It seems like a long time since we have all seen each other. Hopefully everyone has taken the time to keep busy, and hopefully we are now back to better weather and better luck with “Guild things”! After a quiet few months we will now start to be busy with lots of good programs and workshops lined up for you as well as the UFO Challenge, various charity/Outreach projects and a Fall Sale (November 4, 2017) to prepare for… so, I am sure that there is something there that you and your sewing machine can work on. Congratulations again to Alexis Mongeau whose quilt was awarded Viewer’s Choice in our President’s Challenge in January. Her quilt will now join those from other Guilds throughout Eastern Ontario and will travel in the Quilt Show Circuit throughout 2017. As our Quilts on the Tay has been postponed to 2018 (due to a lack of suitable venue), arrangements are being made to bring these quilts to one of our fall meetings as a trunk show so that those of you who are unable to attend one of the Quilt Shows this year will have an opportunity to see the Canada’s 150th Celebration Quilts. Bits & Pieces PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Marilyn Robinson

Welcome back. It seems like a long time since we have all seen each other. Hopefully

everyone has taken the time to keep busy, and hopefully we are now back to better weather

and better luck with “Guild things”!

After a quiet few months we will now start to be busy with lots of good programs and workshops lined up for you as well as the UFO Challenge, various charity/Outreach projects

and a Fall Sale (November 4, 2017) to prepare for… so, I am sure that there is something

there that you and your sewing machine can work on.

Congratulations again to Alexis Mongeau whose quilt was awarded Viewer’s Choice in our

President’s Challenge in January. Her quilt will now join those from other Guilds throughout Eastern Ontario and will travel in the Quilt Show Circuit throughout 2017.

As our Quilts on the Tay has been postponed to 2018 (due to a lack of suitable venue), arrangements are

being made to bring these quilts to one of our fall meetings as a trunk show so that those of you who are

unable to attend one of the Quilt Shows this year will have an opportunity to see the Canada’s 150th

Celebration Quilts.

There was no February meeting due to renovations at the Lions Hall.

The Common Threads

April Executive Meeting

Date: April 11, 2017 @ 10:00 a.m. Hostess: Marilyn Robinson 273-9732 Address: 243 Taggart Lane, RR2, Westport Directions: From Perth go to Westport and take CR10, Perth Road, towards Kingston. Turn left onto Massassauga Road and follow this until you have to turn left on Taggart Lane. When the road branches, take the left hand branch. Car pooling is recommended.

Caution: Massassauga Road and Taggart Lane are windy and hilly, and often rough.

Next Meeting - Tuesday, April 25 @ 7:00 p.m.

We have a full roster of fellow guild members offering their Tips & Tricks. There are six stations, 15 minutes at each, so wear your running shoes and come prepared for a full and exciting night!

1. Mitred Corners, Sue Gieratz: Never again be intimidated or frustrated by mitred borders on quilts. Learn the easy way to create perfect mitres every time - regardless of the angle, without any complicated calculations or special tools.

2. Cathedral Windows, Tricia Klymko: Cathedral windows are a relaxing and rewarding experience; get inspiration to make a handmade, warm and colourful coverlet that you will have great pride in.

3. Quick Binding, Anna Cornel: Regular method of binding using 2-1/2” or 2-1/4” binding NOT on bias, which gives nice mitred corners and a firm finish, and helps to protect the quilt you have worked so hard on!

4. Invisible Circles, Helga Zimmerly: How can you insert circles in your work without a seam showing? … and then insert another circle butting into that circle, and then another, for a string of bubbles. Helga will demonstrate Lily Lam’s unique technique.

5. Quilt Labels, Cathy Price: With some freezer paper, your choice of fabric, and your printer, you can have professional looking labels for your quilts using the Office Program on your computer.

6. Quilt as you Go, Marie Amyot: Reversible quilt-as-you-go methods including Japanese folded patchwork and

envelope patchwork. No quilting required, no borders or backing to worry about!

