LaRue County Gets 1st Hybrid Bus in Kentucky
LaRue County became the first district in Kentucky
to receive a hybrid electric school bus on July 27,
2010. The school board approved the grant
application written by Director of Transportation
and Maintenance Phil Fulkerson in January, and the
district received notification from the state the
grant was awarded last spring .
The advantages of the hybrid bus include: increased
fuel economy (from approximately 7.5 to 12 mpg),
decreased brake ware, decreased component wear,
lower carbon dioxide emissions, and an overall
GREEN effort. “The LaRue County Schools are
committed to doing our part to be environmentally
conscious”, commented Superintendent Sam Sanders.
The school district is also working on an energy conservation project. More information about the energy project
will appear in future issues of The Bridge.
Technology Tip of the Month
If you have upgraded from an older version of Office to Microsoft Office 2007 or Office 2010, you have noticed that
many features are no longer located in the same place. A new toolbar at the top of all the Office applications has
been replaced with a “Ribbon.” The new ribbon look was designed to help make things easier to find. If you were
used to office 2003 and comfortable with the location of all the features you used, the new ribbon made things
harder to find. There is a website Guides to the Ribbon (http://office.microsoft.com/en‐us/training/guides‐to‐the‐ribbon‐use‐
office‐2003‐menus‐to‐learn‐the‐office‐2007‐user‐interface‐HA010229584.aspx) that has an interactive guide that shows you
where the new feature is. A window will pop up and it will look just like the 2003 version of the application. Take
the steps you would normally do in Office 2003 and then it will show you the new location in Office 2007.

Students, Parents, and Teachers are Preparing for the 21st Century Learning Initiative
The LaRue County High School will soon be receiving the highly
anticipated laptops that are needed for the 21st Century Learning
Initiative. Teachers, students, and parents are all excited about
the great opportunities this learning initiative will bring to LaRue
County students and the community. There will be a 1 hour
parent laptop orientation required for each grade level of
parents. A parent or guardian must attend the orientation before a laptop will be issued to their child. Laptops
will be handed out during a Kick Off celebration on Saturday October 16, 2010. Parents will need to be present in
order for the laptop to be issued. Please stop by for the celebration and learn more about the laptops, rules, and
internet safety. More detailed information about the Kick Off celebration will be released soon. The dates for the
laptop orientation are:
Monday September 13th at 6:00 – Freshman Class Parents
Tuesday September 14th at 6:00 – Sophomore Class Parents
Monday September 20th at 6:00 – Junior Class Parents
Tuesday September 21st at 6:00 – Senior Class Parents
If parents are unable to attend the regularly scheduled orientations, make up sessions will be held on Thursday
September 23rd at 8:00 a.m. and again at 7:00 p.m.
An Internet Safety Training will also be required for all high school students. The training will be provided during
the school day by the Attorney General’s office on September 9th. A special Parent session will be made available
that night on September 9th at 6:00 p.m. for any parent interested in learning more about being safe while using
the internet. We highly recommend that parents attend this session.
Teachers participated in two days of intensive
training with the DELL team in early August.
Training will continue in an ongoing manner as
part of the LCHS activities on early release
Fridays. Much of the training will be facilitated by
a team of LCHS teachers who has volunteered to
be leaders in this area. They are receiving
additional training and then working with the rest
of the teachers in small groups.

LCHS Principal Paul Mullins Selected 2010 KASA Administrator of the Year
Paul Mullins was honored this past July 21, 2010 at
the Kentucky Association of School Administrators
Summer Conference in Louisville when he was
awarded the 2010 KASA School Administrator of
the Year. Superintendent Sam Sanders nominated
Principal Mullins because LaRue County High School
has emerged as one of the premiere high schools in
the state under Mullins leadership. According to
Sanders, “Paul was very instrumental in
spearheading the laptop learning initiative. He is
very student focused, and does what he believes
will help our students succeed.”
Board Approves Compensating Tax Rate
For the third year in a row the LaRue County School Board has “held the line” on taxes. “When
you consider our property tax rate was 45.6 in 2007‐08 and the school board approved the 45.4
rate at the last meeting, I think it sends a strong message the school district is doing their part
trying to keep expenses down for local taxpayers”, said Superintendent Sam Sanders. “The
school board even approved a rate lower than the compensating rate last year in an effort
help.” LaRue County continues to have one of the lowest tax rates in the area. School Board
Member Dick Greenwell commented, “When you consider all the success our school system
and students are experiencing, LaRue County taxpayers are getting a very good value for their
dollar – our scores are at the top in area and our tax rates are toward the bottom.”

