Genesis Updates A Quack-tastic time at the Long Island
Ducks game! Last weekend 15 members of
WRCC attended the Long Island Ducks vs.
Lancaster Barnstormers baseball game. A
fun time was had by all, despite the Ducks
loss. Afterwards we enjoyed a fireworks
presentation - and terrible jokes told by kids
the entire ride home!

A Word from Pastor TJ
“We preach Christ crucified: a
stumbling block to Jews and
foolishness to Gentiles, but to those
whom God has called, both Jews and
Greeks, Christ the power of God and
the wisdom of God.”
1 Corinthians 1:23-24
A fork doesn’t make a very good
hairbrush. This is a lesson you may
learn as a parent if your kids have seen
the Disney classic, the Little Mermaid.
In the movie, Ariel, who has lived her
life in the sea, collects various objects
from the land, a world she doesn’t
know or understand. One of the
running jokes of the movie is that she
tries to guess what the strange objects
from above are actually supposed to
do. This culminates with her, now
magically a human, sitting at a table
full of people and trying to brush her
hair with a fork. But a fork doesn’t
make a very good hairbrush. A fork,
after all, has a purpose. It works great
for its purpose, but its purpose isn’t
related to hair, so it doesn’t work so
well for that.
In 1st Corinthians, Paul is explaining
that the church is like a fork: it has a
purpose. At the heart of that purpose is
the mission to “preach Christ
crucified.” That’s a way of
summarizing the Gospel, the good
news about Jesus. It’s the good news
that Jesus gave himself and was
crucified so that, through his sacrifice,
we could be reconciled to God,
forgiven, restored and made new as
children of God. At the heart of the
church’s purpose is the mission to
preach and teach this message. We are
called to do this in both word and deed,
action and truth, in many ways. But it
must be at the heart of all we do
because when it isn’t, the church
doesn’t function.
This is what 1st Corinthians is all about,
a church that isn’t functioning. Paul
later explains that the people of Corinth
tried to use the church for lots of things
it wasn’t designed to do and the result
was a disaster. When the church tries to
be something it isn’t, whatever that
may be, it doesn’t work. Like a fork
full of hair, things get tangled and
confused and it’s often painful. But
when the church focuses on its true
purpose, the power and wisdom of God
are at work.
When the church focuses on its mission
to preach Christ crucified, to love as
Jesus has loved us, lives are changed,
hurting people find hope, broken
people find forgiveness, and God is
glorified. The amazing thing that Paul
explains is that this happens, even
though it doesn’t always make sense to
us. The Gospel, he says, is offensive to
some and foolish to others. So we are
sometimes tempted to think there are
better things we could do with our time
and resources. Let us resist this
temptation, however, and remember
why Jesus created his church, why he
created our church.
Let us devote ourselves fully to the
mission of Jesus, bringing good news
to a hurting world, and let us trust in his
power and his wisdom to do amazing
things through us.

Wednesday Fellowship Hello everyone! Last month I
mentioned that the baby kits we make
were no longer needed, and thankfully
they went to another charity. Since
then it was decided that we will now
knit clothes for the children in Sarah
Benjamin’s program.
Our Wednesday knitting group
however has shrunk to only a few
members. If there are any knitters out
there who would like to join us, or if
you would like to learn how to knit,
Senior Ministry
Please keep in mind our Senior
Ministry. If you or anyone you know is
in need of any assistance, or who
would like to join us at our monthly
lunch and communion held on the third
Saturday of each month at 1pm, please
give me a call at (631)744 2922.

Your Talents are wanted in September
Our Sunday School Program is looking
for individuals who love the Lord and
love kids, who would like to be a part
of growing the faith of the children in
our Sunday School programs in the
Fall.
Our JAM (Jesus And Me) and KFC
(Kids For Christ) programs need
volunteers who are willing to give of
their time to be a part of this loving
church ministry. If you can donate a
Sunday a month or perhaps two, to
either one of these programs come
September, please see Kim Schmidt or
Julie Lutz. If you have some interest
but have questions, we would be happy
to answer any questions you have. If
you would like to get more familiar
with the program before you make up
your mind, come spend some time with
us on a summer Sunday morning.
We thank you in advance for your help!
Outdoor Movie Night
On Saturday, July 30th, Genesis will
host an outdoor movie night for all
ages on the lawn. We will show "The
Peanuts Movie" starting at 8:00pm.
Bring your blankets or lawn chairs,
refreshments will be provided. Invite
your friends and neighbors!
A big thank you to everyone who
helped setup, cleanup and shop for
Coffee Hour this past year. It is always
such a great time of fellowship and a
wonderful time to get to know new
visitors and catch up with old friends.
We will be continuing a "normal"
coffee hour through the summer, but
want to give our faithful volunteers a
break if they need it. So we need
YOUR help! In the parlor is a sign-up
sheet for July and August - please sign
up for a Sunday this summer. Families
are welcome to serve together, kids
welcome!

Schmidts, Dottie Davis and Mike Scarpinito) who have each agreed to host one of our bible studies. The criteria for hosting: a pool and a willingness to open your heart and home to a group of teens for an
evening of conversation about God and fun.

Deacon’s Corner
Now that the new church year has
begun, there are a couple of deacons
whose service is up and are moving on
to other activities within the church.
We want to thank Julie Lutz and Joe
Nocerino for their many contributions
over the last three years. We are very
grateful for your time and dedication.
Taking their places, we welcome
Jeanne Carle and Lynette DeLucia to
the board this year.
As you know, Duck Pond Day is a fun
day in Wading River. At WRCC, we
put a lot of effort into making it a
success. We had tents and tables,
information about the church and our
ministries and flyers for VBS, which a
number of people took.
The weather wasn’t very cooperative,
but despite the rain it was a day of
fellowship and outreach to the
community. Thank you to everyone
who helped out with the setup, cleanup,
and helped running games for children
and supervising the bounce house.
The Deacons are still discussing how to
best be of service to our surrounding
communities and welcoming new
people. One way to share the good
news is to invite friends and family a
few times a year to church or to one of
our ministries or groups. Jesus said to
His disciples to go and teach all people
to the end of the earth. As church
members we are all called to be
disciples.
Jesus Prays for His Disciples:
“I have revealed you to those whom
you gave me out of the world. They
were yours; you gave them to me and
they have obeyed your word. Now
they know that everything you have
given me comes from you. For I
gave them the words you gave
me and they accepted them. They
knew with certainty that I came from
you, and they believed that you sent
me. I pray for them. I am not praying
for the world, but for those you have
given me, for they are yours. All I
have is yours, and all you have is
mine. And glory has come to me
through them. I will remain in the
world no longer, but they are still in
the world, and I am coming to
you. Holy Father, protect them by
the power of your name, the name
you gave me, so that they may be
one as we are one. While I was with
them, I protected them and kept them
safe by that name you gave me. None
has been lost except the one doomed
to destruction so that Scripture
would be fulfilled.”
“I am coming to you now, but I say
these things while I am still in the
world, so that they may have the full
measure of my joy within them. 14 I
have given them your word and the
world has hated them, for they are
not of the world any more than I am
of the world. My prayer is not that
you take them out of the world but
that you protect them from the evil
one. They are not of the world, even
as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the
truth; your word is truth. As you sent
me into the world, I have sent them
into the world. For them I sanctify
myself, that they too may be truly
sanctified.” John 17: 6-19