Shop of the Month

Our shop of the month for March is Flair with Fabric from Chesterville.

There will be lots of quilting products and fabrics for sale, and raffle tickets to buy for a chance to win a basket of quilting supplies worth at least $100.

Library

Walking Foot Quilting Designs (2016) by Melissa Marginet

This book is a collection of dozens of quilting designs using the walking foot, to give you over 100 ideas for quilting. The designs can also be used for free motion, long arm, and hand quilting. Chapters are divided into grid designs, triangle designs, sectioned designs, etc. Easy to follow diagrams.

Quilt Giving: 19 Simple Quilt Patterns to Make and Give (2016) by Deborah Fisher Quilt Giving has patterns for nineteen quilts that make perfect presents. Patterns are easy to cut and piece, using beautiful color and easy sewing techniques. The quilts skew toward the modern style, with lots of bright, bold color; defined geometric shapes, and lots of negative space.

Double Vision Quilts: Simply Layer Shapes & Color for Richly Complex Curved Designs (2016) by Louisa L. Smith A very interesting book that inspires and challenges. The author uses innovative layering, playful patterns, and delightful color choices to create 11 mind-bending quilt

projects. Lots of good instruction re layering, appliqué, embellishing, and use of colour. A fun – but challenging – book.

No Scrap Left Behind: 16 Quilt Projects That Celebrate Scraps of All Sizes (2017) by Amanda Jean Nyberg Too many bits of fabric that you have been going to use? You need No Scrap Left Behind! Instructions for sixteen quilt projects that help you work with colors and values, using tiny bits and orphan blocks, to make quilts and other decor projects. There's also good info on storing and organizing your bits of fabric. ~ Marilyn ~

Block of the Month

This month’s BOM is Monkey Wrench. It is made with four identical 6-1/2” blocks, and is effective using three fabrics - light background and two darker fabrics. As the pieces are small, foundation piecing is easiest to achieve accuracy. Instructions will be available for pick-up at the BOM table. ~ Heather ~

In Paul Leger’s Patchwork Illusion Quilts workshop on May 17, with careful colour selection, you will take traditional quilt block designs and create a 3D illusion patchwork cube. Bethany Garner of Kingston Fibre Artists is running a two-day workshop on June 6 & 20. On Day 1, you will learn to dye using Proxion MX dyes, then on Day 2 you will create a new, freeform quilt with your new fabric. ~ Marlene & Linda ~

LAWS needs your help

Lanark Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) needs 42 pads for the bottom of their kennels. The pads need

to be softish, but thin enough to be easily washed, so about 1/2” to 3/4” think. There are three sizes of cages: A) 28” x 26” (40 cages) B) 22” x 28” (40 cages) C) 30-1/2” x 28” (2 cages) LAWS are gradually replacing the older ones as they can afford with the largest size. So, at least 40 of each of A and B as they need to be washed every day plus any accidents. They usually don’t have all cages in use, so that gives them some extras. If you can zigzag the letter designating the size on a corner of the pad it will make it easier to keep them sorted as to which pen they fit. ~ Lois MacLean ~

Did you know?

Tips for Labelling your quilts:

"My nieces and nephews loved to look for the labels on quilts I made for them when they were little. Special messages just for them with nicknames, dates and what occasion it was given (Christmas, birthday, etc.). I always made the labels from leftover fabrics used in the quilt top and printed the wording in my handwriting. Funny thing was, they were so trained to look for the label, there were times they didn't look at the design before they were searching out the label." ~Colleen Tauke, Sewing Specialist, Fons & Porter~

"Label all your quilts - even the 'not important' ones: simple labels for simple quilts (maybe just with fabric marker), more complex labels for fancier quilts."

~Lori Baker, Acquisitions Editor, Golden Quilting Community, F+W Media~

Your tips, hints or general news are needed for this section or elsewhere in the newsletter, so please email or give them to Lynne Green. Thanks.
