aggressive climate-change
policies, report says
California will fall short of its goal to
slash greenhouse gas emissions by
midcentury unless it adopts aggressive
policies to fight climate change, a new
report says.
The state is still on track to cut emissions
of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping
gases to 1990 levels by 2020, according to
a report released Monday by the U.S.
Department of Energy's Lawrence
Berkeley National Laboratory.

Implicit bias is very real, even in the scientific community
• Faculty participants:
• rated the male applicant as
significantly more competent and
hirable than the (identical) female
applicant.
• selected a higher starting salary
($4k/year average)
• offered more career mentoring to the
male applicant.
• Female and male faculty were equally likely
to exhibit bias against the female student.
• Analyses indicated that the female student
was less likely to be hired because she was
viewed as less competent.
In a randomized double-blind study, science faculty from research-intensive universities rated
the application materials of a student—who was randomly assigned either a male or female
name—for a laboratory manager position. Test yourself!
