ATTENTION Ladies & Gentlemen:
The church kitchen needs a thorough cleaning. So find a partner and spend a couple hours cleaning a section or two. This includes the cabinets and refrigera-tors/freezers. This is scheduled to be done during the first week of May, the 2nd-7th. All help will be greatly appreciated! Please mark down what parts you have done. Many thanks. ~ Ardelle

Senior Recognition Sunday May 8th
The high school juniors from First Lutheran and their parents will be hosting a reception to recognize our graduating seniors on Sunday, May 8th between services, with cake being served in the Fellowship Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend. The seniors will also be recognized during the 10:30 worship service that Sunday.
Congratulations to our 2016 graduates:
Andrew Askeland Jacob Beevers Blake Belden Bryce Frick Jacob Gasper Erin Goebel Nate Lansing Kalvin Orcutt Austin Stogdill Taylor Zieser Matteo Zucca (foreign exchange student)
On Pentecost Sunday, May 15th, the Evan-gelism Committee will host a reception between worship services for 12 youth who will be affirming their baptism at the 10:30 worship service that day. Those be-ing confirmed include:
Rylie Aldrich Will Beevers Joe Burke Jacob Butler Lacey Cole Shaun DeMoss Zach Fisher Madison Hanson Kamille Hawker Elijah Heims Tanner Kelchen Kolin Wright
Confirmation is not a graduation, but it IS a "commencement"......a beginning. From that moment, our youth need MORE en-couragement to become active members of the Church in the world. Just as you were encouraged by adults around you, it is so important to continue to guide our youth these days.
So as we are people of Pentecost in this Church, let us be full of the Holy Spirit and help to light a FIRE inside our youth to continue in their relationship with Jesus and with their congregation. Please plan to attend this special day for these youth and fulfill your portion of the congregational vows made at each of their baptisms.
“Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet,
and a light unto my path.”
- Psalm 119:105

Another adult choir season is coming to a close, and I would like to take a moment to say thank you to the following individuals who so unselfishly share their musical gifts to en-hance the worship services here at First Lu-theran: Sopranos — Dawn Askeland, Diane Childs, Janis Creveling, Holly Kress, Lori Roberts; Altos — Cindy Baumgartner, Diane Blatt, Penny Holtz; Tenor — Tom Moor-house; Basses — Jon Kress, Collin White, Jim Zumbach; and Accompanist — Cindy Mickens. Their levels of commitment and ac-countability are high; they know that in such a small choir, every voice counts.
These choir members also wear many other hats in our congregation, so you may see them involved in multiple services on any giv-en weekend - not just when the choir is scheduled to sing. They are also good sports and have a high degree of patience when their director says, “I have an idea…”
We sing a wide variety of musical styles — for our own enjoyment, to challenge our-selves, to try and reach out to all ages of our congregation — but most importantly, to the Glory of God (although your kind words of support help keep us going throughout the year as well!). We look forward to sharing our music ministry with you again in the fall (after we “recharge” a bit this summer), and as al-ways, NEW MEMBERS ARE WELCOME!
~ Kathy Moorhouse, Adult Choir Director
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
**Please Note: We LOVE having special
music during summer services. If you are
interested in sharing your vocal or instrumen-
tal talents in this way, please call Kathy
Moorhouse (927-5594) at least two weeks in
advance so we can coordinate your musical
selection(s) within the service and accompany
you, if needed. (A special word of encour-
agement to our youth: we’d love to have you
participate in worship in this special way!)
We invite our church family to join us in celebrating Nate Lansing's graduation from Maquoketa Valley High School! Nate's party will be held at our home, 228 Virginia Street, Delaware, on May 21st from 1:00-5:00 P.M. We thank you for the love, friendship, and encouragement you've blessed him with. We hope you can join us for the celebration!