LaRue County High ACT Scores, Rank on the Rise
According to the ACT statewide results released on August 12, LaRue County High School is continuing its trend of academic growth. Results show LCHS students gained 1.0 in average composite ACT score based on the scale of 0 to 36. The greatest gains were noted in English and Reading where students gained 1.4. Mathematics improved 1.0 and Science held steady. The highest area was Reading at an average score of 19.9.
Scores for LaRue are ahead of state average in all areas tested, and LCHS is gaining ground in statewide rankings. Of the 228 high schools in Kentucky, the average composite score of 19.4 ranks LaRue in a tie for 46th place—that’s the top 20% of all Kentucky high schools. This ranking is up from 79th in 2009. The average composite of 19.4 is 0.9 ahead of the state average of 18.5. LCHS also fared well in comparison to local high schools, coming in 3rd among the twenty high schools in our area.
Results are based on the March 2010 ACT administration required of all juniors in the state of Kentucky. This is the third year that Kentucky has required all juniors to participate. The ACT is given under standard ACT testing conditions, but during the school day rather than on a Saturday. There is a make‐up date as well for those who are absent for the regular administration. The March administration is free of charge for Kentucky juniors.

Kentucky State Beta Leadership Conference
The fourth annual Kentucky Junior Beta Leadership
Conference selected Hodgenville, Kentucky as the
home site for the 2010‐11 state leadership
conference. Twenty‐one students from LaRue
County Middle joined students from across the state
last Thursday at First Baptist Church in Hodgenville.
The National Beta Club has been encouraging and developing
leadership skills in America’s youth since 1934. The ability to
lead creates the condition that enables others to be as
productive and successful as they can be. One who is able to
lead is able to accomplish extraordinary things by employing
and maximizing their own strengths.
The conference was led by Donnie Thurman. Mr. Thurman is a member of the
staff of Tomorrow’s America Foundation. He is also a director of the annual
Broyhill Leadership Conference in North Carolina. The Broyhill Leadership
Conference is considered one of the premier leadership training camps for
young people in America.
Students at the Kentucky conference learned to set goals, become team players,
communicate effectively, and understand the impact of a positive mental
attitude. Students were engaged in a host of activities that cultivated positive
relationships and addressed the impact of peer pressure. The use of enthusiasm
and humor kept students involved in the theme of the day.
LaRue County Middle sixth graders also participated in a mini workshop with Mr.
Thurman on Wednesday of last week before the state conference. He also
spoke to the seventh grade class on the importance of being motivated to
always do your best in life. Ms. Teresa Lee serves as the sponsor for the LaRue
County Middle School Beta Club.

HES Kindergarten Launch
A new year brings many new little faces to the building.
On August 2nd, HES “launched” a new group of
Kindergarteners into their new school. Kindergarten
Launch was established to help with the transition from
Mom, caregiver/daycare to school. Families are greeted
by the Family Resource Center Coordinator and the
child’s picture is taken for their teacher. After everyone
arrives, Mrs. Cecil welcomes everyone and introduces
the staff. The parents then leave and the children go to
their classroom with his or her teacher and do some fun
activities that help them to get comfortable with the class and school. For the first time this
year, they went on a short bus ride in the parking lot and Mr. Ronald Whitlock talked to them
about bus safety. For several, it helped alleviate the fear of that “BIG YELLOW THING”. In fact,
when some of the parents returned to pick their child up, some parents were told by their child
that they “now want to ride the bus to school” instead of mom bringing them to school.
FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER’S “WEE TIME” PROGRAM
Both the Hodgenville & ALES Family Resource Center’s offer a
free program each Thursday from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m., for children
beginning at age 2. Things that are covered are letters, numbers,
alphabet, shapes and colors as well as lots of cutting and
coloring. Each week the child and caregiver do a craft together,
sing songs and cover the topics for that week in a fun, loving and
educational environment. Each week, sheets are sent home for
the child to work on and books can be checked out to encourage
reading with the child. Parents are also given educational
material to take home and read. To get a schedule or more
information on this free program, please contact HES Family
Resource Coordinator, Melissa Pearman at 358‐3506 or ALES
Family Resource Coordinator, Machelle Durham, 358‐4112.

