Welcome, and Happy New Year!We know that one of the favorite features

of our program books is always the list of our past speakers. Especially when you bring guests to The Richmond Forum, it’s fun to take a trip down memory lane and discuss your favorite (and yes, least favorite) programs over the years. Tonight, in honor of our 25th season, we expanded this listing with the addition of photos scoured from our archives, all the way back to our opening night.

But, is this really The Richmond Forum’s 25th season? Or is it our 41st?

Long-time Forum attendees will recognize that the answer is all in how you look at it, while newer subscribers may be interested to learn that the DNA of this series actually goes back to 1964.

In January of that year, The Richmond Public Forum was founded by members of the Unitarian Church in Richmond. Nationally and internationally known speakers who came to enlighten, educate and entertain Forum audiences at the Mosque theater included: Barry Goldwater, Wernher Von Braun, Masters and Johnson (topic: “Sex Fact and Fallacy”), Moshe Dayan, and two future presidents: Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan. In 1980, after 16 years in operation, The Richmond Public Forum dimmed its lights and closed its doors.

In 1986, Ralph Krueger, who was heavily involved with the original Richmond Public Forum, founded The Richmond Forum and incorporated the new entity as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization. Krueger believed strongly that Forum programs should instill civic pride, relate to contemporary life and challenge citizens to discuss and explore the political, cultural and economic trends and

issues that affect our communities today. On January 24, 1987, The Richmond Forum presented its f irst program “The News and Newsmakers,” with ABC News journalist Ted Koppel. Presenting nationally and internationally known speakers became the hallmark of the new organization, just as it had been with its predecessor.

Legally, the two organizations are unique and distinct entities, but there’s no denying the relationship, with Ralph Krueger as the linchpin. Without his initial vision, leadership and passion, and without your continuing support, we would not be here tonight. It is an honor for me, our staff, and our Board of Directors to continue this wonderful Richmond tradition today, and we look forward to many great seasons ahead.

Even after all of these years (whether you choose to call it 25 or 41), The Richmond Forum continues to break new ground: in November with our first-ever sitting head of state, and tonight with our first former First Lady, Laura Bush.

The role and duties of the American First Lady are officially undefined, leaving each First Lady since Martha Washington to create her own role, often including hostess, campaigner, public face and more recently, policy advocate. Upon the inauguration of George W. Bush as the 43rd President of the United States, First Lady Laura Bush quickly set about defining her own role by becoming involved in issues of national and global concern, with a particular emphasis on education, health care and human rights.

A former teacher and librarian, Mrs. Bush convened a Summit on Early Childhood Cognitive Development in 2001, providing a forum for prominent scholars and educators to share research on the best ways for parents and caregivers to prepare children for lifelong learning. She is an enthusiastic proponent of teacher recruitment programs such as Teach for America, The New Teacher Project and Troops to Teachers.

Also in 2001, Mrs. Bush joined the Library of Congress to launch the first National Book Festival. The Festival has since grown each year, drawing more than 150,000 book-lovers from across the nation to Washington, D.C. in 2010.

Mrs. Bush’s involvement in Afghanistan began in 2001, when she delivered the weekly presidential radio address to call attention to the plight of women and children suffering under the Taliban. In 2005 she made an historic visit to that nation and witnessed firsthand the progress achieved by the Afghan people after the fall of the Taliban regime. She met with President Hamid Karzai and expressed America’s continued support for Afghanistan’s new democracy, which ensures equal rights for women and men.

In 2006 Mrs. Bush hosted leaders from around the world for the White House Conference on Advancing Global Literacy, showcasing successful literacy programs from a diversity of countries. Today she serves as Honorary Ambassador for the United Nations Literacy Decade.

As the leader of President Bush’s Helping America’s Youth initiative, Mrs. Bush drew attention to proven programs helping children avoid such risky behaviors as drug and alcohol use, early sexual activity and violence, and highlighting the need for a caring adult role model in every child’s life.

Laura Bush was born in Midland, Texas. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Southern Methodist University and a master’s degree in library science from the University of Texas. She taught in public schools in Dallas, Houston and Austin and worked as a public school librarian. In 1977, she met and married George Walker Bush. They are the parents of twin daughters, Barbara and Jenna. Their son-in-law, Henry Hager, grew up in Richmond.

Her memoir, Spoken From the Heart, is a New York Times #1 best seller.

Tonight’s moderator, Sandra Gioia Treadway, has served as the Librarian of Virginia since 2007. She has spent most of her professional career at the Library of Virginia, serving as director of publications from 1990 to 1995 and as deputy librarian from 1995 to 2007.

