Concentratingonthethemeofartandenvironment,thismas-terplanforlocalSouthKingstownHighSchoolintegratesartintotheschoolgroundsandpromotesasustainableenvironmentforlearning,recreationandbeauty.ReducingthecarbonfootprintofSKHSwithplantingsandutilizingsolarpowerwillhelpSKstepforwardwithasustainablecampus.Controllingstormwaterrunoffthroughnaturalmethodssuchasswalesanddryriverbedswillcreatespacesforlearn-ingandartisticinterpretation.
Moundedamphitheaterwithtallnativemeadowgrass.Itprovidesaplacefortheater,graduation,outdoorclassesandgamespectating.
Alargevegetablegardenforstudentstolearnaboutagricultureandgrowtheirownfood.Anoutdooreatingareaisabuttingthis.

Planninga30lotdevelopmentforthis12.22acresitehadalotofconstraints.Tomaketheconfigurationcommunityoriented,thereisa3,559foottrailthatloopsthroughoutthesitetoconnecteveryone,and4.83acresofopenspacetopromoteanactivelifestyle.Anabundanceoftreesprovideshade,windblockandaesthetics.

Thisenclosedcourtyardhadapermanentconcretefloor,soIanalyzedthesunfortheprimelocationofabove-groundelements.Iwantedtocreateaflowthroughthecourtyard,withplacesforemployeestoeatlunch,sitdownandalsobesecluded.Idesignedraisedstoneseatingwallsandmeshedthatwithtallgrassandplanterstobringgreenandheightintothespace.OneoftheconstraintswasweneededtomaintainthefeelofRIDOTsoIincorporatedasidewalk,andmetalsculpture.Partofcreatingthemetalsculpturewashavingthewaterfountain,whichwasintendedtodissipateloudcitynoises.
Metalsculptureandwaterfeatureamongstseatingsandplantings.
Seatingwallswithtallgrassandsidewalk.

Livingoffofthelandwasathemeusedforthis8.49acresiteonLaurelLane.Afamilyoffourcanproduceenoughfoodfromthevariousfruitandnuttreesandvegetablegardenforyeararoundsus-tenance.Thehouseisalowimpactdesign‘zerohouse’whichsuppliessolarpanelsandrainwatercollection.Onlyasmallareaaroundthehousewasdisturbedtokeepthenaturalforestsystems.Nativevegeta-tionwasstrategicallyplacedtobufferfromwindandsun.Theplaystructureismadefrommoundedsoilforfunwithallagesfortherearedifferentchallengesoneachside.

RedesigningtheRINLAheadquarters,Ifocusedonreroutingthevehiculartraffictobemorepedestrianfriendly,andcreat-ingalargergatheringarea.Iwantedtheretobespaceforlearninganddisplay.Thefirepitwasproposedtomaketheareausableatallhoursoftheday.TokeeptheheritageofRhodeIslandalive,Iutilizednaturalstoneandnativeplantings.Allofthetreeswillbetaggedtoformanarboretum.Imadesuretointegratepermeablepavementandmanyplantingstohelpwithdrainageandrunoff.

Biscuit City Historic Mill
Datingbacktothe1800’sBiscuitCityMillwasknowntotheNarragansettIndiansasthe“greatspring”itwasalsoacottonmanufactory.Topreservethispristinelandtheinvasivesneedtobecleanedoutandnativesplanted.LivestakingmethodswithSalixdiscolorandCornussericeawillhelpsolvethedrainageproblem,stabilizethebanks,provideshadeand,filterpollution.

Goalsforthisprojectweretopromotehealthylivingbycreatingtrailsthroughthesite,createanenvironmentalclassroomandconnectiontotheheritagebyprovidingsignage,helpthewildlifehabitatbykeepingtheexistinghealthynativevegetationandtodealwitherosion,drainage,bridgesandbenchesthroughdesignmakingBiscuitCityadestinationforcommunitymembers.

Thisprojectstartedwithaphotograph.Wereplicateditwithtechnicalpensonmylar.Thenwemadeadesignoutofit,mineevolvedwithconnectionofotherrowers.Wethenweretozoominandfindaunitshapefromourdesignandcreateaplanusingonlyrightangles.

Fromourplanweweretomakeamodeloutofcardboard,andthentorecreateitinSketchUp.TodifferentiatebetweenthepositiveandnegativespaceIusedelevation,creatingadeckarea,andalowerelevation,whichisforestedsowhenyouareonthedeckyouareabletolookintothetreetops.
