Launch of 2020 Nightingale Challenge & Workshop i

Nursing Now is a 3-year globalcampaign launched in 2018 toimprove health by raising the statusand profile of Nursing and Midwifery.This is because Nurses and Midwivesplay a crucial role in healthpromotion, disease prevention andtreatment.

The campaign will run until the end of2020, the 200th anniversary ofFlorence Nightingale’s birth and ayear when Nurses and Midwives willbe celebrated worldwide.

The campaign focuses on five coreareas:

Ensuring that nurses andmidwives have a more prominentvoice in health policy-making;

Encouraging greater investmentin the nursing workforce;

Advocating for more nurses inleadership positions;

Encouraging research that helpsdetermine where nurses can havethe greatest impact, and

Sharing examples of best nursingpractice.

The Nightingale ChallengeThe Nightingale Challenge is one ofthe programmes of the Nursing Nowcampaign. The programme waslaunched in June 2019.To celebrate2020 as the Year of the Nurse and theMidwife, the Nightingale Challengeaims to equip and empower the nextgeneration of nurses and midwives asleaders, practitioners and advocatesin health.

The Nightingale Challenge asks everyhealth employer around the world toprovide leadership and developmenttraining for a group of their youngnurses and midwives during 2020.

The Nursing and Midwifery Councilaccepted and signed on to theNightingale Challenge 2020. Byaccepting the Nightingale Challenge,we are demonstrating ourcommitment to investing andchampioning nursing and midwiferyat a time when the world is grapplingwith the Coronavirus pandemic andhow to contain it. This is why as aregulatory body we have partnered the:

In this Nightingale Challenge, therewill be a launch and workshop.There will also be expositions ontopics such as Leadership (NextGenerations), ImplementationResearch, Social Media Ethics andRepositioning Clinical Nursing andMidwifery among others.

Rev Veronica Mina Darko is the current Chairperson of the 14thGoverning Board of the Nursing & Midwifery Council.

Rev Darko doubles up as the Ghana Chapter Chairperson ofthe West African College of Nursing. She is the immediate pastRegistrar of the Council.

She holds a Diploma in Nursing Services Administration,certificate in Training of Trainers from the University of

Manchester, Institute of Development, Planning & Management, Post-graduate certificate in Gerontology and second degrees in Educational Administrationand Public Administration.

Under her leadership as the Registrar, the following were developed; Scheme of Servicefor Staff, 5 years Strategic Plan, website, Part III (Health Professions Regulatory BodiesAct) and Rules & Regulations Guiding the Licensing Examination.

Mr. Felix Nyante is a Fellow of the West African College of Nursingand a Foundation Fellow of the Ghana College of Nurses andMidwives. He is a State Registered Nurse, holds Second Degreesin Public Administration and Educational Administration. He iscurrently the Registrar of the N&MC. Felix has over thirty (30)years of continuous dedicated and productive service to theMinistry of Health, the Ghana Health Service and the N&MC.

He has been actively involved in the training of Professional Nursesand Midwives and has keen interest in support supervision of

Nurse/Midwife Practitioners. He is a Regional Council Member for Health ProfessionalsEducation in the ECOWAS Region.

In collaboration with relevant stakeholders, Felix championed the development andimplementation of online licensing examinations for nurses and midwives in Ghana.This happens to be the first of its kind in Africa.

Dr. Abigail Kyei (FWACN, FGCNM)President, Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives

Dr. Mrs. Abigail Agartha Kyei is the President of the Ghana Collegeof Nurses and Midwives. She holds a Master’s degree in PublicHealth (Maternal & Child Health Concentration) from the SanDiego State University, California, in the USA and a doctoraldegree from the University of Phoenix, in Arizona, USA.

In 2000, she set up the country office for Jhpiego in Ghana andbecame Jhpiego’s first Country Director in Ghana.

She later became the Jhpiego/Malawi Country Director anddoubled up as Chief of Party in the same organization. She joined the

International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) in 2008, as the International MidwifeAdvisor on a joint UNFPA/ICM programme.

Dr. Kyei is a Senior Lecturer and is currently the Head of Department for Nursing andMidwifery at Pentecost University College, Ghana.

Prof. Lydia Aziato is an Associate Professor and Dean of School ofNursing and Midwifery, University of Ghana. She holds a degreein Nursing and Psychology, MPhil in Nursing and PhD inNursing. She has also had a specialty training in OncologyNursing from the cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, Canada.

