VILLAGE HALL NEWS
Summary of Open Meeting on Friday 16th March
Held in the Village Hall
ONLY nine people attended the meeting which was held to discuss what the village would
like to see happening at the Village Hall in the future.
Despite the poor attendance - approximately 1% of the village - the meeting was very
interesting and produced a number of suggestions and ideas for the new Committee to work
on after their formation at the AGM to be held on Friday 20th April.
Some of the suggestions were:-
Hold Discussion Groups
Form an Art Group
Hold regular Bananagram - Scrabble - and Wine/Cheese meetings
Hold an ‘Introduction to Counseling’ meeting
Start Bridge lessons and a Bridge School
Encourage Youth Interest by asking for younger members to join the Committee
Form a Youth Committee to design own magazine
Design a Youth Page on our website
Design Project - make a video of Lawshall to show at the Village Hall
Form a ‘Photographic Club’ and hold monthly meetings
Hold monthly Coffee Mornings
Hold Exhibitions
Continue to put on ‘Plays’ by travelling theatre groups
All of these suggestions will be put to the new Committee. If you like the idea of any or all
of the above, why not come along to the AGM and tell the meeting of your interests, or
better still, put your name forward as a Committee member? It is only a one year
commitment and your input could strengthen the way forward for our Hall which is so well
equipped to host any number of activities.
We look forward to seeing you very soon.

Are you planning a party this year?
WITH all the things that are happening during 2012, are you thinking of having a party?
Would your work colleagues like to meet in a comfortable location with easy parking?
Are you wanting a kids party? Looking for a place for your wedding reception?
Our Village Hall comfortably seats over 100 people. It offers everything required and
boasts facilities that are equal to, or better than any Hall in this area. There is a large car
park with easy access, together with full facilities in the Hall. These include wide entry
doors and ramps plus toilet facilities for the disabled. A full sound system coupled with
Hearing Loop for those who need this. There is also a stage and a projector with screen, so
that you can show any presentation direct from your lap top. Advance arrangements must
be made to use this equipment.
To put the icing on the cake, we now offer a full marquee service plus three different styles
of catering to meet your specific requirements. A fourth option, of course, is for you to use
our extensive and well equipped kitchen.
Marquees are supplied by Peartree Meadow Marquees. The company offers different
specifications according to your needs. They erect the marquee and fit it out to your
instructions. This can include attaching it to the Village Hall so that cover is available from
the door directly into the marquee. The nice thing about having a marquee, is that full use
can be made of both the Hall and the extensive grass area, whatever the weather.
Catering depends on your needs, but if you require a fully cooked and prepared meal, there
is a company called Grape Vine Catering who will take care of everything. If you would
rather have Buffet catering with a very varied menu, the company to contact is Dolly
Mixtures. If you want Fish & Chips, Burgers or Pizzas etc for a kids party, this can be
arranged with Deep Blue Restaurants. All of these take away your worries.

~ Letters to the Editor ~
DO you have something concerning the village that you would like to publish
in this magazine? If so, please contact the Editor (details are inside the front
cover). You must include your name and telephone number ~ it won’t be
printed in the magazine if you don’t want it to, but I will not publish anything
that doesn’t have the sender’s name.
We reserve the right to include or refuse any item.
“Dear Editor,
At approximately 11.30am on 13th March I received a phone call from a man saying he
wanted to speak to me about the Direct Debit that I paid to E.D.F or E’ON (I have used
both companies). He said that because I was a regular payer and was never in debt, I was
to receive a £40 refund as a thank you.
Needless to say I was delighted. The man knew my name and address and I was taken in!
He already knew which bank I used and then asked me for my credit card number, so he
could make the refund. Stupidly, I began to give it to him, but after saying the first 4 digits,
‘the penny dropped’. I refused to continue and ended the phone call.
I immediately contacted EDF who knew nothing about this ‘con’ and referred it to their
Fraud Department. I then rang my credit card company and spoke to their Fraud Dept.
I was told I was safe as I had only given out the first 4 of the 16 digit number. I then tried
to pay my credit card bill with another debit card and was told this had been refused!
I telephoned that company and spoke to their Fraud Dept. After being asked countless
questions from both card companies, I was finally allowed to use my cards again (bring
back cash!!)
I am thankful that the Fraud Departments took the time to ask so many personal questions,
to verify who I was, but the whole episode left me exhausted.
‘There’s no fool like an old fool’.
Mrs S Walker”
Thank goodness this tale had a happy ending. These sort of scams are happening all the
time and the villains who perpetrate them are getting cleverer all the while. It all sounds so
plausible - especially when they already have some of your personal information and you
are told you’re entitled to a refund!
But the service providers of our electricity, gas, water, telephone, Internet etc., will NEVER
ask for your bank or credit card details over the phone. So if you get one of these calls (and
I get Internet scammers on the phone almost weekly) just put the telephone down without
even saying goodbye to the caller. They come from abroad so our British call-barring
system doesn’t block them.
Thank you Mrs Walker for sharing your awful ordeal with us, hopefully it will help to
save others from getting caught ~ and well done on acting so quickly.

