Package Synopsis

This package focuses on processes and strategies that teachers can use to teach comprehension skills in viewing, listening, reading and related domains. The information is informed by current evidence and personal experience as to what works and what does not. There are many related theoretical documents, resources that are located on the accompanying thumb drive.

Central to the package is a character called Comp Monitor who is a puppet that provides the motivational hook for children to engage in tasks and activities. He is a tool as opposed to a toy and should be used as a scaffold or support for students as they engage in learning strategies to enhance their comprehension.

The package includes visual icons that relate to the underpinning cognitive processes associated with the critical comprehension strategies. These strategies should not be viewed as a ‘grab bag’ of ideas. Strategies only produce powerful outcomes when they are carefully selected and implemented based on the identified needs of children and in the context of carefully sequenced teaching processes. The package details concrete lessons that introduce skills and additional literacy based lessons.

The resources on the thumb drive include copyright free graphics, lessons ideas and posters.

Professional Development

Centrally located PDTo maximise the benefits of the package key people need to complete a professional learning series. The service will support targeted staff who attend the series as they implement ideas and complete training sessions for their school (train the trainer model).

There are course costs associated with the training of teachers and this includes a complete copy of all the critical resources required for the implementation of this package. Additional items can be purchased. School based PDAnother option is that the series is run at a local school site for individual or groups of schools. The cost would be negotiated. Country schools can contact our service and we will negotiate options and costs.

Professional Development ContentSession 1 (3 hours)Introductory session on background theory and package overview. Listening and Attending using the ‘Whole Body Listening’ strategy. Comprehension Monitoring and introducing ‘Click, Clunk, Stop and Fix’ strategy to engage students and Visualising.

Costing$480+gst for the I Get it’ package. This includes a complete copy of all the critical resources required for implementation (resource file,1 puppet, 11 posters, 5 big books and a 4gb thumb drive full of ideas, lesson plans and teaching resources, all copyright free).
