By creating L’Atelier in 2005, our first objective was to select film projects varied in their themes, their geo-graphical distribution and creative invention. The second was to ensure that these projects, each supported by a producer who has already gath-ered part of the funding, could be made quickly. The third was to limit the selection of 15 projects to ensure greater exposure for them and get the best results for everyone. For this 14th edition, 15 unique voices from 15 countries can be heard, from the newly-discovered director to the well-known filmmaker. The projects, carried along by independant pro-ducers, reflect their battle for the defense and illustration of a demand-ing and innovative cinema.Of the 202 projects presented during the thirteen years of L’Atelier, 145 have already been completed and 28 are in pre-production. By invit-ing directors and their producers to meet hundreds of potential part-ners each year during the Festival of Cannes (producers, distributors, funding bodies, etc.), L’Atelier offers the projects access to international co-production, thereby maximizing their chances of being made.We would like to acknowledge your strong support in the previous years. For a future as successful as the past, we are counting on you.
SYNOPSISA post-apartheid South Africa is thrusted into a deep-rooted fear of an apocalyptic civil war as freedom fighter Nelson Mandela’s last breath nears. Situated beneath the grand Drakensberg Mountain range next to a traditional Zulu settlement, a puri-tanical Afrikaner community prepare to fight for their land, culture and lives as their enemy does the same. As the great racial war nears, various fractions of suprema-cist militia sound their calls drawing Pieter, a young white boy (13), into the hysteria by enlisting him in one of their camps. Meanwhile, fleeing from a dubious past in a burning Johannesburg, Thato (23), a young black man, arrives to the Zulu settle-ment where he will be drawn into an endless cycle of violence. In a time of mass paranoia and bloodshed, the two youths, from each side, must bare the scars of a nation’s deepest wounds.
INTENTIONAs a South African citizen born after the Apartheid, I intend for this film to unreservedly investigate the crip-pling and fatal consequences of the propagation of hateful ideologies. The film centres on the prevailing themes
of national destabi-lization, the death of Mandela’s South African dream, the loss of innocence and the aftermath of hate. It is a warn-ing to a global soci-ety that seems to
be steeped in a totalitarian approach to race and religion, needlessly inflict-ing terror and bloodshed through the justification of murderous ideologies. Since the time of historical South African wars, there has been a fight for ownership of the lands, one that was a central catalyst to the estab-lishment of the apartheid system. Often a subject of taboo, these ten-sions still exist silently today.

must bare the scars of a nation’s

SYNOPSIS1516.
SYNOPSISIt is the year 1516. Algiers is a small Arabian-Berber republic, suffocated by the Spaniards, who have had control of the harbour for six years. King Salim Toumi makes an alliance with the pirate Barberousse in order to free the city. After their victory, Salim is assassi-nated in his bath-tub. Barberousse becomes the new ruler of Algiers, and is confronted with a rebellion. Both history and legend tell that Salim Toumi, the last King of Algiers, had a wife named Zaphira, and that Aroudj Barberousse desired her. Barberousse is supposed to have said: “I will take his palace, and I will mount his horse and his wife.”.
INTENTIONThe film is set in 16th century Algiers. This was a time of political and social upheaval, an identity crisis, out of which emerged the foundations of a new Algiers. How can we bring to life this period of history that has
been ignored for so long, and how can we tell the story of this Last Queen, this woman whose very existence has never ceased to be both disputed and
upheld by historians through the cen-turies? The novelistic and baroque narrative is told from the female point of view, attempting to capture these expunged voices, in order to explore history from a different angle. To travel far back in time, back to a multi-cultural, ambitious and adventurous Algiers; in order to return and shake up contemporary Algeria, to refresh her memory and stir up her desire and her imagination.

SYNOPSISOn account of an ambiguous event, entrances and exits into a Berlin courtyard are blocked for the time being. Having received no informa-tion from the police over this state of emergency, residents of the build-ings opening to this courtyard, begin to speculate. First they assume that there is a bomb planted right out-side the door, then another rumour about a criminal hiding in the court-yard quickly spreads. This state of crisis and insecurity in which every single person is seen as a poten-tial suspect by the others, not only changes the course of daily life but also ignites human relationships. Among the neighbours who’ve been sharing the same building for many years without ever acquainting with each other, insecurities start to pump fear. Suspicion takes over panic, prej-udices bring polarization and another question appears… Is the real danger coming from inside or outside?
INTENTIONWe are part of societies governed by a widespread affliction called fear and its by-product insecurity. Everyone is a potential suspect and paranoia is the norm. It is the post-truth period. Honesty collapses and lying is an
acceptable strategy in politics. Although I envisioned the courtyard as the mini-model of a country inspired by the current state of affairs in my home
country Turkey, I intend to devise the sub-plots in the film as a reflection of increasing status of emergency all around the world. As such, I’d like to have an eye on people’s sudden and unexpected transformation in an oppressive environment and the con-sequential moments of tragicomical quality. My aim is to achieve a style that balances tension with black humor.

