Swimming Carnival
On Wednesday 7 February we had our Swimming Carnival at Lane Cove Aquatic Centre. Thank
you firstly to Mrs Butler who was instrumental in organising the carnival. Many thanks also to all
the teachers who worked tirelessly throughout the day to ensure it was a successful day. It was a
wonderful opportunity to attend the carnival and see the students trying their best and having a
great day.
Thank you as well to all the parent helpers for assisting on the day and to the many parents who
came along and supported their children. The efforts of all is greatly appreciated and contributes
to the sense of community that we have here at Lane Cove West PS. I look forward to seeing the
students receive ribbons and age champions being named in the coming weeks. The Zone team
will be announced in week 4.
Vehicles in the School Carpark
I would like to remind all parents, grandparents or other family members that when dropping off and
picking up students, please do not drive your vehicle into the staff carpark at any time of the day.
The Department of Education, in light of the events at Banksia Rd PS last November, have issued a Safety
Alert to all principals to review all access by vehicles onto school grounds.
In the coming weeks, the front school fence will be replaced to ensure entry onto school premises by
parents, contractors and visitors is prohibited to ensure the safety of all students, staff and visitors during
school hours.
We understand there are times when a parent or family member needs access to the disabled parking and
this will be permitted after approval from the principal.
Parking Around the School – please obey road signage
On Monday afternoon, a car was parked in the Bus Stop zone on Cullen Rd after school. Not only is this
illegal, it endangered the lives of students in our school who catch the bus home as they needed to be
escorted by teachers onto the road to get on the school bus. We would like to remind parents and
family members to obey the road rules surrounding the school to ensure the safety of our
community.
As the safety of our students is one of our primary concerns, staff will take photos of cars parked illegally
and these will be passed on to the police to ensure the safety of our students and community.
Additionally, the school has contacted local rangers to patrol the school area before school and after
school.

Skoolbag App
The Skoolbag App is our main form of daily communication. I encourage any parents who have
not downloaded the App to do so.
See leaflet at the end of the newsletter for more details about the app.
Flu alert
Even though it is more common to catch the flu, or experience flu-like symptoms, in the colder months of the year, the school has already been notified of the first case of the flu. This is just a
reminder that if your child is suffering the flu or flu-like symptoms please do not send them to school as this will help to minimise the spread of the flu to other students, staff and parents.
Other ways to help prevent flu include:
•keeping surfaces clean
•washing your hands regularly
•avoiding sharing cups and cutlery
•covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
Stewart House Collection Bags
As you may have noticed, collection bags have been sent home with the children this week for the
Stewart House clothes drive. These bags can be filled with clothes, accessories and manchester but
please ensure that all items are clean and useable. This clothing drive provides help to almost
20,000 disadvantaged children and helps keep 7.5 million kilograms of waste out of landfill each
year. Bags are to be taken to the disabled toilets next to the hall. As you can appreciate,
we can not accept bags at the front office due to potential hazards for children and
visitors. We thank you for your support!
The last day for collection will be Wednesday the 28th of February, after which they will be
donated.
Teddy Bear’s Picnic
Yesterday our Kindergarten students
enjoyed a lovely picnic with their
favourite furry friends from home!
Splitting of the Native Bee Hive
Monday morning Stage 2 students were
given a special opportunity to watch the
splitting of our native bee hive. Thanks to
Melissa Ballantyne from Sydney Stingless
Bees, our bee hive has just become two! We
learnt so much about the Queen Bee and the
structure of the close knit community
involving the drones and worker bees that
help make our gardens strong by pollinating
the flowering plants.
Mindfulness Update
The Life Skills Group program, Mindfulness in Action, recently commenced and the students and
teachers could not be more excited! Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present to what is
happening in the moment, without thinking about the past or imagining the future. Life Skills
Group programs are curriculum aligned. Each week Life Skills teachers facilitate classes aligning
lifelong values, fundamental movement, and positive psychology through various games,
breathing exercises, guided stories and relaxation. Each stage is developmentally appropriate and
carefully geared to each specific year level. We are happy to be working with you, your child and
the school community to support, grow, inspire, and build happy, healthy children. Life Skills
Group is pleased to provide parents and carers with a weekly update on your child’s Mindfulness in
Action Program. Please follow the ‘Snippets Newsletter’ and practise the daily activities with your
child. Remembering that the practice of mindfulness works best when it is maintained regularly,
even if in very small ways. We can assure you it will be fun and a lovely way to spend a few
minutes extra with your child.
Week 2 Mindful listening and honesty
Listening is an important skill to develop in children and this week we focused on mindful listening
and the value of honesty. The students practised listening mindfully by being really still and quiet,
listening to a soothing sound and focusing on the start and ending of that sound. Students became
aware that by continually incorporating mindful listening, we become more ‘tuned in’ and begin to
hear conversations, sounds, feelings and thoughts in a clearer manner. Students identified reasons
why it is important to be honest, how we show honesty and how it feels when people are
dishonest. Students then practised being honest independently whilst being an active participant of
a game. It was wonderful seeing children recognise that honesty helps us to all enjoy a game!
For parents/carers: Do we always really hear what our children are trying to tell us or convey?
Today, make a conscious effort to mindfully communicate with your child, through listening and/or
speaking. Perhaps take a mindful listening walk and tune into all the sounds around you.
P&C Update
Class contact list survey
Each year, contact lists need to be compiled for each class at our school, to help organise
social events for the class, for communications from the P&C, and for teachers to quickly
communicate with parents. To help us do that, please provide your contact details via the
link below as soon as possible, so that contact lists can be compiled and distributed.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/lcwpscontact
The survey only needs to be completed once for each family as several children can be
listed. We will close the survey at 5pm Monday 19th February and distribute the lists to
class parents.
While you are completing the survey, please consider whether you would be willing to act as
a class parent in 2018! Some information is included in the link, and you can indicate if you
are willing to take on this role in the survey. Class parents will be appointed at the parent
information evening on Thursday 15th February.
Thank you in advance for submitting your contact details!
School Banking
School banking will resume once a new volunteer has been found to co-ordinate this
program.
The School Banking Co-ordinator role is a great volunteer job. It comes with full training, a
fantastic group of volunteer “tellers”. It is a job that could be shared between two people and
requires no more than 1 hour per week (currently on a Thursday Morning).
For more information on the role, please contact Stuart Turner, President of the P&C via
email [email protected]
