PERU

LimaOnce the pride of the Spanish colonialists, still retains enough history and character to tantalise and charm tourists. Lima is sophisticated, with civilization that dates back millennia. Stately museums display sublime pottery; galleries debut edgy art; solemn religious processions recall the 18th century and crowded nightclubs dispense tropical beats. Shrouded in history, gloriously messy and full of aesthetic delights. A big draw card is the vibrant neighbourhood of Mirafl ores with numerous clubs, bars and jazzy tunes to entertain the night owls. Where locals stroll through the streets and children play in the parks till late at night.

Best time to visit PeruThe peak tourist season is from May to October, and it peaks in July and August. Winter, from June to September, is the best time for the Inca Trail due to the wonderful visibility.

Travel to Peru and discover the secret land of the Incas as you journey along the coastal shores of Lima, travel beneath the Amazon Jungle’s lush canopy, past the llama-fi lled plains of the Sacred Valley and beyond to tiny colonial towns. A land of friendly people, archaeological wonders and historic interest dating back to pre-Inca times. There are many more wonderful sights in Peru, including the mysterious Nazca Lines, the impressive Colca Canyon and the rugged wilds that hem the stalwart fortress of Kuelap. Peru is a gastronomic haven for the food-lovers. The great geographic and cultural diversity has brought ingredients ranging from highland tubers to tropical fruits to a complex cuisine of Spanish, indigenous, African and Asian infl uences.

CuzcoA vibrant city with an ancient charm and sacred capital of the Inca Empire that believed it to be the “navel of the world”. Cuzco is the oldest continuously inhabited city in South America and the gateway to the citadel of Machu Picchu. Shiny cobbled stone roads lead to the square in the centre of town where young and old, local and foreigner can enjoy the festivities and colourful parades that takes place ever so often.

Discover so many unexplained wonders in this valley that is the gateway to Machu Picchu. From the mysterious concentric circular terraces in Moray, to the impressive salt exploitation complex at Maras and the Ollantaytambo Fortress that was a “tambo” or leisure city used to accommodate the delegations that travelled long distances. Another example of the Incas urban planning. This little village has a leisurely charm with quaint coff ee shops and a market in

the centre of the square. If hiking is not an option, then take the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes at the foot of Machu Picchu at a slow pace through the Amazon forest and look out for the Peruvian Spectacled bear, catching fi sh in the nearby river. The ride takes approximately two hours and upon arrival at Aguas Calientes, make your way across the river and jump on one of the buses to take you up to the citadel of Machu Picchu.