SYNOPSISYashar is a 55-year-old unemployed roofer living with his wife Nisa in a remote Azerbaijan village, spend-ing evenings watching meaning-less TV shows. One day Nisa finds him a roofing job, and to assist him Yashar hires his brother’s son, Valeh, whom he hasn’t seen in years and who happens to be in dire need of money. Both start working very hard but Yashar strug-gles getting paid by the house owner. Pressure rises on Yashar who committed to paying his nephew. One evening, during an argument, Yashar loses control and beats Valeh, who will never show up again. The second half of the film takes Yashar on a long journey, where alone and relentlessly he looks for Valeh, from the cities of Barda, to Imishli, Agdash, Goychay, crossing car cemeteries, deserted landscapes, encountering dubious characters, helpful ones, all reflecting the hidden and vivid realities of the country.
INTENTIONWith this film I aim to create an outer and an inner travel to the unknown parts of my country using Yashar as some “human probe” which reflects and registers hopes, fears and pain of inhabitants of my beloved and doomed homeland.

SYNOPSIS20 years after the end of Revolution and the resumption of Gaokao, comes an age of changes, anxieties and riots: death of Deng, Chinese sovereignty over Hong Kong, domestic economic reform laying off workers. With an admission rate of 40%, the repeating education program is the only way for students rejected by colleges to restart and make a change of their life. The story of The Summer Factory happens in such program held in an abandoned factory in a small town in 1997. Filled with literature and music, it’s about freedom, independence and desire.Gao Ming, devoted to literature – his mental escape – drops out of school because of his growing divergence with his literature teacher. Xiang Fei, passionate about rock music and guitar, suffering from his mom’s extreme supervision, steps on a train to Beijing. Huang Jing, daughter of a single mom, best of her class, merely failed to enter a top school. One physical interaction with a man unleash her desire, depriving her focus with exams coming up.
INTENTIONIn a country with so many conflicts going on, Gaokao, a national exam system, is not only THE opportunity for people from marginal areas to change their fates, but also a social mechanism that leaves marks on
Chinese youth.Such a topic should not be absent from Chinese cinema, and it deserves to be examined and criticized through the film. Why can
an exam have such a long-lasting and profound influence on a person? What kind of expectation for person-ality is conveyed behind this regime? The story presents a subtle game between growth and reality, exploring the relationship between the needs of recognition and the logic of reality, action and reaction.Besides, it’s a souvenir of my youth and a need for my last 20 years, also my reflection and criticism on a high speed developing China.

le but ».
SYNOPSISA man and a woman cross Syria at war. Taysir, a 40 years old Syrian, was exiled in France but returns to Syria despite the risks to carry the body of his elder brother Kamal, who died during the fighting ravaging the country. He must take him for burial where their ances-tors lie, in their home village in the north of the country. Juliette, his French passenger, wants to leave the country to return to France. They don’t know each other but they will have to travel together. During their journey, they learn that Taysir’s brother had joined the jihad-ists’ camp, a betrayal that for Taysir questions his mission. But there is no turning back. And Taysir and Juliette will get to know each other during this trip and despite the threats they go through. They will eventually, at the end of their journey, bury Kamal’s remains on Mesopotamian land. A new lease of life.
INTENTIONMy approach as a director has always been fed by the raw mate-rial of documentary. Throughout the writing process, one sentence guided me in this encounter with reality: “the path to the goal changes the goal”.
This idea underlies the narrative struc-ture, the evolution of the inner journey of the characters during their voyage from one end of the country to the other.
All the spaces in the film will not be set out beforehand, so that the land-scapes can resonate with the inti-mate spaces. The landscapes that are crossed will then be like the visual translation of Taysir and Juliette’s inner journey. It will also be essen-tial to tell the armed conflict they are going through off-screen, especially by using sound, which, in my view, will represent the presence of war more strongly than images.
Il retourne au pays pour enterrer son
frère révolutionnaire auprès des siens.
He must carry the body of his elder brother to burry him where their
ancestors lie.

