The purpose of this veterinary course is to demonstrate and convey skills and knowledge in the use of surgical and therapy lasers for veterinarians and veterinary technicians. This will be accomplished using didactic instruction via PowerPoint. No previous knowledge of surgical lasers is required, and experienced practitioners will learn something new as well. Participants will be able to understand the basics of laser physics and laser-tissue interaction, laser safety, adjusting laser parameters (such as power , fluence, pulsing, hand speed) for selected procedures, and how surgical and photodynamic and photobiomodulation therapy lasers are utilized for general practice procedures, as well as in dermatological and dental applications. The course will cover single-pass full thickness skin incisions in veterinary patients, applications of surgical lasers in veterinary dermatology, soft-tissue dentistry and ENT procedures, ophthalmic procedures, orthopedic and oncologic procedures; laser surgery in aqueous environments, veterinary laser surgery of the perineum will also be reviewed. The attendees will receive an overview of low-dose non-surgical laser applications for selective destruction of cells or microbes (Photodynamic Therapy) and low-dose laser treatments for alleviation of pain and inflammation as well as promotion of tissue healing and regeneration (Photobiomodulation Therapy) in clinical dentistry.