She holds both local and international positions in nursingorganizations such as Sigma Theta Tau International and she isthe President of the Chi-Omicron at Large Chapter. She also serves

on a number of boards and committees and she is an externalexaminer for a number of Universities.

She is a fellow of the Africa Science Leadership Programme, West African College ofNursing, foundation fellow of the Ghana College of Nursing and Midwives and a memberof the Ghana Young Academy.

Hannah Operabea Acquah (FWACN, FGCNM)Rector, Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives

Hannah Akua Oparebea Acquah (Ms) is the Rector of the GhanaCollege of Nurses and Midwives and Project Director on theGhana-SickKids Paediatric Nursing Education Partnership(PNEP). She is a PhD Candidate in Health Policy andManagement at the University of Ghana Business School.

She studied MPhil Nursing at the School of Nursing andMidwifery, College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana,Legon; Leadership at the Global Nursing Leadership Institute

(GNLI) at Geneva, Switzerland.

She is a Fellow of West African College of Nursing, Ghana College of Nurses and Midwivesand a Member of Sigma Theta Thau International, Lambda Chapter.

She is an ICN abstract reviewer and a Secretary to the Governing Council and AcademicBoard of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives.

Eva Mensah (FWACN, FGCNM)Director, Nursing and Midwifery Services, Ghana Health Service

Mrs Eva Mensah holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Nursing withPsychology, an Mphil in Nursing and a certificate in HealthAdministration and Management. She is a fellow of the GhanaCollege for Nurses and Midwives and the West African Collegeof Nursing.

She worked at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and is currentlythe Director for Nursing and Midwifery at the Ministry of Healthand Ghana Health.

She is a board member of the 37 Military Hospital NMTC and theNational Programme Coordinator for the USAID/GHS GOG Implementation

of Supportive Supervision and other quality innovations in the Health Service. A CoPI(Ghana Team), on the implementation of the Ghana Nurse Leadership Programme.

Mrs. Philomina A.N Woolley graduated with a Bachelor of Arts inNursing with Psychology and holds MPhil from the Universityof Ghana. She also holds a diploma in education at theUniversity of Cape-Coast and a Post graduate certificate inPublic Administration.

She is a Fellow of the West African College of Nursing and theGhana College of Nurses and Midwives and a member of Sigma

Theta Tau International.

She taught at the Midwifery Training School, Atibie in the Eastern Region.

She is currently the Deputy Registrar in charge of Operations at the Nursing andMidwifery Council. Until her appointment, Mrs. Philomina Woolley was the Head of theExamination Unit of the Council, a position she held from 2009 to 2016.

Victoria Lamina (FWACN, FGCNM)

Mrs. Victoria Lamina is currently the Head of Policy, Standards andGuidelines at the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

She holds a masters degree in Education Administration, BSc.Nursing and a Post Graduate Diploma Certificate in PeadiatricNursing from PXL University, Hasselt, Belgium. She hascertificates in Midwifery, State Registered Nursing and PublicAdministration.

She worked at Korle-bu Teaching Hospital and the Korle-buPolyclinic for 12 years. She played a key role in the structure and

development of Paediatric Nursing Licensure Examinatins for the Council.

She is a member of the West Africa College of Nursing; with Maternal and Child HealthFaculty and also a Foundation Fellow of Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives.

Mr. Osei Duodu Agyei (MBA, BSc) is a Senior IT Officer at theNursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana. Prior to Joining theCouncil, he was the Head of Department in an Engineeringcompany in Accra.

Osei had his Secondary Education at Pope John Senior Highand Minor Seminary. He currently Holds an MBA degree fromUniversity of Nicosia, Cyprus.

He has previously acquired an Advanced Information TechnologyManagement certificate from Galilee International Management Institute,

Israel where he was exposed to some of the world’s most sophisticated IT infrastructureand how to manage them.

As the Senior IT Officer of the Council, his roles include providing inputs into the trainingneeds of staff and where practical, run the training.

Mrs. Gloria Esenam Simpong is currently with the Nursing andMidwifery Council as the Head of the Monitoring and EvaluationDepartment, after being the Head of Indexing, Registration andLicensing Department for three (3) years.

She holds Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology andMaster of Business Administration (Health ServicesManagement) and Certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation

(GIMPA).