The Library of Virginia was founded in 1823 and serves as Virginia’s state library agency and state archives. It houses the most comprehensive collection of printed and manuscript materials documenting the history, culture and government of Virginia over the past 400 years. As the state librarian, Treadway also provides leadership to Virginia’s library community, working closely with the state’s 91

public library systems to ensure Virginians have the highest quality library and information services.

Treadway is a 1971 graduate of Manhattanville College and earned a doctoral degree in American History from the University of Virginia in 1978 and a master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Tennessee in 2007. She is a frequent speaker on library issues, as well as Virginia and women’s history topics.

She serves on several boards, commissions and advisory groups, including the Supreme Court of Virginia’s Historical Commission, the Virginia Freedom of Information Advisory Council and the Board of the Valentine Richmond History Center.

Now in its 15th season, the Richmond Boys Choir began as a collaborative project of Theatre IV and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond. In 1997, the Richmond Boys Choir became an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3).

The Richmond Boys Choir strives to showcase personal, academic and musical excellence, and represent Richmond’s diverse cultures through its music and membership.

In 2007, the Richmond Boys Choir was selected to receive the prestigious Coming Up

Taller Award from the President’s Committee on Arts and Humanities. The award ceremony took place in the East Room of the White House, with First Lady Laura Bush presiding.

The choir has appeared on NBC’s Today Show, performed at Virginia gubernatorial events and at four previous Richmond Forum programs.

The Richmond Boys Choir is under the direction of Billy Dye.

George Washington’s wife was the first to be given the title “lady” by the press, as in “Lady Washington,” and the first wife of a president to appear on a U.S. postage stamp.

Abigail Smith Adams, 1797-1801

John Adams’ wife urged him to “remember the ladies” when he and the other founding fathers set about crafting a new code of laws. She was the first woman to be both a president’s wife and the mother of a president and the first to live in the White House.

Martha Jefferson Randolph, 1801-1809

Thomas Jefferson’s wife, Martha, died 18 years before her husband was elected president. Their daughter, Martha Jefferson Randolph, served as White House hostess and was the first to give birth in the White House. Dolley Payne Madison, 1809-1817

James Madison’s wife is the only First Lady given an honorary seat on the floor of Congress; she was the first American to respond to a telegraph message—sent by inventor Samuel Morse.

America’s First Ladies:Their Firsts (and Other Trivia)

It has been called the “highest unofficial office in the land.” The title “First Lady” was first formally used in 1860, when Harriet Lane served in this role for her bachelor uncle, President James Buchanan. Before then, the wife of the president had been alternately referred to as “Lady,” “Mrs. President,” even “Mrs. Presidentress.” As we discovered in compiling this information, no two lists of America’s First Ladies is the same. Some lists, including the White House’s, list the President’s wife, even if she died years before he entered office. We have chosen to present here the list as maintained by the Smithsonian Institution in conjunction with its extremely popular First Ladies exhibit. Space prevents us from fully exploring the many accomplishments of each First Lady, so please enjoy this abridged list of First Lady “firsts” and other trivia.

John Quincy Adams’ wife was the only First Lady born in a foreign country: England. She played the harp, wrote plays and raised silkworms. Emily Donelson, 1829-1836

Andrew Jackson’s wife, Rachel, died after Jackson was elected president but before his inauguration. Her niece, Emily Donelson, and Jackson’s daughter-in-law, Sarah Jackson, shared the role of White House hostess.

John Tyler’s first wife was a stroke victim and the first president’s wife to die in the White House. In 1844, Tyler eloped with Julia Gardiner, who became the first First Lady to be photographed and the second to be buried at Hollywood Cemetery. Sarah Childress Polk, 1845-1849

James Polk’s wife worked as the president’s secretary without taking a salary, and she forbade dancing and card-playing in the White House. Betty Taylor Bliss, 1849-1850

Zachary Taylor’s wife, Margaret “Peggy” Taylor, lived in the White House but refused to serve as hostess, giving that role to their daughter, Betty. Abigail Powers Fillmore, 1850-1853

Millard Fillmore’s wife was the first presidential spouse to work and earn a salary before marriage. She died three weeks after leaving the White House. Jane Appleton Pierce, 1853-1857

Rutherford B. Hayes’ wife was the first to ban

James A. Garfield’s wife began efforts to conduct historical research on the White House rooms and served as her husband’s primary caretaker for two months after an assassin shot him. Mary Arthur McElroy, 1881-1885

Chester A. Arthur’s wife, Ellen, died from pneumonia 20 months before her husband took office. Arthur’s sister, Mary Arthur McElroy, served as White House hostess.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, the first-ever sitting head of state to address The Richmond Forum, was the opening night speaker of The Richmond Forum’s 25th Anniversary Season.
