Tis is CzanneJorella Andrews, illustrated by Patrick Vale

Paul Czanne challenged convention, and pioneerednew possibilities in painting. He was remarkable orhis ability to perceive and paint aspects o everydaylie in ways that revealed dynamic yet deeplyharmonious visions o the world.

But the intellectual and emotional difficultieso his achievements were considerable. Mainly sel-

taught, most o his career was plagued by rejection.Te critics, and the public, disliked his paintings, and in 1884 Czanne declared that Paris, the centero the nineteenth-century art world, had deeatedhim. Repeatedly, he retreated into sel-doubt andbad temper.

Tis book ollows Czanne on his extraordinaryartistic journey, ocusing on his ormativediscoveries, made not in the flashy, ashionablemetropolis o Paris but in provincial and ruralFrance, ofen in isolation.

Jorella Andrews is a senior lecturer in the Visual Cultures

department at Goldsmiths, University o London, and the author

    o Showing Off! A Philosophy of Image(2014).

mad, and he did suffer throughout his lie periods omental anguish. But Van Goghs paintings are notthe works o a madman. Van Gogh amously soldonly one painting during his lie, but within a ewyears o his death he was recognized as one o thegreatest modern painters.
