OUR AIMS

Leabrook School is an educational establishment that admits children from Rossendale Accrington and Clitheroe mainstream primary schools who are displaying emotional and behavioural difficulties. The short stay school also provides full time education for children who are excluded for a fixed period, or permanently excluded from mainstream school. Leabrook is part of the Lancashire Pupil Reintegration Service, which provides support to schools, parents and children who experience these difficulties.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

“We aim to provide a positive learning experience” Children admitted to Leabrook School usually return to mainstream education after two to three terms. Children excluded from their mainstream schools remain for the period of their exclusion and then return to school. Permanently excluded children remain at the short stay school until it is thought appropriate to provide an alternative placement. Throughout their stay the children remain on the roll of their primary school, thus the school retains some responsibility for the children and is actively encouraged to maintain contact with them.

OUR OBJECTIVES

• To provide an environment where children are helped to modify their behaviours so that control is internalised by themselves and not others.

• To use a positive approach where self achievement and success is praised and rewarded.

• To develop self esteem by concentrating on building confidence and pride in themselves and what they do.

• To encourage tolerance and understanding of each other’s needs and difficulties, in order to foster mutual trust and respect.

• To provide a structured environment, which will allow for consistency of approach, developing feelings of security.

• To recognise and provide each pupil’s entitlement to a full curriculum enabling them to achieve their potential.

• To provide a caring environment where the safety of the children is a priority. Our overall philosophy is caring in nature and centres on positive interactions and the use of behaviour modification, so that the children can develop social, emotional and educational skills so that they become well-adjusted members of the wider community.

THE ROLE OF PARENTS

The successful educational experience for our children is best achieved when staff and parents work together. Communication with parents may include the following:

• Home visits • Parents evenings • Discussions at the Short stay school with regard to progress,

assessments, future schools etc • Letters and telephone calls • Home-school diaries • Parent newsletters • Home reading booklets • Social functions e.g. Christmas concert, Open afternoons, prize

giving

Parents are sent copies of their child’s Individual Education Plan and literacy and mathematics targets. IEPs are evaluated every half term, and new targets set. All parents are made aware of the award system and are encouraged to reinforce good behaviour at home. Parents are encouraged to contact and visit us at the school whenever they wish. If parents feel the need to confide in staff we are only too pleased to help where we can or to guide them towards other people or agencies who may be able to help. If the need arises we may seek their active co-operation in responding to excessive pressures created by their child in the school.

The Reward System

In order to encourage our pupils to learn, display and internalise acceptable behaviour we operate a whole school system where children are rewarded for appropriate behaviour.

Our mascot “Billy Leabrook” is at the core of the system.

Children will aim to earn Bonuses from Billy for appropriate behaviour in and around school. They will be given the opportunity to earn 20 Billy Bonuses each day (100 per week)

At total of 5 Billy bonuses are awarded for each lesson for each of the following areas: • Work (this is awarded for completing work or making a good effort) • Listening -(this is awarded for paying attention and listening to instructions or support) • Language (this is awarded for appropriate language which is friendly and clean) • Positive Place (this is awarded for being in the right place in class – eg in seat) • Hands Up (this is awarded for putting hands up before talking (to discourage interruptions)

Pupils also earn: • 1 bonus for appropriate behaviour during assembly • 1 bonus for morning playtime • 1 bonus for lunch time • 1 bonus for lunchtime playtime • 1 bonus for taxi behaviour

• Pupils can also earn an extra Billy bonus for effort and positive

behaviour. • The pupils will have to earn 75 in a week to be involved in Golden Time on

Friday afternoon. The Golden activities involve a range of activities such as photography, craft, visits to local park, karaoke, gardening, cross country running, puppet show etc.

• Every week the child with the most Bonuses will win the Golden Award, and will be able to choose a prize from the Billy Box.

• Children will bank their Billy Bonuses each week and when they reach 1,000 they will be able to choose a treat – either cinema, bowling or burger meal.

