THERE’S STILL TIME TO HOST A FRESH AIR

CHILD IN ALBANY AREA

CAPITAL DISTRICT - June 30th, 2014 marked the be-ginning of Fresh Air summer experiences for thousands of inner-city children and their volunteer host families as The Fresh Air Fund kicked off its 138th summer of serv-ing New York City children. By volunteering as a host family in Albany Area, NY, you can share the pure joys of summer with a Fresh Air child in your own backyard! The Fresh Air Fund is cur-rently seeking more families to give inner-city children a Fresh Air experience this summer. Fresh Air summers are fi lled with children run-ning barefoot through the grass, gazing at star-fi lled skies or swimming for the fi rst time. Each summer, over 4,000 inner-city children visit suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volun-teer Host Family Program. The Fresh Air Fund, an in-dependent, not-for-profi t agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on fi rst-time visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Children who are reinvited by host fami-lies may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Over 65 percent of all children are reinvited to stay with their host families, year after year. For more informa-tion on hosting a Fresh Air child, please contact Tenniel Hansen at 518-441-4407 or visit The Fresh Air Fund on-line at www.freshair.org.

Homeowners who want their homes to make strong fi rst impressions must pri-oritize curb appeal. Homes with strong curb appeal sell well and can impart a welcoming feel to all visi-tors. Improving curb appeal need not be expensive, and the following are a handful of ways to im-prove the appearance of your home.

1. Install a bold-looking door in a vibrant color or one with a custom design. This helps the home stand out from other properties in the neighborhood.

2. Edge the driveway to create a distinct border be-tween the driveway and the lawn or other landscaping features. This helps homes

appear neat and well kept.

3. Use outdoor lighting to make a home more invit-ing. Outdoor lighting also makes properties safer to traverse at night.

4. Clean a home’s exterior

to remove mildew or dis-colorations from the siding, driveway, patio, and other outdoor elements.

5. Improve landscapes with fresh plants and seasonal color. Homeowners with-out the time to plant can consider container gardens, which don’t take much time to assemble but still add ap-peal to a home’s exterior.

6. Prune planting beds and add new mulch to re-store color.

7. Add shutters and ac-cent trim to a home’s ex-terior to improve on the beauty of the house.

8. Install new fencing or give a fresh coat of paint or stain to an existing fence.

9. Replace concrete paths with tile or stone walkways to make entryways more impressive and inviting.

9 WAYS TO IMPROVE CURB APPEAL

If there is a custom tile or specifi c design that you re-ally like that is not within your budget for the entire kitchen or bathroom, think about using it as an accent instead. Rely on less expen-sive tiles for much of the

room, then sprinkle in the accent tiles for the style you want. The fi nished project will look high-end, but you will likely have stayed with-in your budget. You also can save money by shopping at a reuse center or one that

sells remnants and leftover materials from larger jobs. For example, it’s possible to fi nd a piece of marble or granite that would fi t per-fectly as a countertop in a bathroom.

(NAPS)—There’s good news for homeowners who want to reduce their energy costs. With a little bit of homework, savings are possible.

According to the U.S. En-vironmental Protection Agency (EPA), most Ameri-cans are paying more for electricity and natural gas than they did four years ago, with the average household utility bill now about $1,900 each year. And, according to the Department of Energy (DOE), heating and cooling accounts for about 56 per-cent of the energy use in a

typical U.S. home, making it the largest energy expense for most homes.

To reduce these costs, the experts at the Luxaire® brand of heating and air conditioning recommend the following:

• Adjust your thermostat. By raising your thermostat just a few degrees in mild tem-peratures and lowering it in cooler temperatures, you can help your heating and cooling system work less to maintain a comfortable in-door temperature. Program-ming your thermostat to

accommodate your family’s time away from home and sleeping schedules will also help to ensure that your sys-tem is operating only when you need it.

• Install a dehumidifi er. Hu-midity can make the air feel hotter and heavier in warm weather. By removing the humidity, the air will feel drier and cooler and you will be able to rely less heavily on your heating and cooling system to make the air com-fortable.

• Perform regular mainte-nance. Clean air fi lters, seal

any duct leaks and make sure the areas around your system are clear of obstruc-tions. According to the EPA, improper insulation can re-duce system effi ciency by up to 30 percent.