BIOGRAPHIE DU RÉALISATEUR
Quand j’étais plus jeune, je me faisais
souvent gronder à cause des histoires
que j’inventais. C’était un luxe dangereux
de prendre de telles libertés ; les histoires
pourraient être trouvées ou entendues et
prises comme la vérité et des personnes
innocentes pourraient facilement dispa-
raître. J’avais découvert le pouvoir de la
narration.

When I was younger I was often scolded
for the stories I invented. It was a danger-
ous luxury to take such liberties; the stories
could be found or heard and taken for truth
and innocent people could easily vanish.
I had discovered the power of storytelling.
Of course I meant no harm, I was just a
seven year-old trying to understand the
world and the insidious political environment
I was born into. It is this particular environ-
ment that has nourished my hunger for sto-
ries. I am a filmmaker / storyteller who has
shared her life between the Haiti, United
States, and France. A post-modern gypsy,
a hybrid, my trajectory and cultural identity
pretty much pervades my sensibility, vision
and cinematic language. As a daughter of
immigrants I always find myself attracted to
and gravitating around the same recurring
themes of the unending search for home,
foreignness, loss and memory.

SYNOPSISThrough the eyes of a young woman, the story of her family’s exile unfolds, also the lingering traumas of their country’s brutal dic-tatorship, as they struggle to adapt in the new homeland.A riveting tale, of family, love, and secrets set against the backdrop of New York in the tumultuous 70s.
INTENTIONI wanted to evoke a close-knit family of strangers, the repercussion of
secrets, trauma and displace-ment, contrasted with the children’s joy and confusion as they re-invent themselves in a new place, in a
new language. These parallel atmos-pheres collide and coexist, silence and whispers are interrupted by the soundscape of New York, the crow-ing of rooster, but also a soundtrack composed of disco, R&B of the 70s, Haitian compas, Latin-American boleros and French pop. I intend to create a rich and textured cinemas-cape that is rarely inhabited by people of color with nuanced characters and not archetypes, characters that are foreign and yet feel achingly famil-iar. The characters are gleaned from various people I knew growing up in Haiti and the United States. I intend to make a film inspired by reality but with the freedom to distort it to give it new meaning and resonance.
Les traumatismes persistants de la
dictature brutale de leur pays d’origine
rejaillissent.

SYNOPSISWe’re the Kids in America is a trip-tych about three generations of Irish fathers and sons. The film is set in Ireland in 1957 and 1984 and in New York in 2018. The film depicts the cycle of violence and alcoholism while exploring the theme of coloniza-tion and culpabil-ity. Even though Liam, a laborer tries to drown his son Johnnie in the opening to the film, in the third act he saves his friend from drowning at great risk to his own life. Sixty years later his grandson, Christian now a father in New York is arrested for having a pocketknife that his father Johnnie had given to him. His estranged oldest son, Ned is forced to rescue his much younger brother Marco. The following Christmas, Christian rings Ned standing out-side of Key Food. Ned answers his phone and lies to his father. Christian wanders the streets stumbling onto a couple making love. He gazes across at a pub window filled with indecision he stands frozen in the frame.
INTENTIONWe’re the Kids in America was inspired from wanting to capture a silent explosion in the life of a first generation Irish American teenage boy named Ned, when he finds him-self in a moment of crisis where he
has to make a dif-ficult decision. An image I had was of a teenage boy gazing at rows of Christmas trees and not being able
to afford one on Christmas Eve. I want a gritty aesthetic creating three different visual styles for the varying time periods. I want tracking shots of the three main characters. The camera will alternate between hand-held cameras with wider lenses when the environment is less stable. In con-trast, smoother tracking shots will capture the more anchored scenes using longer lenses. This film is a love song to family and to a homeland that suffered through colonization.

SYNOPSISA film where reality is captured, ini-tiated, and staged. The timeline of the film is the advent season of December 2018 to New Year’s day 2019. An echo from postmodern society, a contemporary mirror.
INTENTION“The gray scale of life” is a vital ele-ment of my writing and film making in general. The mundane path we walk searching for happiness, looking for meaning. If we wander into the shad-ows then the knowledge of light is
what can guide us, and when we step into the brightest light we only know how lucky we are because we know the darkness.
In Echo, I want to reflect on our contemporary society using the Christmas season as a frame. I use fragments of reality to express a nar-rative and the narrative to portray emotions. The reason I make films is to convey emotions and I always leave a strong personal imprint on the subject matter at hand. Echo is a “Neo Vérité”, an observational cinema that captures the reality of life, a contemporary mirror.