Gloria started her nursing as a State Registered Nurse (SRN). She became a Critical CareNurse in 1999, and worked in various hospitals.

She was the first Critical Care Nurse to be posted to the Obstetric recovery ward of theKorle Bu Teaching Hospital where she made great contributions to the development ofNursing and Midwifery protocols for the unit.

Benjamin Osei is the Assistant Head of the Monitoring andEvaluation Department, at the Nursing and Midwifery Council.He is also a member of the National Health Quality StrategyTechnical Committee of the Ministry of Health.

He holds a Certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation from theGIMPA and a Post Graduate Certificate in Result-Based ProjectManagement: Monitoring and Evaluation from the University of

Witwatersrand, Johannesburg South Africa.

Benjamin completed an MSc in Urban Management and Development from the ErasmusUniversity Rotterdam, Netherlands in 2015 and holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree inSociology from the University of Ghana, Legon (2006).

Nana Boateng AgyemanHead, Public Affairs, N&MC

Nana Boateng Agyeman is the Head of Public Affairs at the Nursingand Midwifery Council.

He holds a Diploma in Communications Studies with aspecialization in Population Communication, BA inCommunication Studies (Broadcast Journalism) and MA inAdult Education (Community Development).

He was awarded the best student in Population Communication(GIJ, 2004), Best Student in Marketing (GIJ, 2004), Best

Communication Studies Student (CSUC, 2011) and Best Graduatingstudent (Wisconsin International University College, 2019)

He is a member of the Institute of Public Relations, Ghana, Fellow of the CommonwealthProfessional Fellowship and Editorial Board Member of the Numid Horizon: InternationalJournal of Nursing and Midwifery

She is the immediate past Deputy Director of Nursing Servicesfor the Maternity Theatre of 37 Military Hospital.

She is a General Nurse, Midwife and a Peri-operative Nurse. She iscurrently the Regional Facilitator in Infection Prevention and Control.

She holds Executive Masters in Business Administration, a member of IHRMP and aFellow of GCNM.

Ms. Georgina Afua Sam is the Director of Nursing Services of theKomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

She holds Masters in Public Health, Post Graduate Diploma inEducation and Bachelor of Nursing with Psychology. She is aNurse-Midwife and has a rich experience in Public Health,Nursing administration and leadership.

She is a member of the West African College of Nursing and aFoundation Fellow of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives.

Until her current appointment, she was the Regional Officer of the Nursing and MidwiferyCouncil in the Brong Ahafo Region, a position she held since May, 2012.

Agnes Delali Agudu Deputy Director of Nursing, Accra Psychiatric Hospital

Agnes Delali Agudu is the Deputy Director of Nursing at the AccraPsychiatric Hospital.

She completed Nursing Training College, Pantang in 1998 andobtained a certificate in Mental Health Nursing.

She also holds Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master ofPhilosophy in Nursing and a certificate in Health Administrationand Management.

She has worked as a nursing practitioner at the Accra PsychiatricHospital since 1998 till date.

Ms. Evelyn-Eda Dangnikuu is the Director of Nursing at theTamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).

She became a State Registered Nursing in 1986. Ms. Evelyn-Eda Dangnikuu is also a Registered Midwife and Peri-OperativeNurse.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. In 2009 she wasappointed as a Deputy Director of Nursing Services (DDNS) at the

Tamale Regional Hospital to help establish the Neurosurgical Wardand Theatre and subsequently the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) in-charge of NursingAdministration in the Northern Region.

In December 2019, She was appointed as the Director of Nursing Services at TameleTeaching Hospital.

Evelyn-Eda DangnikuuDirector, Nursing Services, Tamale Teaching Hospital, Tamale

Colonel Josephine Osei-VowotorMatron, 37 Military Hospital, Accra

Colonel Josephine Osei-Vowotor is the Matron at the 37 MilitaryHospital.

She is a nurse-midwife and a public health nurse. She holdsBSC in Nursing at Central University. She also holds a PostGraduate Certificate in Health Service Administration andManagement from GIMPA.

She was enlisted into Ghana Military Army in 1990 and rosethrough to the ranks to become a Colonel and Matron of 37 Military

Hospital.

Col. Osei-Vowotor has worked at various Garrisons in Sunyani, Tamale, Takoradi. Shewas First Aid Instructor at Ghana Military Academy from 1996-1999. She Participatedin Peace-Keeping Operations in DR Congo in 2004 and in Cote Divoire in 2006.

