ELA FIELD TRIP: JOURNALISM

What: A group tour of KSNV news 3 NBC station in Las Vegas, NV

When: Friday, September 27, 2019 from 10:30 am -12:30

Where: 1500 Foremaster Lane, Las Vegas, NV 89101. After the tour, we will have lunch at a nearby park

Who: 8th grade students (20), and a teacher (Charity Marshall). We can only have 20 students. First come, first serve, so sign up soon!!

Details: They have a small lobby, so they kindly ask that guests do not arrive more than 15 minutes early. Guest parking is limited with most of the parking available on the street. Jen Rochford and/or Kacie Hackley will lead the tour.

USING THE ACE METHOD

• How to answer a short answer or essay question- use the ACE method

WHAT IS A CLAIM?

• Look at the word in context.

• This person claims he knows you.

• So, you claim you don’t know what happened to my skateboard?

• He claims to be great at basketball.

• In your own words, what is a claim?

WHAT IS A CITATION?

• To cite means to point to something specific in the text.

• A quotation

• An example

• An event

Introduces citation

Find the claim statement in the first example.

Find two examples of citations.

Find two examples of great explanations.

Indicates an explanation.

Now, write one of the missing claim statements!

HOW TO WRITE SHORT ANSWER RESPONSES

• Read the selection the question is asking about at least 2 times

• Read it out loud so that the words stay in your mind

• If it is a longer reading, such as a short story, skim the reading for important words and details

• Decide what details and quotes you are going to use from the reading to support your answer

• Type your response in a word processor that has spell check, such as Microsoft word

• Write at least 3-5 sentences. Write 1 sentence for each point that the question is worth.

• 4 points= at least 4 sentences (in 1 paragraph)

• 12 points = at least 12 sentences (in 3 paragraphs)

• According to the story, what does the narrator fear? Use story details, including the narrator’s own words, to explain.

INDEPENDENT READING SELECTION• YOU NEED TO HAVE AN INDEPENDENT READING SELECTION!!!!

• It can be any book of your choice that you are reading for fun throughout the semester.

• Use your Independent Reading selection to answer the quiz and test questions in each unit about the impact of the book

• You need to give the title and author of the book

• Write 4 sentences or more to answer the questions about your independent reading on quizzes and tests.

UNIT 2 PORTFOLIO: PERSONAL NARRATIVE ESSAY

● Personal Narratives allow you to share your life with others and vicariously experience the things that happen around you. Your job as a writer is to put the reader in the midst of the action letting him or her live through an experience.

ASSIGNMENT: WRITE A STORY OR ACCOUNT OF AN EVENT YOU EXPERIENCED.

● Audience: Your teacher, your classmates, your friends or your family ● One single emotional experience (5-10 minutes of time) ● Use logical ordering of events with a beginning, middle, and end ● Must be written in the first person point-of-view (I, we, me) ● Purposeful dialogue is included that shows action and not idle conversation ● Leaves the reader with a lesson or emotional connection ● Includes lively, active verbs

● Do not give me your entire life story from birth to 8th grade!!!

○ Stages of Grief- Describe when you experienced a difficult loss in your life.

○ Someone Special- Write about someone important in your life, whether that is a friend, a family member, a teacher/mentor, or someone you have met virtually.

○ Tough Times- Think about an ongoing experience you’ve had to endure, and write about your coping mechanisms.

○ Blast from the Past-Write a story from the perspective of a person from the past (an explorer, a cowboy, a president, a queen, an adventurer, a scientist, etc.). Put yourself in that story, and include historical details that add a realistic touch to the writing.
