Lay Volunteers International Association (LVIA), is an Italian NGO founded in 1964. Currently, is operating in 11 African Countries implementing projects of sustainable development. LVIA started its deeds in Tanzania since 1984 when, after the agreement with the Catholic Diocese of Dodoma, an integrated rural development project was started in Kongwa District. Vision and Mission The vision of LVIA's development interventions is to empower people to develop more effective livelihood strategies, increasing the value of their assets and creating new opportunities for living a healthy and productive life. This will be achieved through the identification and wise use of local resources, supporting local initiatives and innovations and by promoting appropriate technologies to tackle poverty in a sustainable way (mission). Activities or area of focus/specialization Water: deep borehole realisation, water schemes with the local communities involvement, windmill and gravity water schemes, water resources management through GIS techniques; Health and sanitation: rehabilitation of sanitary centres, realisation of latrines, sensitisation campaigns; Agriculture: formation on agricultural techniques, breeding, spreading of animal traction techniques, introduction of improved seeds and crops resistant to drought, capacity building to local farmers organization, promotion of the value chain approach for the commercialization of oilseeds (sesame, sunflower, groundnuts, etc); Income generating activities: creation and promoting of saving and credit services (SACCOS) and grain banking (warehouse receipt system). Specific Objectives Obj.1 To improve the access to safe and affordable drinking water and sanitation facilities and services in 7 villages of Chamwino and Kongwa districts; Obj.2 To strengthen the capacities of 2 District Water Departments and local community to plan, develop and manage water supply and sanitation facilities and services, profitably interacting with both public and private sector.

Approach The specific contribution of this action in the context of improving the existing situation is pursued through an integrated approach of intervention: increasing water access and availability, increasing water quality, increasing sanitation facilities and reinforcing capacities and knowledge of the population in water and sanitation related issues. Every activity and every planning and implementing step will be carried out through a strong participative approach: community mobilization is especially addressed during project appraisal and implementation to promote community ownership at all levels. Thus the Capacity Building component is fully integrated with the Water and Sanitation Sector of intervention. Direct beneficiaries: 7 villages of Kongwa and Chamwino Districts, estimated number of 27.793 people.

Specific Objectives Obj.1: Raise the awareness, recognition and capacity of the communities and local partner’s staff in relation to the previously identified locally available economic potentials and how these are means to improve the community’s livelihoods and reduce poverty; Obj.2: Promote diversified and efficient production of commercial goods of marketable value; Obj.3: Develop efficient, effective and profitable marketing linkage between local producers and local markets; Obj.4: Develop the utilisation of locally available commercial services;

Overall description The aim of the programme is to improve the livelihood status of the rural communities in the regions of Dodoma and Morogoro, through strategies for diversifying and increasing efficiency in production of agricultural commercial products and improving its linkage with local markets. The beneficiaries formed different team according to the business they want to run. Main business has been the construction of 6 PMCs (Producer Marketing Unit) dealing with sunflower oil production (managing 6 oil expeller plants) and marketing of products. Moreover the project has supported the activity of teams dealing with honey, salt, flour and chicken production and selling. Direct beneficiaries: 650 households, 5680 individuals.

Specific Objectives To guarantee the real, efficient and sustainable supply of the services to the local communities, from the groups and the water's committees constituted during the WP, the FSP and the LVHP.

Overall description The project strengthens the groups constituted during the previous projects (WP, the FSP and the LVHP), with the purpose to reduce their weakness and to assure the continuity of the services offered to the more vulnerable sectors of the community, in effective, efficient and sustainable way. The project focuses on specific groups, considered able to influence the greatest part of the communities: Community Cereal Bank groups (CCBs), Processing and Marketing groups (PMCs) and Chicken selling Groups and water committees. Moreover, the project strengthens the institutional organizational abilities, the commercial knowledge and the managerial abilities besides favoring the creation of based nets on specific sectors. Direct beneficiaries: 650 people, belonging mainly to the following groups: Community Cereal Bank (CCBs), Processing and Marketing Cooperatives, Water Committees and Chicken Selling Centres.

Duration From 01/08/ 2006 to 15/07/ 2008 Overall Objectives The project aims at opening the access to the market for the rural population of Dodoma in the sesame sector, one of

the cultivable export products in this region. Particularly, the action had focused on the improvement of the life conditions of the population increasing the income of the farmers, through the formation of 23 informal associations of producers (Local Interest Groups, LIGs) at village level, 5 groups for Production and Marketing (PMGs) whom managed some collection points for the sesame, implement quality control procedures and sell a quality product. Moreover the project had supported the establishment of 3 Seed Producers Groups (SPG) of farmers dealing with local production and multiplication of seeds (with emphasis on oilseeds). Direct beneficiaries: 1.150 farmers and their respective families for a total of 5.750 people, relatively to the formation of the producers’ groups.

Overall Objectives General objective was to assuage the poverty of the rural populations, promoting small-scale entrepreneurial activity (both of agricultural type and other types) and favouring the marketing of the obtained products on regional and national levels. Specific objectives were: i) engage Small-scale rural producers in commercial enterprises being farm, off farm or non-farm, that they produce commodities or services for the market; ii) develop Business Services that make possible for the small rural producers to utilize the available production potentials targeting and reaching the market opportunities for the commodities they produce. Direct beneficiaries: 3.000 small rural producers.

Overall Objectives The aim of this project was to enable the communities to establish and manage permanent and reliable water supplying systems in a sustainable manner in order to improve the health and hygiene of its members as well as to contribute to the use of the time released (from fetching water) particularly by women and children in a productive and socially useful way. Overall Objectives The project contributed to improve the living conditions for Tanzanian rural population by enabling the farmers to play an efficient role in rural development through SACCOS and financial facilities, thanks to the support, the collaboration and the strengthening of MVIWATA, the national network of farmers’ organisations. Direct beneficiaries: 6.000 bank clients, consumers and workers connected to the commercial sector; 3.000 producers, member of local organizations.

Overall Objectives The overall goal of the programme was to improve the food security situation in Dodoma and Morogoro regions through strategies for the improvement of the agricultural production, nutritional planning, and community based crop savings, and the establishment of Community Cereal Banks. The programme contributed largely to the improvement of food security situation in the area as evidenced by reduced labour selling for food in growing seasons, increased agricultural productivity, reduced pest crop damage and income gains through sale of grains at peak price periods, ox-plough and carts hire-out and to a less extent income-generating activities. We can sum-up the contributions that FSP has made with focus on the following aspects: i) Human capital formation through training on improved agricultural techniques (use of FYM, improved and/or appropriate seeds, tillage), use of industrial and indigenous storage pesticides, vegetable preservation and a number of organisational aspects (leadership skills, gender awareness, financial management and record keeping); ii) Social capital formation through deliberate efforts taken to facilitate farmer groups establishment and strengthening of the pre-existed ones; iii) Establishing institutional arrangement through enhanced linkages between the beneficiaries and other actors like: government, partner agencies (LVIA, WOPATA, INADES and AFREDA), farmers of other places, which is essential for strengthened support and exchange of knowledge, skills and experience pertaining aspects crucial for sustaining food security; iv) Establishment of physical and financial capital through CCBs construction, agricultural implement loan provision and financial support for CCBs initial capital. In particular LVIA formed and is still following 6 CCBs in Dodoma Rural District and 1 in Kongwa District.