Gloria would love to see past students, so please spread the word! If you can’t make it to the party and would like to wish her well, you can mail a card to:

Stewardship & Evangelism Committees Collaborate: Collecting Supplies to
Support our Missionaries, the Oyebades
From now until the end of May, First Lutheran will be collecting donations to assist our mis-sionaries, Mary Beth & Bayo Oyebade. Please place items in the designated place in the nar-thex. Below is the list of things still being col-lected during May. The most needed items at this time include:
Stickers (for school papers)
Baby books
Pregnancy books

Marshmallows
Chocolate Chips
Water chestnuts
Taco seasoning
Vanilla
Onion soup mix
Boullion cubes (beef & chicken - no MSG)
Good quality white board markers

get here are really waxy and not very good
quality.)
Pocket charts (teachers will know what
these are)
Paint for children
Christmas gift wrap (we like to use it to dec-
orate our school rooms at Christmastime.)
Candy canes
Artificial Christmas trees (used in good con-
dition is fine)

We are looking for more volunteers to assist in the audio/visual booth for our weekend wor-ship services. If you have ever thought about possibly joining our A/V team, now is the time to try it!
Training will be provided by some of our sea-soned A/V operators. If after you are trained you decide it’s not for you, you are under no obligation to continue. Also, you can select the service(s) that will fit into your schedule.
Please contact Sandy Estill, Pastor Tony, or Lynne Rasmussen if you think you might be interested. Your help would be greatly appreciated!
Volunteers needed...
April showers are bringing May
flowers and a few unwanted weeds!
As part of our new 2016 Adopt-A-Flower Bed
program, we are looking for groups or individ-
uals who have a passion for landscaping and
preserving the welcoming outdoor beauty at
First Lutheran. These individuals would be re-
sponsible for weeding and maintaining the ex-
isting flower bed(s) of their choice.
If you have a passion for plants and a few hours
a month, contact Doug Bishop (563-920-7807) or
Lynne to reserve your flower bed today!
We are also compiling a listing of plants or
bushes which were given as a donation or in
memory of a loved one. Please contact Doug
or Lynne if you are aware of any such gifts.

May 2016 LSI News
In Celebration of Graduation.....
May’s graduation season is often a celebration of what it takes to accomplish some-thing. We celebrate dreams, determination, hard work and support, and we celebrate the pride and joy of parents, grandparents, friends, and other family members who help along the way.
We celebrate “graduations” at Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) all year round. We celebrate when a mom or dad has completed a parenting program. We celebrate when a child has completed all his goals in a skill-building program. We celebrate when an elder refugee attends a citizenship ceremony to take the oath of U.S. citizenship or when a refugee woman completes child care training. We celebrate when teenagers graduate from LSI’s Bremwood Residential Treatment Center and begin young adulthood, often with help from churches who have donated furniture or other supplies to help them set up their first apartment.
Graduation is a celebration of community. We don’t get where we are in life on our own. We get there with support. With encouragement. With a mentor. With family. You’re the family standing alongside so many people being served through LSI as they achieve life-changing milestones. Thank you.
Daring to Dream.....
Every day Taw Kaw Htoo pursues her dreams as a farmer, a child care provider, and an English student. After fleeing violence and persecution in her native Burma, Taw Kaw Htoo lived in refugee camps in Thai-land before being resettled to the U.S. She may have lost her home, but not her hope. With LSI’s support, this strong, courageous woman is daring to dream.
Her day begins at dawn at LSI’s Global Greens Farm where she farms a small plot, growing produce to sell to her community. “I like farming because I grew vegetables back in my home country,” she said. After tending her crops, she moves on to her second business of the day: caring for children. LSI’s child care business development program helps former refugees become state-licensed child care providers. Along with providing a small income, the program increases the availability of culturally appropriate child care for the refugee community, enabling more parents to enter the workforce.
“I didn’t have any professional training on how to install a car seat or do CPR,” said Taw Kaw Htoo. “LSI has helped with that. It’s great that I am able to care for the children in my community.” Caring for children helps her pursue her third dream: learning English. “My language is really important to me,” she said. “I try to teach children my language every day, and they help me learn English. I really want to speak English. That’s my biggest dream.”
