AIRCRAFT & ENGINE NEWS CFM International completes design freeze for advanced LEAP-1B engine

CFM International completed design freeze for the advanced LEAP-1B engine, the exclu-sive powerplant for the Boeing 737 MAX, paving the way for the first full engine to test in mid-2014. This milestone is effectively the point at which the engine configuration is set, or frozen. This now allows CFM to finalize and release detailed engine design drawings, which it will do over the next six months. Parts manufacturing for the LEAP-1B engine will then ac-celerate through year end, lead-ing to build-up of the first engine in early 2014. The LEAP-1B is on schedule for CFM flight testing in 2015 and engine certification in 2016. The 737 MAX is sched-uled to enter service in 2017. Design freeze for the LEAP-1A / LEAP-1C variants was achieved in June 2012. The first full LEAP engine, the LEAP-1A, is currently being built and is on schedule to begin ground testing this fall.

cash. Total operating revenue was $370.4m, an increase of 22.9%, compared to first quarter 2012. Total revenue per available seat mile (“RASM”) for the first quarter 2013 was 11.85 cents, an increase of 1.7 percent compared to the first quarter 2012 driven by strength in operating yields. The calendar shift of Easter occurring in March this year compared to April in 2012 contributed to the strong first quarter 2013 results.

Embraer posts first quarter results

In the first quarter of 2013, Embraer delivered 17 commercial and 12 executive (8 light and 4 large) jets; representing a reduction of 4 com-mercial and 1 executive jets delivered in the same period of 2012, firm order backlog grew to $13.3bn, mainly as a result of an improve-ment in the order environment in Commercial aviation, as well as continued orders in the De-fense & Security segment. As a result of aircraft deliveries, coupled with revenues from the Company’s growing Defense & Security busi-ness, 1Q13 revenues reached $1,085.9m and gross margin was 22.2% for the period. EBIT and EBITDA margins were 3.6% and 9.2% re-spectively, in 1Q13, net income attributable to

Embraer and earnings per ADS totaled $30m and $0.1651, respectively, in 1Q13. Net cash position totaled $ 98.2m.

Aircastle announces first quarter 2013 results

Aircastle reported first quarter 2013 total rev-enues of $176.2m, an increase of $11.3m, or 7% versus the previous year. The increase re-flects $8.2m of higher lease rental and finance lease revenues, $4.2m of higher maintenance revenues associated with unscheduled lease terminations, and $4.3m of higher other rev-enues from interest on debt investments and additional revenue in connection with early lease terminations. These increases were par-tially offset by higher amortization of net lease premiums and incentives in the first quarter of 2013 of $5.5m, primarily due to two unsched-uled lease transitions in the first quarter of the prior year which led to comparatively lower am-ortization of lease incentives. Adjusted EBITDA for the first quarter was $168.6m, up $16.7m or 11% from the first quarter of 2012, driven primarily by higher lease rentals, maintenance and other revenues of $16.8m. Net income for the first quarter was $23.1m, down $9.5m, or

29%. Higher total revenues of $11.3m and $1.0m of higher gains from the sale of aircraft were offset by higher interest, net of $10.2m, higher depreciation of $5.4m and non-cash aircraft impairment charges of $6.2m. Ad-justed net income for the quarter was $27.4m, down $5.0m year over year, and reflects higher total revenues of $11.3m and $1.0m of higher gains from the sale of aircraft. These increases were offset by non-cash impairment charges of $6.2m, higher depreciation of $5.4m and higher adjusted interest expense, maintenance and other costs of $5.6m.

Go Airlines (GoAir), the Indian low-cost carrier, successfully went live on Ramco’s Aviation Maintenance & Engineering (M&E) suite of software for its 15 fleet across 21 base stations. The go-live marked Ramco’s web-based Series 5 M&E software and Ramco ePublications, seamlessly integrate with GoAir’s existing Flight Op-erations ARMS system and SAP Financials. Integration with ARMS has helped GoAir create journey logs automatically whereby users get to know of flight schedules in advance, thus enabling them in better aircraft planning. Ramco’s integration with SAP financials has helped in smooth flow of transactions between the two systems.

British Airways Engineering expands academy for 787 maintenance

British Airways Engineering, a leading Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) provider, announced that it is expanding its commercial Learning Academy to help customers as they bring Boe-ing 787s and Air-bus A380s into their fleets. The first such course targets engineers wishing to qual-ify in 787 B1/B2 m a i n t e n a n c e theory with the Trent 1000 en-gine. The first c o m m e r c i a l l y available course, which com-mences on June 3, 2013, has openings for 16 students and will run for 35 working days. The 787 training course and state-of-the-art classroom built to Boeing specifications is ideal for the commercial market, and draws heavily on British Airways Engineering’s extensive firsthand experience in aircraft maintenance.

Turboprop aircraft manufacturer ATR released that the newest ATR ‘-600 se-ries’ aircraft have just received their cer-tification from the FAA, the American Federal Aviation Administration. This certification, for both the ATR 42-600 and the ATR 72-600, will enable the entry into service of these new aircraft in countries requiring FAA rather than EASA (European Aviation Safety Agen-cy) certification. Thanks to the coop-eration between the two agencies, the FAA relied in part on the work done by EASA to grant certification to the two models of the ATR ‘-600 series’. All of the tests done by EASA, supplemented by the flights conducted by the FAA test pilots, were used to validate proper op-eration of the new systems and equip-ment installed onboard the aircraft, notably its new avionics suite: a new “glass cockpit” with 5 LCD screens, as well as new communication, navigation and monitoring systems, flight manage-ment system (FMS), automatic pilot, alert management and multi-purpose computer (MPC), which integrates air-craft maintenance and protection func-tions in particular.

Embraer Executive Jets received type certification for its large Legacy 650 air-craft from Indonesia’s Directorate Gen-eral of Civil Aviation on March 27, 2013, paving the way for Premiair to put the aircraft into service. “With the certifi-cation of the Legacy 650 in Indonesia, all in-service Embraer Executive Jets are now certified in the country,” said Jose Eduardo Costas, vice president, Sales – Asia Pacific, Embraer Executive Jets.
