Operations Management: Strategy and Analysis, Reading, Mass: Addison-Wesley Publishers, 1987, 905 pp. (with L.J. Krajewski)

I wrote Chapters 1,2,4,5,7,8,9,10,12,14,and 20 of the text and was responsible for preparing the 589-page Lecture Notes and Transparency Masters to accompany the book. I co-authored the 430-page Instructor's Resource Guide which provided sample course outlines, solutions to end-of-chapter problems, a test bank, teaching notes, and cases.

Operations Management: Strategy and Analysis, Second Edition, Reading, Mass: Addison-Wesley Publishers, 1990, 919 pp. (with L.J. Krajewski)

This second edition was a major revision and I wrote Chapters 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 15, and 20). We significantly expanded the supplementary material, including a 332-page Test Item File, 415-page Solutions Manual, 518-page Transparency Manual, and 266-page Instructor's Manual.

The third edition was a significant revision and I wrote Chapters 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, and 20). We significantly updated the supplementary material, including a 398-page Test Item File, 390-page Solutions Manual, 649-page Transparency Manual, and 307-page Instructor's Manual. A Korean language edition, translated by Dr. Seung-Kyu Rhee (KAIST) and Professor Seung Gyu Bael (Soonchunhyang University) was published in 1994.

This fourth edition was still another significant revision. I wrote Chapters 1, 3, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13; Supplements A, B, G, H, and I; and Appendix 1). We significantly updated the supplements and ancillaries, including a 445-page Test Item File, 720-page Transparency Manual, and 488-page Instructor's Manual. Others prepared the 420-page Solutions Manual, 347-page Study Guide, CMOM computer package, Power Point presentation, and video library. A Korean language edition, translated by Dr. Seung-Kyu Rhee (KAIST) and Professor Seung Gyu Bael (Soonchunhyang University) was published in 1997.

Operations Management: Strategy and Analysis, Fifth Edition, Reading, Mass: Addison Wesley Longman Publishers, 1999, 861 pp. (with L.J. Krajewski)

This fifth edition was another significant revision, this time with an emphasis on technology enhancement. A new chapter was written on technology management, and extensive internet, computer software, and online software libraries. Over 150 computer programs have been created for the OM Software package, either as computerized tutors, verifiers, or solvers. I wrote Chapters 1, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, and 14; Supplement A; and Appendix 1). We updated the supplements and ancillaries, including a 720-page Transparency Manual, and 488-page Instructor's Manual. The Instructor’s Manual includes a set of Applications, complete with supporting transparency masters, for in-class exercises. Others prepared the 420-page Solutions Manual, 445-page Test Item File, Power Point presentation, and an expanded video library. A Spanish language edition was also published.

"Judgmental Adjustment of Statistical Forecasts," Principles of Forecasting: A Handbook for Researchers and Practitioneers, J. Scott Armstrong (ed.), Norwell, MA: Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2001. (with Nada Sanders) Operations Management: Strategy and Analysis, Sixth Edition, Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall, inc. 2002, 875 pp. (with L.J. Krajewski)

This sixth edition places a new emphasis on processes, the fundamental unit of work in all organizations. This unifying theme opens up the topics in operations to all students, regardless of their majors or career paths. We significantly upgraded the chapters on managing technology, incorporating the latest developments in e-commerce and enterprise resource planning. Supply-chain management, service processes, cross-functional perspectives, and resource planning have all been strengthened. A CD-ROM is packaged free with each new copy of the text, which not only includes virtual text material, but also the new OM Explorer (prepared especially for the book), Extend simulation, Microsoft Project and SmartDraw computer software packages. The MyPHLIP web site for the text provides interesting Internet activities, virtual tours, current articles, readiness tests, computer exercises, and links to online software libraries. The Course Compass web site provides course management tools, interactive study guide, and distance learning capabilities. Several new features include definitions in the margins, CD icons indicating where our computer software can be applied, and URLs for the company examples. Ancillaries include new videos, the JIT program for customized publishing, and an interactive study guide.

Foundations in Operations Management, Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall, Inc., 2003. (with L.J. Krajewski)

This new soft-back abridged book addresses the growing demand in operations management for a brief book that still retains the rich set of pedagogical features of the 6th edition. It is suitable for the MBA market because of its managerial perspective and strong coverage of process management. It is also suitable for

undergraduates because it provides the pedagogical structure (clear explanations, step-by-step examples of quantitative techniques, numerous solver problems and homework problems) that undergraduates need.

Operations Management: Processes and Value Chains, Seventh Edition, Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall, Inc. 2005, 875 pp. (with L.J. Krajewski)

The seventh edition was a complete redesign of the general outline and approach of the first six editions. It is a revision that is really a revision⎯providing readers with something really new and topical. While many improvements are made, the three most important new thrusts are:

Processes and Value Chains. While the seventh edition maintains its perspective on the big picture and the strategic importance of operations, it shifts its overall approach to a process orientation. This new paradigm starts at the level of a process and then transitions to the level of value chains, which involve the linkages of processes. The term “value chain” applies equally well to non-manufacturing and manufacturing processes. It also is finding widespread usage in practice.

Services. While the overall approach of the seventh edition focuses on processes, a second major emphasis is the coverage of service processes. We significantly increased the emphasis on service operations and the number of non-manufacturing examples and applications. These service process examples are closer to the sort of processes that students will encounter in their jobs after graduation, instead of examples such as making hamburgers. Students can relate with our examples, and can envision future employment opportunities.

All Majors. Processes are the fundamental unit of work in all organizations. This unifying theme opens up operations management to all students, regardless of their majors or career paths. It creates an excellent “buy-in” for a course in operations management, because students understand that processes underlie activities throughout any organization, not just in one functional area or department.
