PROPERTY NEWS
Property specialist Leaders raised morethan £30,000 for Macmillan CancerSupport during 2014. The firm wasdelighted to exceed its target of £25,000,
raising a total of £31,200 to help ensure that noone faces cancer alone in the UK.
Over the year, staff from Leaders’ 85 branchesacross the UK have run, cycled, baked, dressedup, been ice-bucketed, gone sober and more, toraise money for their charity partner Macmillan. The firm also auctioned off a special selection ofchildren’s artwork as part of its annual drawingcompetition and organised more than 60 coffeemornings across the country as part ofMacmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.
Leaders’ Managing Director, Paul Weller, said:“We are delighted to have raised this sum ofmoney for such an excellent charity. The workMacmillan does in supporting people living withcancer and their families is remarkable. Thankyou to all our staff, our clients, businessassociates and the general public who havesupported our fundraising so generously.”

THE LANDLADYThe future’s black and beardy …
Awalk up Whitehawk HillRoad behind the RoyalSussex County Hospitalquickly reveals unbeatable
views across the city. The PalacePier can suddenly be seen abovethe roofs of the seafront buildingsbelow, and then Marine Gate, theMarina and so on. Best of all arethe views towards the east fromWhitehawk Hill itself, said to bethe best place in the city to watchlow winter sunsets.
Although the area is by nomeans quiet, it is hardly on thebeaten track. Many residents of Brighton & Hove have never heard of theCraven Vale allotments at the top of the hill and fewer have explored them, which is a real shame as they are quite magical – but sadly under threat as asite for housing.
The Craven Vale allotments consist of around 140 individual plots. Theirstatus as statutory allotments (which means that development can only takeplace with the Secretary of State’s permission), and their location beside bothcommon land and the Whitehawk Hill Camp scheduled ancient monument,do make development tricky. Nevertheless, a council-commissioned urbanfringe study has identified the site as suitable for housing.
I am fully won over by the arguments of campaigners, including siterepresentative and sheep lookerer Jane Hawkins, who strongly makes thecase for the benefit of allotments generally and the unsuitability of this site forhousing. I would add that we should be very wary indeed of allowing anygreen spaces locally to be built on. If we have to build then let’s go tallelsewhere.
I enjoyed my visit immensely and was fascinated to see Whitehawk Hilltransmitting station, which opened in 1959 on the site of a World War II radarstation, so close. I thoroughly support the campaign to keep this space as it is.www.buildingopinions.com [email protected]

• LATEST HOMES 07 www.latesthomes.co.uk •
Much as I hate to end one year andstart another on a black note, there were many things about2014 that really annoyed me.
Since when did we turn our backs and allowthe UK – well, the South East at least – tobecome so homogenised? December lastyear brought the sad new that MadameJojo’s in London had had their licenserevoked, thus thrusting the final nail in thecoffin of lovely Soho, which used to be a
place where anything could – and generally did – happen. I should know; Ispent most of my teenage years and early twenties there proving thepudding. I even used to have a nightclub there in the nineties ... sold off toaccommodate Cross Rail, a train line which will no doubt hurtle morebland people with greater efficiencyfrom the suburbs to their high-earning jobs in the city.
I’m afraid that New York, alwaysahead of the UK in the style stakes, has suffered a similar fate. Mynative New Yorker friends regularlybemoan the fact that their onceedgy city has now changed beyondrecognition, giving way to beige, paunchy homogenisation. When I wasvisiting last, my friends painstakingly took me to all the remaining ‘oldschool’ venues they could still find among the chain stores and pretentiousbling. I was increasingly irritated by the rash of New Yorkers crowding thepavements, restaurants and – somewhat bizarrely – department stores, with nasty little ‘toy dogs’ they treat like hairy children.
Back in the UK, we adopted ‘Black Friday’ for the first time last year.Whatever next? Thanksgiving turkey, anyone?! Independence Dayperhaps? But the trend that really got my goat(ee) last year was the ‘beardand tattoo’ look prevalent all over Brighton. A word to the wise guys – notone of myfemale friends, either old oryoung, fanciesguys withbeards.Similarly, women thesedays often seemto favour the‘boiled egg withpainted oneyebrows’ look, which, although keeping beauty salons in business, is yet another pall-bearer to the coffin of originality. If we carry on, the entire future will beblack. Let alone Friday. Happy New Year, everyone!

