“Godfather of Modern Skateboarding”
Rodney Mullen
Rodney Mullen is a professional skateboarder. He is o<en referred to as “The Godfather of Modern Skateboarding.” This is due to his innova?ve abili?es ska?ng and an unmatched level of passion and enthusiasm for his sport.
Rodney gives a TED Talk about the effects of passion and enthusiasm on crea?vity and the benefits of being able to re-‐invent yourself.
A collec?on of previous video parts opens the presenta?on. Rodney enters and jokes
“This is what I did with my life.”
During the presenta?on, Rodney uses many different photos from
throughout his career. He also uses humor and storytelling to maintain
the audience’s engagement.
Dynamism Ra?ng: 4 In terms of enthusiasm and passion for the subject, it may be hard to find someone beOer. He is a bit scaOer brained, however, going off on tangents only mildly related to his presenta?on.
Rodney makes liberal use of storytelling and humor and appears to enjoy giving the talk.
Rodney displays an enormous level of passion and enthusiasm throughout his talk. He uses images and videos as tools to explain some of his points.
VS
Sir Ken Robinson is hands down the beOer speaker. He is completely at ease giving his presenta?on. He uses humor and storytelling very effec?vely, both in keeping his audience amused and paying aOen?on and making himself relatable to them. He is also able to sneak key points into the storytelling, geSng his message across without really having to say it. He maintains an even flow throughout, with no lulls or periods of faster talking. He stays on topic for the whole talk, as well.
VS
Rodney Mullen’s talk was not that bad for someone who rarely, if ever, does this type of thing. Like Sir Ken Robinson, Rodney was funny and used stories of his own to help his talk along. He also showed a level of enthusiasm and passion I have not seen before. I found it to be infec?ous. On the other hand, he veered off topic easily, by either distrac?ng himself with some of his stories or geSng almost too excited over some of the tricks. He also would start to talk faster the more excited he got. A lot of the ?me he appeared to be looking at the floor. Lastly, his appearance is a bit shabby, but, he is a professional skateboarder, so you probably shouldn’t expect much more.
Things I Learned:
Stay focused-‐ It is hard for the audience to follow when going off topic.
Speak slowly-‐ Again, it is easy for the audience to become lost when speaking
too fast.
Things I Learned:
Be passionate-‐ If you are excited about your speech, chances are the audience will be too.
Use humor and relatable stories-‐ People are more likely to pay aOen?on if they like you/relate to you.
Things I Learned:
Have fun-‐ Like the humor/stories, people will have fun listening to you, if you have fun talking to them.
Things You Should Know Stay on Topic
Speak slowly and clearly Look at your audience
Be passionate about the topic Be knowledgeable about the topic
Use humor and stories Maintain a certain pace