Round & About Lawshall Readers’ Offer
‘‘Thames Diamond Jubilee PageantThames Diamond Jubilee Pageant’’
Sunday 3Sunday 3rdrd June 2012June 2012
IT’S going to be the biggest royal event on London’s river in decades, possibly centuries: on
Sunday 3rd June more than 1000 vessels will leave Battersea for the ‘Thames Diamond Jubilee
Pageant’, a stately progress downriver to Tower Bridge.
Ten groups of boats - including the specially-built Gloriana barge, the ‘Little Ships’ of
Dunkirk and the replica Golden Hinde - will be led by music herald barges. The Queen and
Duke of Edinburgh, on the royal barge, The Spirit of Chartwell, will be in the third group.
All bridges will close to the public, so spectators will need to decide whether to watch from
the north bank or the south, just as they did in medieval times. Nowadays, the modern river is
lined with open spaces, cafes, bars and restaurants. The excellent Thames Path runs along
both banks. Half the route can be seen from Victoria and Albert embankments. Both of these
have huge pavements and low walls to lean on. The start time - so far described as ‘High
Water’ - will almost certainly be around 2pm from Battersea Bridge.
It will be a fantastic and historic day, but car travel and parking will be a nightmare. ‘Round
& About Lawshall Magazine’ has booked a coach to take villagers to the event. We will
need to leave early in order to get good vantage points.
Coach fare will be £18 per person and will leave the Village Hall car park on
Sunday 3rd June at 8.00am returning by approximately 9.30pm
Cut here…………………………..............................................................................
To book your seat (s) please fill in the slip below and send cheque made payable
to ‘Lawshall Village Hall’ or cash to: Malcolm Edgar, Sideways, Bury Road,
Lawshall. Suffolk IP29 4PL
Applications must be received by Monday 16th April at the latest.
A receipt will be sent to you as confirmation of your booking. In the event of the
coach being over subscribed, your coach fare will be returned to you.

THIS month the children have started to spend time in the school garden in preparation for
the better weather and our plant sharing initiative with local schools.
We have enjoyed a whole school Peter Pan Enrichment Day to raise money for Great
Ormond Street Hospital which is our focus charity for the year. The children came to school
dressed as characters from the story and participated in a carousel of activities including
singing sea shanties, baking, drama and pirate themed art activities. At the end of the day the
children sold their Tinkerbell Fairy Cakes to raise further funds for the hospital.
Our Easter celebration always features songs from musicals and this year the children have
been learning Chitty Chitty Bang Bang songs. We are very much a singing school and the
children will enjoy entertaining their families at our end of term event with their fantastic
singing.
Children in Year Three have visited Golden Wood as part of the Seed to Tree Programme.
They enjoyed looking at artefacts from Papua New Guinea and as part of this ‘step’ they have
also written letters to the children at the school in Wagu Village which has now reopened.
We shall look forward to hearing from the Wagu children.
Our Year Four children are also preparing for their visit to Kingswood Outdoor Activity
Centre in Norfolk. Our thanks must go to the Lawshall Trust and The Hallifax trust for
supporting this visit with their kind donations.

you can use it to pay for goods and services in shops, restaurants and hotels, just like
your debit card at home !! BUT FREE OF CHARGE!

IF your card is lost or stolen don’t worry our dedicated UK based team is on hand 24

TAG ‘n’ TRAQ
At Thomas Cook you can protect your luggage and
your identity with Tag and Traq ~ so what is this?
For ONLY £6.95 you get five tags for your holiday
luggage which is more than just a luggage tag. Just
attach the luggage tags to your bags prior to any travel
and store your wallet ID card safely in a wallet or purse. In the event of
you losing or misplacing your luggage no matter what time zone or
destination, the team are there to assist you. The tags provide you with
12 months’ lost luggage recovery assistance and identity protection. Each has a unique
tracking number which eliminates the need for you to display your name and address on
your tags.
How does it work? If you luggage is lost or delayed the company will liaise with
baggage handling agents, airlines, airport security, rail, police and many others to
quickly identify the owner of the lost luggage. When your lost luggage is found they will
contact you to arrange delivery at a time and place convenient to you ( this may incur an
additional cost ).
You can purchase these at any time and we just activate them for the date of your next
trip. A great gift idea.
So for both of these great products come and see us now at Thomas Cook, Bury St
Edmunds ( near Starbucks ) or call us on 0844 335 7133.

