Introduction

Establishment SMEDA was established in October 1998

to take on the challenge of developing Small & Medium Enterprises (SME’s) in Pakistan.

SMEDA is relatively a new organization with a futuristic structure and focus on providing business development services to small and medium enterprises.

SMEDA has been established by the Government of Pakistan as a key resource base and facilitator of Small & Medium Enterprises in the country.

SMEDA operates as an autonomous body at the Federal level with the mandate of developing SMEs on sustainable basis through a diverse range of structured initiatives covering support services like.

SMEDA SME Definition

An SME entity is defined as a business with an investment in productive assets (not including land and building) ranging between Rs. 2-40 million and employing between 10-99 workers.

SME Sector in Pakistan

In the industrial development of a country the importance of the SME sector cannot be overemphasized.

SMEs constitute nearly 90% of all the enterprises in Pakistan; employ 80% of the non-agricultural labor force; and their share in the annual GDP is 40%, approximately.

SMEDA also interact with the SMEs working in industrial sectors such as Agriculture, Fisheries, Textiles, Weaving, Transport, Leather,, Carpets and Light Engineering.

This interaction takes place at the individual as well as collective level to provide proactive and responsive financial, technical, management and marketing services to SMEs.