SANCTIONS A system of positive rewards and incentives has been developed to encourage appropriate behaviour rather than the reliance on negative sanctions. Unacceptable behaviour can often be curtailed by the use of reason or failing that, oral reprimand. It is accepted, however, that further responses will sometimes be necessary to deal with unacceptable behaviour. The following consequences are applied in the short stay school: 1. Verbal reprimand or ignoring from class teacher. 2. Time spent deliberately off-task to be repaid during break or privilege

time. 3. Suspension of, or withdrawal from, leisure activities. 4. Verbal reprimand from the Headteacher. 5. Letters or phone call home telling parents or guardians about

unacceptable behaviour and discussing possible reasons for this. 6. Letter or phone call home requesting parent to come into the short stay

school to discuss problems. If the incident is seen to be of a severe enough nature, parents will be informed of the possibility of exclusion from the short stay school.

7. In the event of wilful damage to, or theft of property, parents will be informed of the incident and the cost of repair or replacement.

Depending on the severity of the incident the appropriate action will be used. A serious breach of school rules such as violent behaviour, or a refusal to accept school discipline may result in the exclusion of a child from the short stay school in accordance with LEA guidelines. Especially good behaviour on the playground by all the children may lead to an extra 5-10 minutes play being given. In class if children achieve their work targets then some ‘free activity’ time may be given.

THE CURRICULUM The curriculum at Leabrook offers a balanced and broadly based curriculum which takes into consideration the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of the children and also attempts, whatever their age, to prepare for them to become well-adjusted members of the wider community. The curriculum takes into account the requirements of the National Curriculum, wherever possible, given that many of the children will be reintegrated into mainstream education. The curriculum at Leabrook School is appropriately selected and aims to strike a balance between the children’s need for security and stability and their entitlement to experiences, which are broadly based, appropriately challenging and stimulating. The curriculum: • Lays the foundation for future learning by promoting positive attitudes

and facilitating the co-operation between peers and adults. • Creates a learning environment which focuses on an individual need,

interest and concern yet requires children to work collaboratively and develop their individual social skills.

• By regular and consistent monitoring and assessment will maximise success by matching levels of challenge to individual children’s levels of attainments and rates of development.

• Provides equal opportunities regardless of race, gender, and religion.

OFF SITE ACTIVITIES Swimming As part of the National Curriculum, all children attending Leabrook school will develop their water, swimming and life saving skills, through swimming lessons at Marl Pits Swimming Pool on Monday afternoons. Either the swimming instructor or one of the class teachers, under the guidance of the instructor, will teach them. They will travel to and from the swimming baths on a Rossendale Transport bus, arranged by Rossendale Borough Council, which will collect them from and return them to short stay school. The class teachers will act as group leaders and there will be at least one teacher/member of staff for every six pupils. Pupils will leave at 1.20pm and return to short stay school at 2.30pm. Pupils will need trunks (not shorts) or a swimming costume, a hat for pupils with long hair, a towel, comb and a waterproof bag (e.g. a plastic carrier bag). Pupils may wear goggles if parents send a letter of request. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES The educational objectives for each activity are available on request. RISK ASSESSMENT Your child’s safety is of great importance to us. There is a high level of supervision from members of qualified and experienced staff. A Risk Assessment has been completed for all activities, which identifies where there is a potential risk or a hazard. First Aid Equipment will be taken on every off site activity, and a qualified First Aider will always be present. The event or activity will be cancelled if there are too few staff available, or adverse weather is forecast.

CODE OF CONDUCT For every regular off site activity we provide, there is a Code of Conduct that we expect pupils to follow. If pupils break the Code, a risk assessment will take place and a decision will be made whether the pupil will be allowed to continue to participate in the activity.

INCLUSION During a child’s second or third term at Leabrook school an Exit Review is held to which all those concerned with the child are invited. A decision is made to request a Statutory Assessment or to reintegrate the child to his referring school or sometimes an alternative school. A child attends his school on two days a week initially and is occasionally monitored by visits from a Learning Support Assistant. The behavioural programme continues in Leabrook and at the mainstream school. If this is successful the reintegration is stepped up to three days a week and then eventually full-time. The inclusion programme can take on average from 6-8 weeks. The Lancashire Education Inclusion Service is available to primary schools where advice, observation and possible intervention is available, to help to maintain children experiencing emotional or behavioural difficulties in school. Parents are contacted and are involved as much as they wish. Home-school liaison is viewed by ourselves as being of paramount importance. An inclusion service teacher may work with the school and the child in an attempt to address the child’s needs in the mainstream school. If after reviewing the situation it is felt that the child would benefit from a place at the short stay school the child’s name is put forward to the termly admissions panel meeting. Mainstream schools may seek the expert advice of Leabrook school staff who will support their schools through advice, observation and behaviour programmes. The mainstream school, prior to LPRS intervention, should seek parental consent for LPRS.

