As a member of Generation X, I can testify we often feel stuck “in between” participation in major events in American history and cultural life. In our formative years the Cold War captured parents’ fear for our safety at school. We saw the yellow and black fallout shelter signs in the hallway, but we also heard Sting singing to us of how the Russians loved their children, too. We were also the first generation whose entire school experience happened after the civil rights movement and integration of the school system. Television was our primary entertainment, and we grew up watching cartoons like Fat Albert on Saturday mornings, Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood in the afternoons, and All in the Family, The Jeffersons, and Good Times at night. We don’t have any personal memories of the civil rights movement, but we do remember growing up “in between” when the results of legislation and court cases slowly worked themselves out in daily life in communities, neighborhoods, churches, and schools. Now, as we all continue to struggle from that “in between” place where things have changed and are changing, but not yet attained the full measure of justice and peace for which God created us, the Gen X way of being “in between” may help us bridge the gap between where we have been and where we are going. February is Black History Month, a time to remember the witness of all those who gave themselves for the cause of justice. I am especially grateful to remember the witness of those “in between” people who worked with vision and hope every day and who kept the dream alive in ways that seemed small at the time but had great impact. Fannie Lou Hamer, who said she was “sick and tired of being sick and tired,” helped organize Mississippi’s Freedom Summer. And in between, on the bus ride to the 1964 Democratic National Convention, she helped keep spirits up by singing, her favorites being “Go, Tell It On the Mountain” and “This Little Light of Mine.” Sarah Murphy started a school for sharecroppers’ children at the edge of Cedartown, GA in the early 1930’s. When she realized the children had no homes, either because they were orphaned or parents too poor to care for them, Sarah took them in, providing shelter and food for them on faith in between until her dream merged with Ethel Harpst’s, and the United Methodist ministry of Murphy-Harpst Children’s Home was born. Osceola McCarty spent most of her eighty-seven years in Mississippi as a washer woman. She had to quit school in the sixth grade, never married, never had children, and never learned to drive, just considered her work cleaning clothes to be a blessing. She spent almost nothing, living in her old family home, cutting the toes out of shoes if they did not fit right and binding her ragged Bible with Scotch tape to keep Corinthians from falling out. And in between, over the decades, her pay -- mostly dollar bills and change -- grew to more than $150,000, which she contributed to the dream by giving it to the University of Southern Mississippi for scholarships for black students. Even though it may appear small and insignificant, a lot happens in between. As we celebrate the witness of all those who have gone before, in between now and the fulfillment of the dream, we, too, are changing and growing closer to one another and closer to God’s vision. I invite us to join one another “in between” for that is where the kingdom comes, one step, one gift, one heart at a time. Living well in the time “in between” requires commitment, faith, resolve, and hope that has feet to keep us grounded in reality and wings to allow vision to soar. Like Fannie Lou Hamer, we commit to God’s mission “in between” by being present in worship, giving praise to God each step of the way. Like Sara Murphy, we commit to God’s mission “in between” by serving the needs we see in our community, especially when we do it together as on the Lewis Day of Service. Like Osceola McCarty, we commit to God’s mission “in between” by giving what we can, disciplining ourselves to give regularly, with faith that every contribution, large or small, is equally meaningful to God’s kingdom vision. Committing to these practices “in between” puts our faith in action and plants it more deeply in our hearts. It points us in the right direction for making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 14, a fine day for celebrating God’s immense love for us and committing ourselves to love God with our presence, service, and gifts – “in between,” now, and always.

Beth’s Blessings

through home repair and children’s ministries. www.arm-al.org

Alabama Rural Ministries (ARM)Friday - Monday

October 5-8, 2018Members of LMUMC will be going on a family mission trip in October to assist Alabama Rural Ministries (ARM). ARM exists to end substandard housing in rural Alabama. ARM believes every person deserves a home that is safe, warm, and dry. To this end, ARM extends the love of Christ through home repair and children’s ministry.

Repair – ARM focuses on sharing the gospel through home repair.

Experience – As an intergenerational group, the team will not onlyexperience the joys of helping a family with repairs, but also gain an increased understanding of Christ’s call to serve.

Achieve – As a team, develop personal relationships and buildupon their relationship with Christ. In Deut. 15:11, we are commanded to be generous to the poor and needy among us. The early church in Acts formed such a bondthat there was no poverty among them. It is God’s desire that everyone has their needs supplied, and it is up to the body of Christ to see that through.

Culture – Working in Macon County, home to historical Tuskegee University, the George Washington Carver Museum, and Tuskegee Airmen. Macon County is one of the poorest in Alabama, with 33% of the population below poverty.

Help – No one is too young or old to serve with ARM and help with home repairs.

If you would like to help support the team, please mark your donation as “Domestic Mission.” Thank you for your support.

Manna = “What Is IT?” things you may be wondering about. .

“What is this “Realm” that I’ve been hearing about?” you may ask. “It’s like a giant toolbox for your church.” Realm stands for “REAL Ministry” • It’s not geeky or complicated. It’s approachable, useful and a part of everyday life. It’s on the screens you normally use and available whenever you need it. Download the app today! • It provides a fresh new way for everyone in the church to stay connected as a church family helping you build relationships that are lasting. • It provides group leaders with contact information to keep their small group members informed! • It provides each church member up-to-date accounting of their individual giving. • It makes sure people know what’s going on!

If you were on “The City” you will experience a smooth transition to “Realm” by the end of February. If you have any questions, call the church office.

252 Basics is a curriculum designed for Pre-Kindergarten through 4th Grade. “What does 252 mean?” It’s not our street address, nor the number of questions a 2nd grader can ask in 20 minutes. Instead, everything we teach in 252 Basics is based on one of three basic, but powerful truths modeled by Jesus in Luke 2:52 (hence 252) • I need to make the wise choice. • I can trust God no matter what. • I should treat others the way I want to be treated. The curriculum is designed to provoke discovery and invite kids into a new understanding of how to grow in relationship with Jesus Christ. Each week we join Children’s Choir and Intergenerational Meal.

You may have noticed a vase of glass stones in the Church Office or on the altar during worship on Sundays. Each of these stones represents an

individual who has asked for prayer during Monday Night Rush Hour, so far this year. We thought it would be interesting to see how many lives

are touched by this new ministry in 2018 “At the Crossroads.”

Come and join the Evangelism and Prayer Ministries in this opportunity to reach out to these souls

who are hurting and in need of a word of encouragement, a drink of cool water, and a whispered prayer.

There are many ways you can be involved: • Hold a sign and wave • Pass out water bottles
