“I am the author of the MichelThomas courses to learn spokenMandarin. Innovative approachesto language teaching is one of mypassions. So I am always on the

lookout for texts and resources tosupport me in my journey.

I have used most of the Chinesegrammars out there. This is farand away the best. The entireseries is outstanding. Why?Because it's totally practical

without getting stuck ingrammatical obscurities. It reflects

the actual, contemporary use ofthe language as it is used byordinary, educated speakers.

The first half of the book reviewsall aspects of the grammar in a

user-friendly way. The second halfof the volume deals with how toexpress anything you could wishto say in contemporary Chinese

using the patterns of the languageas would a native speaker.

Over the time I spent designingcutting edge courses for English (and now also French) speakersto really learn to speak Mandarinin the least amount of time this

book was one of my mostvaluable resources. I cannot

recommend it enough.

What I have found is that Icontinue to return to Modern

Chinese Grammar year after yearand am always happily surprised

with its simple explanation ofpotentially complex topics.

The Khoesan LanguagesEdited by Rainer Vossen, University of Frankfurt,Germany

According to a widely accepted hypothesis, the Khoesanlanguages represent the smallest of the four languagefamilies in Africa, geographically distributed mainly inBotswana and Namibia. Today, only forty or so Khoesanlanguages may still exist, with about 120,000 nativespeakers. In other words, most Khoesan languages werealready extinct before a sound scholarly interest in themcould begin to develop. This volume presents descriptive, typological, historico-comparative and socio-linguisticmaterial on Khoesan, much of it drawn from the author’sown field work.

The concern for the fast-disappearing language stocks ofthe world has arisen particularly in the past decade, as aresult of the impact of globalization. This book appearsas an answer to a felt need: to catalogue and describethose languages, making up the vast majority of theworld’s six thousand or more distinct tongues, which arein danger of disappearing within the next few decades.

The Encyclopedia of the World’s Endangered Languagesrepresents an effort to conserve all the information wehave about languages threatened with extinction, aneffort that is not only imperative but a race againsttime. It will be a necessary addition to all academiclinguistics collections and will be a useful resource for a range of readers with an interest in developmentstudies, cultural heritage and international affairs.
