DISCOVERING DEWEY PART V On to Dewey Decimal Classification 300 class, a huge chunk of the scheme into which encompasses many subjects. The social sciences are diverse: topics as varied as transportation, law and etiquette are all classified under the broad umbrella of this class. In some instances, it would seem that not all subjects we find here are actually best suited here. For example wedding customs at 392.5 seems light years away in essence from ground transportation at 388 but they are separated by only 4 numbers in the scheme. Law, at 340 is provided for adequately for public libraries but specialist law libraries would find it too limited for the vast array of resources found in such collections. Here are the ten divisions of the 300 class:

• 300 – Social sciences.

• 310 – Collections of general statistics.

• 320 – Political science.

• 330 – Economics.

• 340 – Law

• 350 – Public administration & military science.

• 360 – Social problems & services.

• 370 – Education.

• 380 – Commerce, communications, transportation.

• 390 – Customs, etiquette, folklore.

Tama Wise Evening Team Supervisor

I was born in Whangarei, although I lived in a tiny place called Tutukaka, known mostly for its deep sea fishing. I lived in that area for around 18 years before I went down to Hamil-ton to study Law and Maori Language. I previously worked in Puke Ariki (New Plym-outh) Library in the teens and children's de-partment. Previous to that, I've worked in a flurry of teams and positions in Auckland City Libraries, including Community Libraries, the

Outreach Team, Music, Fiction, Mobile library, and Library shop! All in all, I've been in libraries now for around five years. Libraries let me help people, while still involving one of my big passions in life, being books! Little known fact about me, I fenced for about a year or so in Auckland (with foils, rather than number 8 wires). I'm also an avid reader (fortunate, working in a library), and am a published short story writer, in Huia Short Stories 2007. I am currently putting the final edits on a full length teen novel. I'm also a rather outspoken critic of film and television.

Ellie Marshall Teens Librarian I was born in County Durham, England - which is in the north east for anybody who doesn't know. I was brought up a little further north of County Durham, in Northumberland which is along the north east coast. I will have been in New Zealand for a year at the end of August. Before I worked in the library I worked in re-tail, and have lots of cus-tomer service experi-ence. When I'm not at work I like to do anything artistic and creative. I like to paint, draw, write, and anything crafty like card making. I also love to cook.

Sure to raise a few laughs is this handy-sized book from Nick Theobald and Paora Walker, “Instant Maori”. Full of hundreds of useful and not-so-useful (but funny) phrases. Conveniently grouped in subjects touching on the time, seasons, gone fishing, on the phone, romance , taxi chit-chat plus many more situations you may happen to find yourself in. Maori-English phonetics included after each phrase. From the romance section: Can I buy you a drink? Pai ana ki a koe mehemea ka hook inu au mau? No, but can I have the money instead? Kaore, engari pehea ke whiwhi I te moni? Instant Maori can be found upstairs in the Don Stafford Room 499.4428z THEO

A Dictionary of New Zealand Sign Language 419.03z DIC. It was as recent as the 1990s when sign language was finally recognized after a century of oralist teaching where the deaf were expected to learn to speak and lip-read. De-scribed as a “work-in-progress” the Dictionary offers more than 4000 signs and illustrations. There is a lending copy as well as a NOT FOR LOAN reference copy.

Here are just some examples of commonly mispronounced place names in New Zealand, according to the authors of this book.

The Library is pleased to be in receipt of a very comprehensive Rotorua family history, that of the Lee family. The book which was donated to the library recently is a compilation of photographs, maps, certificates, family letters, charts and diagrams, being very well documented and presented. It would be of interest to many locals who were familiar with Lee Brothers’ Joinery Ltd on Lake Road, had connections with any of the many descendents or for those interested in Rotorua history. The library holds two lending copies of The Lee Family History 1839 – 2008 available from the Don Stafford Room.

Montana Poetry Day Montana Poetry Day Montana Poetry Day Montana Poetry Day ---- Haiku Haiku Haiku Haiku

Leading up to Montana Poetry Day on Friday 18th July, we’d like to invite people to hand in their own, original HAIKU for our display. Haiku is a poetic form and a type of poetry from the Japanese culture. It combines form, content, and language in a meaningful, yet compact form. Many themes include nature, feelings, or experiences often using simple words and grammar. The most common form for Haiku is three short lines. The first line usually contains five (5) syllables, the second line seven (7) syllables, and the third line contains five (5) syllables. A Haiku doesn't rhyme and will "paint" a mental image in the reader's mind. This is the challenge of Haiku - to put the poem's meaning and imagery in the reader's mind in only 17 syllables over just three (3) lines of poetry! Haiku can be funny or somber, about international issues or everyday occurrences. Have some fun and unleash your poetic mind ! You can hand in your Haiku at the library, on the Mobile Bus or email to [email protected].

The Girl with No Shadow. Joanne Harris has written a sequel to her bestseller, “Chocolat” In her own inimitable style, she continues the story of Vianne Rocher, now living in Paris with her daughters, cloaked in a new identity. At the beginning Vianne appears leached of colour, existing in a drab and humourless world with no sparks of magic, no joy. Her adolescent daughter is rebellious and cannot understand the need for anonymity. Into the scene comes the charming, enigmatic and devious Zozie de l’Alba and everything changes. If you enjoyed “Chocolat”, the sequel is a must. Also published under the title “The Lollypop shoes” and available in Large Print. JG
