what they don't want, only on what they intend to create and what they intend to manifest.

Thoughts are magnetic, and thoughts have a frequency. As you think thoughts, they are sent out in to the universe, and they magnetically attract all like things that are on the same frequency. Everything sent out returns to the source – you.

You are like a human transmission tower, transmitting a frequency with your thoughts. If you want to change anything in your life, change the frequency by changing your thoughts. Your current thoughts are creating your future life. What you think about the most or focus on the most will appear as your life. Your thoughts become things.

If we observe the people around and critically examine their thought patterns expressed through their behavior we can easily establish the direct correlat ion of their l i fe's

happenings with their thought processes. Ram is always worried about suffering from various illnesses; his conversation with his friends or relatives is generally on these topics. It can be verified that he often suffers from various imaginary and physical ill health issues. If he is an employee working in an organization you may observe absenteeism on health grounds will be maximum in his case.

Now compare Ram's case with that of his peer Shyam, who is positive minded and leads a healthy life style. His conversations are generally focused on healthy mind and body related topics. His experiences in life support his beliefs and expectations.

The environment we create at home with regard to the above situations has a direct impact on the molding of the mental make ups of the younger generation who learn and grow in these surroundings. Awareness of these aspects of our thought patterns and willingness to work on these will be able to recreate positive changes in our lives.

MOVIE Splice 2010

One thousand Americans stop smoking every day - by dying.

Splice is a monster movie with a whole lot of soul. Toronto-based Vincenzo Natali's sobering, spectacularly entertaining sci-fi thriller stars Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody as genetic-engineering superstars who cross an ethical line in the course of splicing DNA from different animals to create hybrids that may revolutionize science and earn their boss's big pharma company untold billions.

What makes Splice such a memorable experience is not simply the clever dialogue, awesome effects, superior cinematography and Canadian content, but the depth of the major players and the believability of their performances under frankly unbelievable circumstances.

The result of Elsa and Clive's leap into the unknown is something else again. Initially, it is a thing only a mother could love, and Elsa does. Looking a little like a plucked chicken with nascent human arms,

four-fingered hands, tri-articulated lower legs like a deer, long tail, and eyes as old as the universe, the creature is helpless as a newborn.

Little Dren (Abigail Chu) soon becomes big Dren, played with an uncanny mix of rich humanity and alien oddity by French newcomer Delphine Chaneac. A seamless 70/30 mix of real flesh and computer animation, Chaneac's character is a notable addition to the pantheon of unforgettable cinema monsters. She is also heartbreakingly vulnerable, and scary as hell -an archangel with the devil inside.

Yes, it's bloody. Yes, it has its own transgressive inclinations. Yes, it's the most stimulating package of art, entertainment and shivery scientific speculation we'll see on any screen this year. Do not miss it. And bring on the sequel.

important to recollect that the positive effects are due to our long evolutionary links to having a preference for being in natural environments.

Located near Hindustan Uniliver, Sanctuary Energizing Life takes you away from urbanized, complex environments to more natural environments. It has the power to relax, calm, heal, re-connect, and strengthen human beings.

Rasheda Sultan Reilard, the CEO of Sanctuary, converted the 50 year old ruins into a worthy prototype reflecting nature's contrivance. “It just took 5 weeks to clear every thing and rebuild to this level.” says Ms. Rasheda. Everything is to do with nature in this premise. Within an acre's land, it has organic farm, walk-in bird cage, dance floor, tents, art room, trampoline, and cycling & skating. The 100 year old pupil tree will soon be used to train mountaineering. Children, adults and senior citizens will have great moments spending their time here. The environment here

focuses on what the environment allows individuals to be and to do.

Sanctuary reminds us of John Keats and his verses, “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness! Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun.”

Energy is an element of life that is so subtly interwoven with form that it is one, in much the same manner as space and time are inextricably linked in union. Energy is a motive. It is intelligent beyond the mind's ability to reason. While it is a force that can be subject to applications that deny its highest expression, energy is always imbuing life with the motive to expand and evolve.

All people and all forms of life can be nurtured and supported to their highest expression in a natural environment such as Sanctuary. This is the fundamental purpose of this principle. It is greatly facilitated by the intention to perceive the original motive and ultimate expression of life energy as it passes through your field of awareness.