• Have your existing home comfort system inspected and serviced by a qualifi ed technician. The technician will make sure your system is working properly and at peak effi ciency. A knowl-edgeable technician will also be able to recommend a new, more effi cient replace-ment system, such as ENER-GY STAR®–qualifi ed equip-ment that can help you save money on energy bills.

• Learn more. To learn more about effi cient products that can help you save money

and energy, or to fi nd a heat-ing and cooling contractor, visit www.luxaire.com.

According to the Depart-ment of Energy, heating and cooling accounts for about

56 percent of the energy use

in a typical U.S. home, mak-

ing it the largest energy ex-

pense for most homes.

A lush, green lawn is coveted by many current and would-be homeowners. Not only can a beautiful landscape make a home feel more welcoming, but it also increases the re-sale value of a property.

Frequent watering, proper fertilization, pest management, and mowing are all essential components of lawn mainte-nance. But there is more to those beautiful blades of grass than just aesthetic appeal. The following are some inter-esting facts about grass that even the most devoted lawn enthusiasts might be surprised to learn.

* Grass is de ned as any plant of the family Gramineae, a group of vascular plants that grow across the globe.

* There are as many as 10,000 varieties of grass in the world. These range from grass to rice to wheat to bamboo.

* Many grasses are annual or perennial herbs with brous roots and rhizomes.

* Grass can withstand many di erent climates and has been discovered at the North Pole and at the equator.

* Twenty percent of Earth’s vegetation is comprised of grass.

* Grasses have been transformed into paper and home de-cor items. Bamboo, which is a type of grass, is frequently used for ooring because it is durable and sustainable.

* Grass is mostly comprised of water, which makes up

FAST FACTS ABOUT GRASS

about 80 percent of grass and 90 percent of grass clippings.

* A typical lawn will have about six grass plants per square inch. Some lawns may have millions of grass plants.

* The average lawn releases enough oxygen to sustain four families of four.

(NAPS)—In the last two years, one in every four homeowners has experi-enced a power outage last-ing 12 hours or more, aver-aging more than $1,900 in property damage, according to a survey by Harris Interac-tive—but you don’t have to be among them.

Here’s how: You can join the increasing number of home-owners who invest in backup power solutions and por-table generators to keep the power on and avoid the costs and inconvenience of power outages.

Kinds Of Generators

Portable generators work well as an immediate solu-tion during an emergency power outage and can pow-er a wide range of essential items, such as a refrigerator, a TV and selected lights. Porta-ble generators are also useful for camping or tailgating.

For a long-term solution, however, backup power generators, also known as standby or home generators, are professionally and per-manently installed and use

a home’s fuel source (liquid propane or natural gas).

Standby generators turn on using an automatic transfer switch, usually less than a minute after a power outage occurs, and can power more of a home’s appliances.

What To Do Through The Year

These season-by-season tips from Briggs & Stratton on us-ing generators can help you be prepared all year long.

Spring: Prepare for power outages by establishing an emergency plan for your family that includes a backup power source. Get advice from a professional and remember permanently installed home standby gen-erators require professional installation that is best com-pleted in warmer months.

For portable generators:

• Run real-world tests for starting and running your generator so you know ex-actly what to do in an emer-gency, how to safely place your generator during use and how to test your CO

monitor.

• Ensure that the battery is charged if you have an elec-tric starter.

• Perform factory-recom-mended maintenance ac-cording to the operator’s manual.

• Stock up on items you may need for your generator dur-ing a storm, such as extra oil, lters, fuel, gas cans, heavy-duty extension cords and plugs.

Summer: Whole-house gen-erators turn on automatically and the status of some mod-els can even be monitored by a mobile device, so there’s less to think about from an operational standpoint.

Portable generator safety tips:

• Don’t run a portable gener-ator inside the house or ga-rage or near doors, windows or vents as exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odor-less and colorless gas that causes illness and death.

• When using a portable gen-erator, connect the equip-ment you want to power di-

rectly to it. Don’t connect the portable generator to your electrical system.

• Turn off your portable gen-erator and let it cool down before refueling so spilled fuel doesn’t ignite on hot en-gine parts.

• Keep portable generators away from children’s play areas, swing sets and other equipment and set up on level ground.

Fall: Consider upgrading to a standby propane genera-tor or natural gas generator, which needs to be profes-sionally installed before the ground freezes.

