Think funny thoughts - Researchers have learned that it’s not only laughter itself that can bestow health benefits; they’ve discovered that even the anticipation of a positive humorous laughter experience reduces potentially detrimental stress hormones.

Laugh it up to reduce pain -If chronic pain has got you down, spend time with a funny friend, rent a side-splitting movie or visit your local comedy club. Laughing can help take the edge off your discomfort. To get the soothing benefits, your laugh should be hearty and unrestrained. And the longer you laugh, the higher your pain tolerance. Our health talks take place the first Friday of each month. We begin with breakfast at 9:30 a.m. in the Keeton Auditorium followed by informative talks on emerging health topics at 10:30 a.m. in the Theatre.

JANUARY 8 - Blood Pressure Medications & Managing Side Effects Any medication may cause side effects, and high blood pressure medications are no exception. It's important to stay informed and work closely with your doctor to manage any side effects you may have. There's no reason to "suffer in silence." Today there are more medication options than ever for managing high blood pressure (hypertension).

FEBRUARY 5 - Can Anybody Hear Me? Being a patient or having a family member as a patient may be frightening or confusing. Learn how to advocate for yourself as a patient or how a family member may advocate for you during healthcare visits or hospital stays.

MARCH 4 - Is This Stress Or Am I Having A Stroke?Are you stressed? Is your head throbbing, and you just don’t feel right? Anxiety, migraines, blood sugar changes, and lots of other things can make you feel weak and funny, but understand the importance of calling 911 right away if you experience a terrible headache, weakness, trouble walking or talking, or vision loss. In the event of a stroke, learn what happens on the way to the hospital, while in the Emergency Department, during your hospital stay and potential rehabilitation.

On November 23, Community Outreach Coordinator Mel Meadows and her family welcomed baby Nina Alexandra. Everyone is doing well. We look forward to seeing Mel back in mid February.

In the meantime, Suzanne Wilson, our former Community Outreach Coordinator, will be assisting us again with Senior Spectrum. You may also see some new faces helping the Community Outreach staff.