IT’S ELF TIMEAustin Rees sponsors ‘Elf on the Twelfth’ in aid of Rockinghorse to bring festive cheer and fun tothe hospital over Christmas
Austin Rees were, again, proud to be supporting Elf on theTwelfth – a fundraising day organised by local children’s charityRockinghorse. As last year, this day was embraced by all of our
staff, friends and contractors. All our willing staff dressed as elves on this fun day and we were privileged enough tobe invited up to the hospital again.
A group of our elves visited the RoyalAlexander Hospital and Trevor Mann Baby Uniton Friday afternoon. We spent time with thechildren at their Christmas party, joining in thefun and games. After the party, a group of ourelves visited the poorly children in the hospitalwards who had been unable to make theChristmas party.
Unfortunately there were some children we could not visit, but forthose we were able to spend time with, we gave presents and sat andspoke with them and their parents. We were all excited at being given theopportunity to help these children and we would like to thank Ryan Healand Analiese Doctrove for helping to make this happen.
We would like to say how humbled we were by the strength of the
children and were pleased that we wereable to bring a smile to their faces when wearrived. The nurses, always so very patient, took time to introduce us to the children –
to this point, we would like tosay how wonderful the nursesare. They are truly angels in uniform.
A lot of the presents hadbeen purchased particularly for this day but we would like to mention a very dearclient, Gwen Stapleton MBE,
who spent hours creating knitted teddybears which she kindly donated to us, inaddition to a Nativity Set. Gwen is a 94 year old lady, very much involvedin her own charity work. You can experience some of our day on LatestLive, which captures a small window of the day we spent.Austin Rees is appealing to all local businesses to donate money via their giving page: www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/AustinElves2014

With Christmas fast approaching andwinter setting in, it seems appropriate to focus on a building element thatstands above the rest – often out of sight
and out of mind – but this time of year a staple inEuropean folklore for the legendary big bellied fellawith a long beard and red clothes; jolly old SaintNick (also known as Santa Claus).
A chimney (or middle English ‘chimenee’) is ofcourse a structure, often constructed from bricksand mortar, containing a vertical flue leading fromthe throat of the fireplace to project from the roof, carried above the ridgeline of the building within a stack, designed to carry smoke to the outsideatmosphere.
Cowls are traditionally fitted to chimney potslocated on top of the chimney stack to increase thedraught and prevent wind and rainwater enteringinto the building. Pots are held in position by asloped mortar fillet known as flaunching; this alsodirects surface rainwater away. Flashings, oftenflexible lead material, are typically installed wherethe chimney passes through the roof coverings andare intended to eliminate rainwater from the roofvoid. The stack is named after the vertically stackedbricks (or sometimes stone) bound together bymortar.
Chimneys have been an important part ofbuildings for centuries. However, before the 12thcentury, the main fire set was said to be positionedwithin the centre of the property. Notoriouslyinefficient and dangerous, smoke would escapethrough a purpose made gap in the roof covering, although most enclosed dwellings stayed full ofsmoke. Cheaper ineffective chimneys were latercreated from timber, waddle and daub, however these remained susceptibleto spread of fire.
The evolution of chimneys has evolved significantly in modern years.Nowadays, buildings are designed without the necessity for chimneys due tosustainable heating systems. Refurbished buildings are seeing chimney stacksbeing demolished or capped off with the chimney breasts removed for extrafloor space (always seek local authority approval). Alternatively, somerefurbishment properties are utilising the existing flues, which areretrospectively lined and a contemporary wood burning stove installed.
Chimneys are stacked up in many different shapes and sizes and all servethe same function if maintained correctly.
POTENTIAL MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS COULD INCLUDE:1. Structural instability2. Sulphate attack3. Friable mortar4. Spalling brickwork5. Rainwater penetration
The above list is not exhaustive,so don’t ignore any other problems;consult a local Chartered Surveyorto inspect any defects and reportupon the best method of repair. And, remember, if you have anopen fire do ensure it is regularlycleaned, particularly in time forChristmas Eve.www.grantjamescrossley.com

PROPERTY NEWS
“Making forecasts for the future is never easy,as George Osborne will attest, but based on2014 figures and theinterest levels we achieve
on a daily basis, we are fairlyoptimistic that the new homesmarket will continue to flourishin the coming year,” says JoRichards, Head of Sales and Marketing at Hillreed Homes.
2014 has been a good yearfor developers and buyersalike. The Government’s Helpto Buy scheme is assisting many to get on theproperty ladder with reduced deposits and otherfinancial benefits. New Stamp Duty cuts mean areduction in costs for an estimated 98% of buyers.
Jo continued; “The market in the South Eastfor new homes is continuing to be buoyant andfollowing a very active year we do not anticipate a downturn in 2015.
“The latest news, launched in the AutumnStatement, radically reducing the cost of StampDuty for those buying, can only be good news. The only slight downside may well be thatdemand will be higher than supply as developersstrive to build homes for the many who enjoy thebenefits of owning a 21st century built property.”
Hillreed Homes offers a variety of incentives to buyers which include Help to Buy which
effectively reduces the initial askingprice of a property. Full information on how this scheme works, enablingbuyers to proceedwith just a 5%deposit, can befound on theHillreed Homeswebsite.
There is alsoHome Change,where Hillreed
Homes will appoint the estateagent but without the fees.Part Exchange is also anoption, whereby the developer purchases thebuyer’s current property.
In addition, offers andincentives change weekly onspecific plots, so a regularreferral to Hillreed’scomprehensive website is a must to seize a bargain or secure your dream plot.
Hillreed Homes is currentlymarketing luxury apartments
in Sevenoaks, and a wide choice of family homesat Iwade and Kings Hill, all in Kent. Delightfulthree bedroom houses are being built inHurstpierpoint in West Sussex.www.hillreed.co.uk