Match funding for Suffolk Charities and Community Group
THE race is on to give away £375,000 in match funding to local charities and community
groups across the UK. From 1st March, any donation made through Localgiving.com, the
national website dedicated to supporting small, ultra-local charities, will receive matched
funds from a pot worth £375,000 from the Government’s Office for Civil Society.
The Localgiving.com March Match Fund starts at 9 am on 1st March and will continue
until all funding is allocated.
By making a donation to a favourite local charity via Localgiving.com during this match
challenge, donors can double their gift. Gift Aid adds another 25% if the donor is a UK
taxpayer.
Localgiving.com in Suffolk has only just gone live but already a number of local charities
have registered and are therefore eligible for the match funding. Charities and groups that
are not yet registered are able to register and become part of the initiative. If any groups
are interested in joining Localgiving.com, local voluntary groups are encouraged to email
[email protected] for more information.
Localgiving.com is the only website in the country that enables community organisations
too small to register with the Charity Commission to benefit from online fundraising and
GiftAid. With nearly 1,000 validated charities already registered online, Localgiving.com
provides much needed (and appreciated!) support to small, grassroots aid organisations
across the country.

ANOTHER exciting month at Preschool. We are enjoying our lovely garden,
especially on those warmer afternoons. The children have been bug hunting
and were very excited to discover ladybirds and have been recreating their
experience with chalks on the playground, painting, junk modelling and will
explore further with stories and rhymes.
We have celebrated Mothers Day by making cards for our lovely mummies
which the children decorated like a photo frame with a photo of them too.
During March we will have been participating in Sports Relief. We will have
two events, the first will be a ‘Toddle round the Big School Playground’ on the
20th and the second event will be a Fancy Dress Session on the 23rd – we
look forward to seeing how adventurous the fancy dress is.
After Easter we will start to welcome the first of our Furry Friend visitors,
where the children will experience various pets and learn how to care for and
approach animals safely.
We will be ending term with our traditional Easter Egg hunt, with tea and cake
for parents, grandparents and carers.
We wish you all a very sun filled, happy and healthy Easter.

I HAVE been a little more self-indulgent with my time recently - I have had
two half-day birding trips (I have also planned a weekend in Norfolk before
the end of March - more on that next time).
The first outing was due mainly to the burst of spring-like weather at the
beginning of the month; we decided to visit Lynford Arboretum near
Thetford in our annual quest for a hawfinch.
It is easier to find these very elusive
finches when there are no leaves on the
trees, and on the day we were fortunate
enough to get good views of four of them,
which we thought was a good number for
such scarce birds until we spoke to
another birder (with a huge camera) who
had seen and photographed no fewer than
seventeen!
That is really good news as hawfinches have been seriously declining in
recent years. To make a good day into a memorable one, a large party of
crossbills flew noisily overhead and landed in the trees right next to us so
we could see the bright red males alongside their paler green mates.
The second outing, however, was not quite so successful; it was very misty
here as we left for Lackford lakes. With my usual optimism (ha-ha) I
thought it would soon brighten up, but of course it just got foggier and
foggier, so much so that we could actually see very little out on the water.
We did not even try to locate the female red crested pochard that was
supposed to be there because they are hard enough to differentiate from
ordinary pochard females when the conditions are good. Instead, we sat in
one of the hides overlooking a boggy area to try to warm up a little. The
reward for sitting still for a while was to be able to count nine snipe, some
feeding and some sleeping, whereas on our arrival we thought there was
nothing to see apart from a couple of teal and a shoveler.
By the time you read this, there should be some of our spring migrants
around, chiffchaffs, blackcaps, and possibly willow warbler.

This Month In The Garden by ‘GreenFingers’
AS we say farewell to the winter and welcome the spring suddenly everyone gets
enthusiastic and wants to get started in the garden. However, despite a little warm sunshine
the ground is still very cold (and dry) and this can make weeding difficult. Also, be wary in
the flower beds as a lot of the perennials have yet to produce shoots and therefore are
susceptible to being spiked by an over-enthusiastic fork! Don’t be too hasty to discard any
plants that look as though they have been victims of the frost - wait a little longer as they
may still recover and begin to shoot.
If the winter has produced an abundance of moss in your lawn this needs to be removed as
soon as possible to allow the grass to breathe and grow. An electric lawn-raker will soon
remove the moss and thatch (dead grass from cutting) and can be done if the ground is
reasonably dry. Heavily infested areas may need to be done in stages to avoid large bare
areas being produced. Later in the month apply a good lawn fertilizer.
Remember that most of the granular fertilizers need rain within a couple of days after
application so tune in to the weather forecast first other wise you made need to manually
water (see details of hosepipe ban on page 11).
In the vegetable plot, second early potatoes should be set with the main crop staggered
approximately two weeks later. Leave sowing beetroot till later in the month as, if these are
sown too early they are more prone to bolting (going to seed), although most modern
varieties like ‘Boltardy’ have been bred to prevent this. Once carrots, parsnips and beetroot
have germinated, thin them out or else weak and small roots will develop. Carrots should
not be thinned in hot, dry weather as this will increase the chances of being attacked by the
carrot fly - remember those little blighters can smell a crushed carrot seedling from several
miles away! Brussels Sprouts need sowing early and should be planted, once large enough,
by the end of the month. By choosing a few plants from three different varieties, you can
have sprouts from December through to March. Remember to give plenty of space between
the plants. Sow tomatoes in pots in the greenhouse for either indoor or outdoor planting. If
possible, avoid planting tomatoes in grow-bags as these become difficult to water especially
once they dry out. Irregular watering is one of the reasons why the fruits split later on.
Dahlia tubers should be brought out of store and prepared for the new season. If your soil is
heavy clay, then the best way is to plant the tubers in pots in the greenhouse where they will
soon be ready for planting out later when the risk of late frosts have passed. This method
also helps to restrict the damage from snails and slugs who tend to decimate the new
growth. Bedding plant seedlings should be big enough to transplant into trays for growing
on. Begonia tubers need planting early on to maximise growing time
- but not planted out until after frosts have passed.
If you took heed of our encouragement a couple of years ago to
install your own drip-fed watering system you will be happy to know
these are still permitted during the hosepipe ban. (see details at the
bottom of page 11). …..….more next month