The School day at Leabrook is from 9.00am to 3.15pm.

THE SCHOOL DAY

A mini-bus will collect children from home and return them to their home address. Requests for children to be picked up from or dropped off elsewhere must be in writing.

There are two mini-buses that serve each end of the Rossendale Valley. Each mini-bus has an escort and they are valuable members of the short stay school team and will relay messages between home and school. Pupils from Burnley, Rochdale and Accrington may also attend the school and transport is arranged accordingly. Children must remain seated on the mini-buses at all times wearing the seat belts provided and behave as directed by the escorts. A parent or adult carer is expected to be present when the child is collect or returned into their care. If there is no-one to receive your child, the escort is instructed to return your child to school or drop them off at the nearest police station. The taxi firms contracted are: Bacup/Whitworth Area Royal Taxis 01706 831111 Accrington/ Oswaldtwistle Area CB Radio Cars 01254 232333

DINNERS

Dinner money is collected on Monday mornings and should be brought in an envelope clearly marked with the child’s name. If your child has any food allergies, dislikes, is a vegetarian, or requires kosher or halal food please inform us in writing. Please encourage your child to use cutlery correctly and to sit up to a table when eating meals at home and develop good habits. Milk is provided free to all children. If you think your child could be entitled to Free School Meals, contact us for an application form. WINTER WEATHER If snow falls overnight and the roads are bad, there is a likelihood that the taxis will not arrive or be late. In these circumstances please contact the taxi firm and Leabrook School. They will be able to advise you. If snow falls during the school day, and roads become difficult because of heavy snow, the taxis will be asked to collect the children from the short stay school earlier than normal, in order that they get home safely and at a reasonable time. If you are not at home please ring the school for information and give a name and address where your child can be left. Please send your child in wellingtons/books in winter weather with a change of footwear. If it proves impossible to open the short stay school for reasons of snow and ice, you are advised to listen to Radio Lancashire, who offer their services to schools.

HEALTH The School Nurse visits the short stay school on a regular basis and annual medical checks are made by the School Medical Officer. If there are any queries or problems, they can be contacted on Rossendale 227021. All children are checked for sight, hearing and general physical development on a regular basis. Please advise the school of any special problems your child has. This is best done in writing to avoid confusion. Medicine is only allowed to be administered by staff if it is prescribed by a doctor and is accompanied by a letter from a parent giving permission for it to be administered and clear instructions of the times and dosages. However, the best place for a child who is ill is at home. If your child has been prescribed Ritalin, please ensure that the school has adequate supplies to ensure the tablet is taken at the correct time. All tablets or other types of medication must be given to the escort for safekeeping in an envelope or secure container and must not be carried by pupils. ABSENCES It is extremely important that Leabrook School is informed of your child’s absence as soon as possible. As a guide we would like you to contact us in this way

• Send a note or a letter if the absence is due to an appointment – as soon as you are aware of the date and time.

• Telephone Leabrook and leave a message as soon as possible if the absence is unexpected - due to (illness etc).

You may inform the escort of the absence, and send a letter through the escort but you must inform school through the above methods so that we have received official notification. This is so that your child will receive an authorised absence mark.

HOLIDAYS

Your child’s education is important to us all and attendance is vital to ensure your child receives the best education possible. Please try to have family holidays during the school holiday pattern. If you wish to take your child on holiday during term time, you must write to the Headteacher

requesting permission. If permission is not granted and you take your child, the absences will be noted as unauthorised and you may be liable to prosecution by the local authority. DAMAGE TO SCHOOL PROPERTY Parents/carers will be asked for a contribution towards the cost of any damage caused by their child. PROBLEMS AND COMPLAINTS Parents on their initial visit to Leabrook School will have been explained as clearly as possible the work of the short stay school and the difficulties that can be experienced. If there are any problems or complaints, it is helpful if they can be raised with the Headteacher as soon as possible. A complaint maybe the result of perceived unfair treatment, unwelcome or disputed decisions, delay or dissatisfaction concerning decision-making, or the quality of the service.

Children, parents, guardians, or a person acting on the behalf of a child at the short stay school may make complaints. If after discussion, the complainant is not satisfied as a result, advice is available on further procedures. The Headteacher of the child’s school should also be able to give advice.