SYNOPSISFar from Tel Aviv and big city crimes, Daphna, 40, a promising police officer with a big mouth, finds her-self in the small town of Afula deal-ing with petty crimes, seeking shade from the scorching heat and dodging the nagging ques-tion: ”When are you going to get married, and have kids?”.The disappearance of Orly Elimeleh, a beautiful and wild 36 year-old army widow and former beauty queen, soon raises another troubling question for Daphna – why isn’t anybody looking for her? This indifference towards Orly’s uncertain fate shakes Daphna to the core.Matan, the younger 34 year-old son and “black sheep” of Orly’s late hus-band’s family, seems to be the only one who shares Daphna’s concerns, which pushes her to step beyond her professional boundaries. As her faith both in herself and in everybody sur-rounding her is called into question, Daphna will have to do something she has managed to avoid her entire adult life: put her trust in a man.
INTENTIONAs a young girl I grew up watching the great suspense thrillers of the 70’s. The plot usually centered around a a male investigator with a haunting past, or a detective challenging the system. I always identified with him.
In Highway 65 I ask: What happens to this investiga-tive genre when a woman is the crea-tive force behind it, on and off screen? Will the heroine
attempt to define herself in relation to the alpha male? Is there such a thing as an “alpha woman”?This is a female-led psychological thriller centering around one woman wanting to save another.Through Orly’s personality Daphna will connect with her own hidden aspects, which she had repressed. The savior will become the saved. Daphna will find the woman – the one she was hiding from herself.
Cette indifférence au sort incertain
d’Orly ébranle Daphna profondément.
This indifference
towards Orly’s uncertain fate shakes Daphna to the core.

SYNOPSISIn the outskirts of the Corozal town in Belize, two beautiful Belizean women Agnes (20) and Florence (27) Smith, flee silently into the jungle. They are forced to cross over the Río Hondo and into Mexico. But they are discovered by their pursuer, an Englishman, and only Agnes survives and runs away into the Mexican jungle. Some days later, some Mexican chi-cleros (gum work-ers) find Agnes lying unconscious and they take her to their camp. Her presence produces tension among the men, who have been working in the jungle for eight months. One by one they fall under Agnes’s spell, and mysterious fatalities ensue: one chiclero plummets from a zapote tree, one falls sick with malaria, and another is eaten by ants. Only one Mayan worker is suspicious about Agnes, he remembers an old Mayan legend, about a beautiful and evil woman who appears on jungle paths, seducing and causing the death of every man she finds.
INTENTIONThe film is set in the early 1920s on the Mexico-Belize border during the years of gum extraction in the region. Thousands of gum workers pen-etrated deep into the jungle for as long as eight months. The conditions
were terrible, and they faced great dangers: tropical ill-nesses, poisonous snakes and insects, falls from tall trees, and fights to the death between the men.
Tragic Jungle will take viewers deep into the Quintana Roo jungle and involve them intimately in the human conflicts that lie there. I want to por-tray the jungle as a living being har-assed by those men trying to steal its treasures; she takes revenge in different ways, with poisonous plants, swarms of mosquitos, snake bites, swiping jaguar paws, and with the presence of other mysterious creatures.

SYNOPSISAn old childless couple, Shiva and his loving wife Kashi, live in the quiet vil-lage of Nuwakot in Nepal. While on a pilgrimage to Devghat, Shiva receives a message from his dead father, which he interprets as a premonition of his own death. Once back home, it takes him quite an effort to confide the revelation to his wife. When he finally does, Kashi is devasted. As Shiva’s health deteroriates, Kashi tries everything to keep her husband healthy and alive.Having no heir to take over his ances-tral mill or to perform his funeral rites, Shiva must now prepare to resolve several problems in his household and the village before his time is up. But first, Shiva himself needs to understand the miraculous circle of life before submitting to death.
INTENTIONAcross the Rainbow Bridge is a story generated from a very personal space. To be born as a son in Nepal is regarded as a privilege: A male heir
helps branch out the family, and ensures the dead’s path to heaven. You’re given the privilege to pursue your dreams and aspirations, but you’re expected to sacrifice them for
your family if need be.Through Across the Rainbow Bridge, I want to test and expose these beliefs rooted in my subconscious. Dealing with the void and loneli-ness that an old childless couple is enveloped with, it dwells in the vacant corners of my childhood home and resonates in the rhythm of the farmers working on the fields. I want to pay homage to my grand-parents’ love and wisdom and honor my father who has done everything expected of him as a son.