Chief Supt. Juliana Dartey is the Director of Nursing Services atthe Police Hospital. She became a State Registered Nurse in1984, Midwife in 1986 and Pediatric Nurse in 1996. She holdsa Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.

Chief Supt. Dartey is a fellow of the West African College ofNursing and also a fellow of the Ghana College of Nurses andMidwives.

She was enlisted into the Ghana Police Hospital as the first PediatricNurse in the Police Hospital in 1998 on the rank of Inspector.

She has served on several committees, both in and outside the Police Hospital. Theseinclude Ministry of Health Technical Committee, Ghana Association of QuasiGovernment Health Institution (GAQHI), Ghana Police Hospital Infection PreventionCommittee, Chairperson Ghana Police Hospital Purchasing Committee.

Miss Linda Naa Okailey Mettle is the Deputy Director of NursingServices at the Regional Hospital, Upper West. She is a State-Registered Nurse and a Registered Midwife with 27 years workexperience in health service delivery.

She holds a degree in Psychology and Sociology, certificates inFamily Planning and Health Administration and Management.

She worked at the National Blood Transfusion Service, Korle Bu,Ussher Clinic and James Town Maternity Home, Mamprobi Polyclinic

and Sissala East Municipal Hospital, Tumu.

Ms. Martha Oppong-Gyargye is the Head of Nursing Administrationat the Regional Hospital, Bono.

She is a State Registered Nurse/Midwife and also ENTspecialist. She holds B.Sc. in Public Health and a certificate inHealth Administration and Management.

She has thirty-five years of continuous dedicated and productiveservice to Christian Health Services, MOH and GHS

Ms. Martha Oppong-Gyargye is a preceptor, clinician and manager.

Mary A. KalimDeputy Director, Nursing Services, Upper East Regional Hospital, Bolgatanga

Ms. Mary A. Kalim is the Deputy Director of Nursing Services at theRegional Hospital, Upper East. She is State-Registered Nurse andRegistered Ophthalmic Nurse.

She holds a certificate in Health Administration andManagement.

Ms. Mary A. Kalim has over 30 years of experience in nursingand has risen through the ranks to become the Deputy Director

of Nursing Services (DDNS).

Her hobbies are reading, organizing community members and giving educational talks.

Philomina Mireku (FGCNM)Deputy Director, Nursing Services, Eastern Regional Hospital, Koforidua

Mrs. Philomina Mireku is the Deputy Director of Nursing Servicesat the Eastern Regional Hospital, Koforidua. She is a Nurse andMidwife.

She holds BA (Hon) Psychology with Sociology and a certificatein Administration. She is a Fellow of Ghana College of Nursesand Midwives.

She has been a trainer, preceptor, clinical instructor and aReviewer of Pre-service learning guides for several years.

Mrs. Sophia Blankson is the Director of Nursing Services at theCape-Coast Teaching Hospital, Cape-Coast.

She is a Nurse and Midwife. Mrs. Sophia Blankson holdsAdvanced Diploma in Peri-Operative Nursing, BA. inManagement/Psychology, MSc. In Advanced Nursing Practice(Specialization in Midwifery) and a Certificate in HealthAdministration and Management.

With over 31 years of nursing and midwifery experience, Mrs.Amo–Yartey has worked at Axim Government Hospital,Bamianko Community Clinic, Kutukrom Community, Sefwi

Wiawso and Essiama Government Hospital.

Mrs. Amo –Yartey is a Patron of Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association,preceptor and HIV/AIDS Counselor.

Mrs. Innocentia Ruby Gborgblorvor is the Ag. Director of NursingServices at Ho Teaching Hospital. She is a Nurse-Midwife. Sheworked in the then Volta Regional Hospital (now Ho TeachingHospital) since 1999.

She holds a degree in Nursing and second degree in NursingEducation from the University of the Western Cape, SouthAfrica.

With several years of experience, Mrs. Gborgblorvor worked atWorawora Government Hospital, Ho Municipal Hospital and Peki Government Hospital.

Mrs. Rita Esi Aryee was appointed as the Director of Nursing andMidwifery Services in January, 2018.

She has over three decades experience in nursing andmidwifery, having been offered appointed to Korle Bu as a StaffNurse attached to the Central OPD in 1988. She has worked invarious departments such as the Polyclinic, Accidents Centre,Maternity and has risen to her current grade.

