Distressed LeatherProducts upholstered in distressed leather are distinctively designed to give themuch sought-after effect of a well loved family heirloom.• Distressed upholstered furniture is made from high-grade, full-grain leather specially

treated to give an aged look. • All natural marks and scars if present in the hide are left fully exposed, and there will be

significant variances in texture and shading individual to each piece. These aretestament to the genuine origin of the product, that form part of the design of the pieceand do not affect durability.

• After the furniture is upholstered theleather is further treated with six stagesof hand staining and waxing toemphasise the aged look of an antiquedchair which ensures that no two piecesare exactly alike.

• Legs are polished hardwood, distressedand stained to appear aged, complementingthe appearance of the leather.

All Leather options below are full grain Italian bull hides with a soft handle that aredyed through and feature surface coating. Consistent appearance, with grainvariation, some characteristics and colour shading.

Character LeatherFor an authentic look, all of the natural blemishes, markings and unique colourshading are visible. Some have semi-distressed and waxed finishes for morevariance in character, texture and shade.

Leather Buying GuideGenuine leather is natural and warm with individual characteristics. Laura Ashley useshigh quality full and semi aniline leathers, of which some are tanned using water baseddyes or pigments and finished with natural substances such as beeswax. This allows thenatural markings, scars, shade variation and beautiful characteristics of authentic leatherto be enjoyed. Each leather piece is unique and will show some colour variation.

True beauty comes with maturityWith a little care, leather will improve with age. After a time all leathers will relax and mouldcomfortably from use especially those with fixed seats. Occasionally, the odd mark orscratch can occur and colours may mellow, which will simply enhance the uniqueappearance of your piece and add extra character. Leather is an investment for the futureto be enjoyed for many years to come.

Leather FeaturesSome of our leathers have extra character with distressed and wax finishes which createmore significant variations in texture and colour, with enhanced markings under the wax.

Pull up may be evident, where leather is stretched taut for perfect upholstery. This can cause it toappear lighter in colour, especially across tighter areas. It’s more obvious on wax finishes whichare also susceptible to scratching; and the crackle effect will vary for a truly individual look.

Scars are recognised as dark lines and marks in the leather which are a natural featureof all high quality leather and don’t affect durability. Some of our leathers have had thesurface texture removed and a finish applied, giving a more uniform appearance,although characteristics and scars may still be visible.

Several hides are used to cover a sofa so variation in colour and texture may occur betweenthe different parts of a piece and between pieces on the same order as each is a unique product.

Seat Cushions, Fillings and Seat CoversOur cushions contain high quality fillings carefully formulated to give the correct loft for eachrange. All cushion fillings will compress when used, just like a pillow. The appearance andperformance of your cushions can be preserved by regular maintenance as soon as yourfurniture is in use:-

Fibre• A soft and comfortable filling which requires frequent maintenance.• Turn and plump cushions firmly on the edges after each day’s use to restore air between the fibres. • At least weekly, beat vigorously on each of the four sides, the more often this is carried out, the better the filling will perform.

Foam with Fibre Wrap• This is a firmer and more supportive filling than fibre which softens with use. Due to small tolerences in polyurethane foam manufacturing process, hardness of foam may vary from cushion to cushion within the same product or order, the variance may reduce with

use over time.• Plump cushions firmly on the edges occasionally to restore air between the fibres and maintain the shape.

• Any initial odours will dissipate once the product is unwrapped and in use.

Feather (available on selected back cushions only)• This is a luxury cushion filling and will flatten with use. It is easily restored with the same maintenance as fibre cushions.

All Cushion Fillings• Fillings which are not maintained correctly from the beginning will flatten and become difficult to restore, losing comfort and shape.• Swap reversible cushions around and turn where possible to ensure equal wear. Remove non-reversible cushions from the cover and turn over regularly.

• Leather and selected upholstery ranges have cushion covers which are not fully reversible. • Position and dress seat cushions carefully to ensure back cushions sit correctly.• The feel of the seat will vary dependent on the fabric and size chosen. Fabric compositions differ from fabric to fabric which can give a more relaxed or firmer feel to the seat when in use. Larger versions of a range have more cushion surface area for

air to escape and will feel different to smaller models, consider this in your selection.

We strongly recommend you try out the various fillings in store wherever possible.

Fabric, Leather and Suede UpholsteryCare• Regularly remove everyday dust and dirt, by gently vacuuming fabric with an upholstery brush, or dusting leather with a soft cloth.• Avoid contact with chemicals, eg. hair products, suncream and body lotions.• Remove all spills immediately by blotting with a clean dry white cloth, don’t rub or use abrasive cleaners. Should a spill result in a stain, please seek professional advice.• All fabrics, leather and suede can be affected by heat and light, position away from direct sunlight and at least 30cm from heat sources to protect from fading and premature wear. • Avoid exposure to excessively high or low temperatures or damp conditions. • Lift furniture, don’t drag, to avoid damage to legs and joints, and gently tighten legs from time to time.• Stand on a level surface to avoid rocking and damage to the legs or frame.

Leather • Use our Leather Care Collection to help treat everyday soiling, scratches and marks. Contents include: 250ml leather cleaner, 250ml leather protector, cloth, sponge and a guide to application and use. 3335 641

Fabric• Clean fabric upholstery at least every 12-18 months, follow the specific instructions in the catalogue for each fabric carefully. Additional information for general care is provided in a care leaflet supplied with the product.• Fabric by the metre and loose covers are suitable either P Dry Clean Only or

P Sensitive Dry Clean Only. • Fixed covers should be professionally cleaned in situ by a specialist upholstery cleaner.• Many of our fabrics have a protective treatment applied during manufacture to help repel spills (excludes fabrics marked 6), however, periodic cleaning of the entire piece is still essential to maintain appearance and protect from fading and premature wear.• Clean co-ordinated items at the same time and always allow for 3% shrinkage upon the first clean.

We recommend using a reputable upholstery care professional and requesting a colour fastness test is performed and is satisfactory, on an inconspicuous area before cleaning commences.

Fabric FeaturesFabrics have natural characteristics which should be carefully considered. To select theright fabric for you please refer to the fabric glossary (right).• Delicate fabrics such as velvets and chenilles have a raised pile and exhibit shading

variations, crushing, lines and bruising, which create unique features. To avoidflattening the pile, protective coatings cannot be applied and care with liquids shouldbe taken.

• Fabrics with a linen and/or cotton content can pill and have fine threads visible. Some may display slub characteristic effects and may include occasional seeds and husks.

• Linen has a natural tendency to crease which enhances its textural appearance,creases will soften as the fabric relaxes in use. Pilling can occasionally occur in earlystages of use, which is a feature of such fabrics

• Fabrics selected for upholstered products may adopt a slightly different texture and appearance from those purchased by the metre due to fire resistant processing. They are natural or normal characteristics which do not affect product quality. The occasional odour from this will dissipate once the product is in use for a

period of time.

DurabilityConsider how much use your product will receive and select a fabric suitable for your needs.All our fabrics are suitable for general domestic upholstery. Take extra care with sharpobjects, such as studs and belt buckles as these can snag even the toughest of fabrics.

Using Your Own Upholsterer• Fabric suitability should be checked carefully for defects before cutting and upholstering

as we are unable to take responsibility for third party costs once upholstered.

• Most fabrics have a maximum length of 15m so for lengths greater than this checkcolour compatibility carefully.

• For upholstering, all fabrics require a fire retardant barrier interliner, compliant withschedule 3 of the safety regulations; use a reputable upholsterer who should advise.
