Grand Canyon

Pretty much everybody has heard of the Grand Canyon! The stunning landscape with its impressive size is a sightthat should not be missed if you are anywhere near it. Thenational park consists of 277 miles (446 km) of theColorado River and the erosional eects it has had on thesurrounding landscape.

The Grand Canyon is 18 miles (29 km) wide, and a mile (1,6 km) deep. It is possible to hike 9 miles (14,5 km)down the Bright Angel Trail all the way to the bottom.

Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam on the border between Arizona andNevada. Named after President Herbert Hoover anddedicated by President Franklin Roosevelt, the HooverDam is visited by nearly one million people each year.

Hoover Dam is a national historic landmark and the highest concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere, morethan 725 feet (220 m) above the Colorado River. It has 17generators that produce four billion kilowatts of electricitya year, which makes it one of the country’s largesthydroelectric power facilities.

Fountains of Bellagio

The Bellagio Fountains - a choreographed dance of water and light, set to 29 dierent operas, country or popmusical selections is presented at the quarter-mile lake infront of the Hotel Bellagio. Each show is dierent and lastsve to 10 minutes, with the water blasted hundreds offeet into the sky. Shows take place every 30 minutes from3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and every 15 minutes from 8 p.m. tomidnight. The best time to see the fountains is at nightand to stand on the street side of the lake. Crowds willstart to gather about ve minutes before each show so getthere a little early to get an unobstructed view.

Death Valley

Death Valley is a hot, low and dry desert valley within the Mojave desert, east of the Sierra Mountains. It holds therecord for the hottest July temperature ever recorded atFurnace Creek. On July 10, 1913, temperatures reached astunning 134 °F (56.7 °C).

Fremont Street Experience

The Fremont Street Experience is a highly successful attempt to draw the millions of visitors to Las Vegas backto the downtown area. Valley of Fire

Valley of Fire State Park is Nevada’s oldest and largest state park, dedicated in 1935. Walking

Walkways are always packed, day or night on the Las Vegas Strip. The streets are well-lit and there are manyelevated crossovers making it safe and easy to traversethe busy Las Vegas Blvd.

The Strip is divided into three sections. If you want to visit another casino in the same area, walking is certainly anoption. However, if you wish to navigate from the SouthStrip to the North Strip, you will need to take a taxi, privatecar or bus.

Things to do outside Las Vegas

There are over 100 dierent tours oered by a variety of tour companies in Las Vegas including sightseeing to theHoover Dam, Grand Canyon, Lake Mead and the ColoradoRiver, Red Rock and the Valley of Fire and Mt. One of the most exciting tours is the Grand Canyon Sunset Tour. Leave by helicopter, making a low-level ightover the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead and land at theGrand Canyon for a Champagne picnic at sunset beforeyou return over the lights of the Las Vegas Strip.Approximate cost $450 per person.

What to pack

Except for a special evening of dinner and dancing, visitorsto Las Vegas dress very casually. Be sure to bringcomfortable shoes. Ladies, don’t carry a large purse, it willonly get in the way when you are gambling. Bring a ”fannypack” to carry identication, credit cards and money. Don’tforget the swimming suits. Always carry properidentication with you, especially when gambling.

Getting the best deal

All hotels oer special rates on their websites. Many also oer two-for-one shows and free buets.

Player’s Cards

Every casino will oer a Player's Card. Cards are free and ittakes about 5 minutes to complete a short application.You will need a drivers’ license or another form ofidentication.

Every time you play a slot machine, insert the card into the appropriate slot and it will track the amount of play.The longer you play, the more credits you will receive. Youcan also get credit on your card for table games. Simplyhand the card to the Dealer, and they will add creditsdepending on the amount you play.

These credits accumulate and can be used for small gifts, free meals and even free nights. Some cards covermultiple casinos and you can use it at any venue listed onthe card. Even if you are only playing penny slots, thesecredits add up. Don’t worry if you lose your card– all theinformation is in their computers, and they will gladly issueyou a new card at no charge.


Arriving at the hotel

Even though most hotel websites state that check-in is at 3 p.m., you can generally check in at any time, as long asrooms are available. There are many ights arriving in themorning and early afternoon, and the hotels try their bestto accommodate their guests.

Tickets Tonight is located at the giant Coca Cola Bottle onthe Las Vegas Strip, next to MGM Grand and across fromNew York and sells same-day show tickets for half price.Open from noon to 9 p.m., they accept credit cards orcash, and all purchases must be made in person–notelephone orders are accepted. The chances of nding theheadlining performers, such as Bette Midler or Elton Johnare not very good, but there are many terric shows thatmay be available.

Warnings/Tourist Traps

Pornography Peddlers: As you walk along the Strip, there are people who will try to hand you cards or tacky leaets.Do not accept anything from them, just keep walking.

Time Share Sales: Outside casinos on the Strip, there will be nicely-dressed men or women with one mission–to gettourists to give up a half day of their vacation to listen to atime share sales pitch. They will oer free show tickets ordinner tickets. Their rst question is always “How long willyou be in Vegas?” A good response is to say that you areleaving in just a few hours, and they immediately leave youalone.