Math in Focus for HES Kindergartners
The elementary students in LaRue County have a new math series. Math in Focus from Singapore Math is geared
to the new state standards and mastery teaching. The Kindergarten students in Mrs. Henderson’s class have been
practicing matching and sorting with manipulatives. We have sorted by color, shape, and size. This activity
teaches children to differentiate between objects and decide why they belong in specific groups.
Teambuilding with Mrs. Spratt
Teambuilding is an important factor in any
environment, its focus is to specialize in bringing out
the best in a team to ensure self‐development,
positive communication, leadership skills and the
ability to work closely together as a team to
problem solve. Mrs. Tiffany Spratt and Ms. Susan
teach the student’s the value of working together!
In order to help everyone learn at higher levels
teamwork is a vital part of our daily structure.

Hynes, Anna Webb, and Maddy Poirier.
To be selected, the students completed a workshop on job
applications, interviews, references, and evaluations. Each
student was then interviewed for their position and
references checked. Micro students will be evaluated on job performance prior to Christmas break and then a new
job cycle begins. Any intermediate student may apply for the Spring Microsociety positions. For more information
on Microsociety, contact Kathy Ross, micro sponsor at ALES.
DAILY 5 in Kindergarten at ALES
Kindergarten at Abraham Lincoln has really gotten off to a
great start! Our Kindergarteners are not only learning all about
the rules and procedures of school, but they are also learning the
importance of reading and writing. This year our school is
implementing The Daily 5 school wide. The Daily 5 consists of
several components which include; Read to Self, Read to
Someone, Listen to
Reading, Word
Work, and Work
on Writing. The
purpose of The Daily 5 is to foster literacy independence in the elementary
grades (Boushey & Mouser, 2006). As you may guess, there will be a lot of
modeling before Kindergarteners will be independent. They are working on
building their stamina, which is how long they can actually sit and “Read to
Someone” and “Read to Self”. All 5 classrooms have launched at least one of
the five components. One of the first and very important lessons that we
taught was the three ways to read a book. These are: reading the pictures,
reading the words, and retelling the story. Students are picking this up and
doing great! If asked, any K student would probably be able to tell at least one way to read a book! They are enjoying their time
to “read to someone” and “read to self”. Remember, reading the pictures is the first step before they read the words. So…ALL
kids are reading already!
September 1, 2010 [THE LARUE COUNTY BRIDGE]
EAGER READERS!
A.L.E.S. 3rd graders are broadening their appreciation for
reading. They are engaged in their own learning and
becoming more and more motivated to read and write.
Choice is highly motivational and puts the students in
charge of their learning. That is why you will see them
packing their personal book boxes or bags around the
school. In their boxes, they have some “good fit books”
they have chosen from the classroom library or the school
library, along with their reading and writing journals. This
is an organizational tool that will help them to always be prepared to discuss, write about a good book, or just sit
down and read.
Mrs. Canter, Mrs. Cottrell, Mrs. Flanders and Mrs. Ray are very proud of their voracious readers!
Volunteers at ALES
Approximately 75 volunteers attended the first two
volunteer workshops conducted at ALES by Community
Educator Vicki Devers in early August. Confidentiality,
expectations, and a variety of opportunities were
covered during the workshop.
Last year, ALES recorded 3,159 hours of volunteer work
and Rhonda Cundiff was honored at the Kentucky
School Volunteer Organization Coalition Recipient of the
Year.

Learning to use the SmartBoard for Learning Center planning
Preschool students began the school year
learning to use the SmartBoard to plan their
Learning Center activity. Students participate in
Learning Centers to explore Literacy and Math
concepts. Learning Centers provide the preschool
student meaningful opportunities to learn
through exploring. Preschoolers participated in
the Kissing Hand activity in which we read the
story, talked about separating from family to
come to school, and created a keepsake hand
print to share with their family the first week of
school. We are looking forward to a fun and
exciting year of learning as we prepare students
to enter kindergarten.

Dollar, and Pamida. Contributions come from civic clubs, religious groups, businesses, individuals, Memorial gifts, bequests in wills, and an
annual fund drive at each LaRue County school. Collected from LaRue Countians, for the benefit of LaRue children, and spent at LaRue County