In 2012, she was appointed to the Deputy Director of NursingServices (DDNS) position in charge of the Training and Research Unit,

formally In-Service Training Unit. In 2016, she was appointed as the Chief NursingOfficer of the Unit.

She holds B.Sc. Degree in Nursing and a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counsellingfrom University of Ghana and University of Cape Coast respectively.

Mrs. Aisha Muniru Asante (MPhil, BSc) is self-motivated and versatile youngwoman with enviable knowledge and experience in the management of a

Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre (CSSC).

She has an excellent attitude to work and highly adaptable to changes. Withdemonstrated dynamism and flexibility, she is able to coordinate andconsolidate efforts internally and externally to drive results in meeting

institutional targets.

Aisha is also an American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS)Instructor with eight years’ experience.

Professor Aaron Lawson is a Professor of Anatomy and the Director of the MedicalTraining & Simulation Centre, UGMC, Legon. He holds an MB ChB degree from theUniversity of Ghana and a PhD in Anatomy from the University of Leicester,England.

He commenced his academic career as Lecturer in Anatomy in 1985 andbecame a Senior Lecturer in 1993, Associate Professor in 1999 and Professor

of Anatomy in 2000. He also served as Visiting Professor at Tulane MedicalSchool and the University of Utah, both in the US.

He has held various administrative positions at the University, including Head of Department, Dean of the MedicalSchool and Provost of the College of Health Sciences.

Following his retirement, he was appointed Coordinator of the University of Ghana Medical Centre Projectand between 2016 and 2018 he served as the Centre’s first Interim CEO.

He is also the current Chairman of the Board of Governors of All Nations University College in Koforidua

Dr. Nuamah is the Deputy Director of Medical Training Research and SimulationCentre, UGMC. She has 25 years experience in teaching, research, clinical andpreventive practice. She holds a PhD in Public Health, Masters Degree inPublic Health (Population and Reproductive Health), Bachelor of Arts inNursing with Psychology, Midwifery and State Registered Nursing Certificate.

She has worked in the area of community health, palliative care, e-health andhealth systems strengthening and also worked as a programme head for

management of HIV/AIDS programmes at Korle - Bu Teaching Hospital.

Dr. Nuamah serves as a senior research fellow at the International Earth Conservation (IEC) and a memberof the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) Ghana Chapters. Shehas eight (8) publications to her credit.

Mr. Isaac Asiamah Yeboah (MSc, BSc) is a vibrant young man with versatileknowledge and experience in Mathematics (Optimisation), Information

Communication and Technology, and Engineering.

As a member of the administration with such a high expertise, he is able toassist in the day-today activities of the Centre.

His attitude towards work is exceptional. Isaac is inarguably eloquent andadaptive to changes. He has the skill to analyse scientific issues. Isaac has had

the opportunity to work with Pond Security and LKS Kroenenburger GmbH inEurope.

Nyemitei Odjidja is a Principal IT Manager at the Centre. He has served as a SeniorIT Assistant at the University of Ghana Computing Systems Multimedia Unit.

Nyemitei holds a Masters’ Degree in Information Technology from the SikkimManipal University, India and a Bachelor of Science in AgriculturalEngineering, KNUST, Ghana.

He is also a CompTIA IT Health Technician, a Cisco Certified Cyber SecurityProfessional (CCNA CyberOPs) and a trained global networking professional at

the India Institute of Hardware Technology (IIHT).

As an IT Manager at the MTSC, his roles include programming simulation software to model manikins’physiological responses to instructor specifications and running pre-programmed scenarios with instructors,operating and maintaining audio/visual equipment used in simulation.

Ben Boakye Mensah is a young graduate with excellent organizational skills andgood leadership qualities, either as a team player or as an individual.

He attended Opoku Ware Secondary School from 2006 to 2008 where hestudied Business. He then went to read Marketing at Kumasi Polytechnicfrom 1999 to 2003 where he attained an HND certificate in Marketing.

Ben then went to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in2004 to 2008 to read Law and obtained an LLB certificate. He started work at

Coca Cola Company Ltd. as an Operations officer in 2013, and a year later was movedto supervise the Empties Department.

In 2015, Ben joined Groupe Nduom as the Compliance Officer for Pentrust Ltd.

Ben joined the Medical Training and Simulation Centre at the University of Ghana Medical Centre in January2020 as a Senior Administrative Manager and a Personal Assistant to the Director.