Portable owners should check their CO monitor and perform manufacturer’s rec-ommended generator main-tenance and safety inspec-tion to con rm their backup power source is in top run-ning condition.

Winter: While home power generator owners bene t from the unit’s automatic

weekly test cycle to ensure it’s ready to operate when needed, it’s still important for snow to be cleared from around the unit outside.

Portable generator owners should:

• Test their generator every month.

• Restock any items they may need to run a portable gen-erator during a storm.

Planning and maintaining a garden requires a lot of eff ort, which can result in an aesthetically pleasing addition to the landscape. But that hard work can also fall victim to nature when local wildlife fi nd a garden too mouth-watering to re-sist.

In an eff ort to rid a garden of unwanted pests, gar-deners may unwittingly scare away animals and insects that might just pro-tect the garden from more

THESE ANIMALS MAY HELP YOUR GARDEN

ill-intentioned animals. Not every creature that scurries is out to get prized petunias or to devour tomatoes. In fact, many can prove benefi -cial to gardens.

Bats

Bats have a bad reputation, as people unnecessarily fear bats because they believe them to be carriers of dis-ease. But many bats feed off of insects or fruits and will not harm a human. The average brown bat can eat 1,000 mosquitoes in an hour,

so it’s easy to see why bats are good to have around. Mosquitoes are not only a nuisance but also harbor po-tentially dangerous diseases. Bats also may eat certain ro-dents, which can cut down on the number of animals burrowing in a yard.

Frogs

Frogs and toads will prey on insects and make the lo-cal insect population more manageable. Toads eat mainly slugs, who feed on the leaves and fruits of many plants. Frogs and toads are attracted to water, so includ-ing a pond or another water feature in the garden will provide them with a habitat they like.

Birds

While it is true that some birds can damage crops, many birds are content to feed on insects attracted to the garden, which helps to keep insect numbers in check. Chickadees, for exam-ple, will dine on aphid eggs, while larger birds may prey

on mice or other rodents or simply scare them out of the garden. Jays and mocking-birds are known to be feisty and can even deter dogs and cats from a yard. Humming-birds will sip on the nectar of fl owers and help pollinate plants.

Snakes

Snakes in a garden can be disconcerting to some people, but snakes are ideal predators who feed on in-

sects and rodents several times their size. Snakes are the right size and shape to invade the burrows of pest animals.

Butter ies and bees

Butterfl ies and bees are re-sponsible for pollinating the vast majority of plants. Avoid using pesticides that may diminish butterfl y or bee populations. A beehive right next to a garden may not be practical, but don’t make

attempts to destroy it. Con-

sult with a professional bee-

keeper to see what can be

done to move the beehive

without destroying it.

Many animals and insects

can be detrimental to the

health of a garden. How-

ever, several animals are

handy to have around and

should be welcomed to the

landscape.

Many students take the bus to school twice a day, fi ve days a week. Approximately 26 million elementary and secondary school children ride school buses daily in the United States, and the U.S. Department of Trans-

SAFETY TIPS FOR SCHOOL BUS RIDERSportation says more than 50 percent of all K-12 students in the country ride yellow school buses, traveling ap-proximately 4 billion miles each year.

The vast majority of these miles are traveled without

incident. In fact, according to the National Safety Council, the national school bus acci-dent rate is 0.01 per 100 miles traveled, compared to 0.96 for other passenger vehicles, which makes school buses considerably safer than other passenger vehicles.

Though school buses are safe, there are other ways to make them even safer. Children, es-pecially those new to school buses, may fi nd the bus fun and unique and not pay at-tention to simple safety rules. But parents should take steps

to ensure that youngsters always heed the following school bus safety guidelines.

* Wait for the bus in a safe lo-cation that is away from traf-fi c, ideally staying in a desig-nated school bus stop until the bus arrives.

* Dress for optimal vis-ibility, especially in inclement weather when it can be diffi -cult for the school bus driver and other motorists to see pedestrians.

* Do not board the bus until it comes to a complete stop. Wait for the driver to open the door, which engages the “Stop” sign for oncoming mo-torists.

* Use the handrail and enter the bus in an orderly manner.

* Promptly fi nd a seat, sit down and buckle the safety belt if there is one available. Students assigned seats on the bus should take their seat without making a fuss.

* Keep backpacks and other belongings out of the center aisle. Store them under your seat or on your lap.