THE HISTORY OF APRONS
WE don’t wear aprons like granny used to … The principal use of Grandma's apron was to
protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to
wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material.
But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was
wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty
ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and
sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy children. And when the
weather was cold Grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a
perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Sticks and kindling wood were brought into
the kitchen in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried
out the hulls. In the autumn, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the
trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture
that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked
out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the
fields to dinner.
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace
that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.
The Health & Safety people would go crazy now knowing just how many
germs were on that apron! BUT, I don't think we ever caught anything from
an apron - but love....

TALKING DOG FOR SALE
A MAN sees a sign outside a house - 'Talking Dog For Sale.' So he rings the bell, the
owner appears and tells him the dog can be viewed in the back garden. The man sees a
very nice looking Labrador Retriever sitting there.
"Do you really talk?" he asks the dog.
“Yes," the Labrador replies.
After recovering from the shock of hearing the dog talk, he asks,
"So, tell me your story."
The Labrador looks up and says,
"Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the
government, so I told the SAS. In no time they had me jetting from country to country,
sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one imagined that a dog would
be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years. But the jetting
around the world really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided
to settle down. I signed up for a job at Heathrow to do some undercover security work,
wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible
shady dealings and was awarded several medals. I got married, had a few puppies, and
now I've just retired."
The man is amazed. He goes back into the house and asks the owner how much he wants
for the dog.
"Ten quid," the owner says.
"£10! But this dog is absolutely amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheaply?"
"Because he's lying. He's never been out of the garden."

Lawshall Lions U13 Boys Football Team
SINCE the middle of February Lawshall Lions U13s have played three league games
winning twice and drawing once. Our last game of February was a top of the table encounter
against Brantham Athletic. After a very close match the score ended 1-1, Lawshall’s goal
scored by Leo Mourao.
With our cup semi final postponed due to Woodbridge unable to field a side, we hosted
Kirton Kestrels on the 10th March. They provided stern opposition and led the game 1-0 until
midway through the second half. Lawshall’s dominance finally came to fruition with a goal
from Tom Bastow. Soon after, Cameron Nichols made it 2-1 with his 24th goal of the season.
With Brantham losing to Chantry Grasshoppers Lawshall moved to the top of the league.
Our final away game of the season was played at a wet Whitton United. On a big sloping pitch
Lawshall should have gone in at half time leading by at least five goals, instead the lead was
1-0 Tom Bastow poaching one in from a corner! After the interval Whitton came out like they
had been given the Sir Alex hairdryer treatment! With a bit more composure in front of goal
they could have taken the lead. With some great drive and determination particularly from
Jamie Proctor and Jamie Daniel a second goal was fired in during a goal mouth scramble.
Shortly after his goal, again Jamie Daniel drove forward only to be scythed down in the box.
Kyle Smith made no mistake of the resulting penalty, firing Lawshall to a 3-1 win.
With two league games remaining and a Cup Semi Final on the 24th March
it’s going to be an exciting end to the season.

‘From the Archives’
THIS month I have bought some memorabilia on eBay and have had a 1890s photo sent by email. The different ways one can source information these days is a sure sign of changing times! The photo comes from Adam Warren, in Southampton and it shows one of his ancestors, William Isaac Warren, in the middle of the group. This photo was taken at Shrub Farm, on the Cockfield side of the village. The other document needs some research and maybe some of the older residents will be able to give me information about Captain Collins; the only thing I know is that he was at Dales Egg Farm, Melford Road, in the 1920s.