SYNOPSISIn the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, religious fanatics, desperados, crimi-nals and fleeing animals are loose in the city.Miguel, an escaped prisoner, roams the ruins in search of the two women in his life: his girl-friend Andrea and his mother, Norma. As soon as he finds them, the reason for Miguel’s incar-ceration – and his sacrifice – becomes clear. He tries to convince them to leave the city with him before he is arrested. However, Norma is fixated on waiting for her estranged husband Luis and Andrea is entangled in rebellious acts paving the way for her to commit the unspeakable. As Miguel’s temporary release expires, his freedom and even his life are jeopardized. He must decide whether to stay on to persuade his loved ones or to leave town on his own before the next dis-astrous storm devours him and the only home he knows.
INTENTIONA terrible loss suffered by my city melded with my personal demons. Whether the Weather is Fine is a fable – narrating the absurdity of my own past and my hometown’s loss after Typhoon Haiyan through the story
of a son and his mother. A commu-nity that loses itself and the forgetting their humanity as they seek survival. As the city and the characters attempt to live they ines-
capably lose their sense of justice after the senselessness of having lost so much to nature – with no one to blame. The absurdity of religion and belief in myths and luck, and how these play a big part on how the characters act and respond.Whether the Weather is Fine immerses in the characters’ struggle for survival, sustained by the hope that they carry, and what is lost and gained.

SYNOPSISSorn is a 21-year old undocumented ethnic Shan refugee who works in a Chiang Mai spa, performing sexual favors for male and female clients. He supports the education of his little brother, Chan, but they face oppression, being ‘invisible’ to the government and unable to travel. To cope, Sorn pro-jects himself into the stories of his clients to dream of another life. When Sorn and his Shan friend unsuccessfully try to buy black market passports and the spa shuts down, Chan presses to return to the ‘doi’ (mountain), but Sorn strongly refuses, reminding him of their past, forced into the military. After a rela-tionship with Bee, a Shan girl, Sorn meets a French film director and fol-lows him to Paris to act in a film about his own life. One day, Chan abruptly returns to the Shan State, leav-ing Sorn shattered. His dream was to give his brother a future that he could not have, so despite transform-ing his projected fantasies into reality, he remains flightless, dreaming of his past with Chan.
INTENTIONWhat is it like to live without a dream? I developed Doi Boy from interviewing Shan refugees and will follow a real-istic approach using natural lighting and colors. I will cast real Shan ‘doi boys’, but surround them with well-
known Thai and for-eign actors as their clients. When Sorn dreams, the film layers the present reality, past memo-ries, and projected fantasies. Here the
film provides multiple interpretations to break from naturalism into a magic realism, using oversaturated colors and fluid movements. But this subject brings sadness because Thailand has moved toward a military government like that of the doi boys. I worry about my loved ones whose futures might become stuck like them. I cannot crit-icize my country directly so this film expresses these frustrations.

SYNOPSISSet in a poor coastal village by the name of Thom Rom, the film centers on three women, whose love lives are unusual and unique to their nature: Hau’s relationship to her husband is like a master and servant. Nhan cod-dles her husband like a mother and child, and Crazy Loan contends with Khang- the man who raped her when she was 12- as if a victim and culprit. In their own way the three women try to obtain their men’s love and attention, but can they finally get it?
INTENTIONWhat draws me to this story is the way the three leading characters love their men. The unique feature of the story is the contrast between the unsettling sentiments beneath and the pretentious peacefulness on the
surface. The char-acters in Glorious Ashes, especially the female charac-ters, persevere and try to overcome their hardships
silently and patiently.I am specifically drawn to this aban-doned-looking place that is the set-ting of the story, where life seems monotonously sluggish, even boring on the surface but deep down, it is stressful, confusing, and desperately painful.I chose a simple way to tell the story, from the visuals, to the camera movement, with modest acting. The story is told via an objective, calm, and even indifferent point of view, no matter the situation.
Trois femmes, dont les vies amoureuses sont
inhabituelles et uniques.
