PRIME stands for PoweRline Intelligent Metering Evolution:

It is a PLC protocol used for Smart Grid and Smart Metering

mainly to support massive meter reading & management.

It was designed as a future-proof solution:

State-of-the-art.

Economies of scale (open, interoperable).

PRIME is a Telecommunication Standard: Annex B of ITU G.9955 & 9956.

PRIME is now a specification under the umbrella of the PRIME Alliance registered as a Belgian non-profit association(http://www.prime-alliance.org/), a group of companies working together to develop PRIME interoperable solutions.
