Closing of theGrove

Will be October 14th

It takes participation by our members to attend & work at our Post events - to raise funds for much needed repairs & to support our veteran activities - for example, we donated $400 to a Legion family from Wyoming Coun-ty who lost everything from flooding earlier in the year.Chuck Herschlag sent a $300 donation to national by way of Department for the National Emergency Relief Fund to help those legion members devastated by hurricanes. These are the type of things that make me so proud of what we do.

In the last couple months, we have purchased new carpets. There have been a number of repairs made particularly in the Grove. Wiring that was a Fire waiting to happen is being corrected. A large portion of the Grove roof is being replaced that was all rotted out. Work on a number of other items has been completed. The lighting on our American flag in the front of the Post has been fixed. This has been one of my pet peeves. We need sup-port & funding to continue to make these types of repairs & do the work the American Legion stands for.

I was at Latko’s the other day to get a printing job done. The owner recognized by my picture & said he read my monthly message. When I picked up the job an employ-ee recognized my name form reading my message. My question to you is Do the members read my messag-es? I have asked a number of questions/comments over the last year-plus. Do you have relatives that are veter-ans? We have lost close to 100 members in the last two years. Kids that may be interested in SAL/ Motorcyclists interested in starting a Legion Riders?

What activities would you like to see? Give Tony a hand with minor repairs, asked for someone to take on Mobili-ty, asked for a Chairman & input for Veterans’ Day ( I will not be here) someone with artistic ability, someone to do publicity to advertise our events. The list goes on & I have NOT HAD ONE RESPONSE! OF 400 members, the few doing much of the work is getting close to burn-out.

Don’t forget we are now open on Sundays for the Bills games. Watch for the “closing of the Grove,” we will need help for that. The Executive Meeting is on the first Wed. at 7pm & the Membership Meeting is the 2nd Wed. at 7pm.

I am very pleased with the progress getting repairs made & the number of events taken place over the sum-mer. Here’s to an ever better year to come.

Hope you had a good summer. Fall is quickly approaching. The summer has been very busy especially in the Grove. Thanks to Wayne Sorrentino for his organization of the Special Olym-pics Picnic. This was a County event & Lamm’s responsibility was to furnish the facilities. However, there were a number of Lamm members both Legion

& Auxiliary who worked. The Sheriff’s Mounted Deputies were also there. The horses are always a big hit. Thanks to all who worked including the Sheriff’s Dept, to make this a great day for the special guests. Oh, I understand Sheriff Howard made a visit.

I want to thank all those who worked to make our Chicken din-ner fund raiser a success.

The Leader of the nation’s largest veterans organization characterized professional athletes and other Americans who fail to show respect for the national anthem as “mis-

guided and ungrateful.”

American Legion National Commander Denise H. Rohan lamented the politicization of what used to be a display of unity at NFL games and other sporting events throughout

the country.

The U.S. Flag Code, calls on all present to stand at attention while the anthem is played.

It wasn’t political when it was written and it shouldn’t be Political today.

The George F. Lamm Post #622 will no longer host our Sunday Football at our Post until this is resolved

Denise Rohan, National Commander of The American Legion

Denise Rohan was elected national com-mander of the 2 million-member American Legion on Aug. 24, 2017, in Reno, Nev., during the 99th national convention of Ameri-ca’s largest veterans organization. Rohan of Verona, Wis., joined the U.S. Army in 1974 and has served The American Legion since 1984. Prior to her transfer to Post 385 in Verona, she served as the commander of Post 333 in Sun Prairie, Wis., where she established a Sons of the American Le-gion squadron and chartered a Boy Scout troop. She has also served as the depart-ment commander of Wisconsin.

Rohan and her husband, Mike, are both 2006 graduates of the National American Legion Col-lege and 2015 graduates of the Wisconsin American Legion College. Both have gone on to serve as department and national American Legion College facilitators.

Rohan was employed with the University of Wisconsin Madison as the assistant bursar of stu-dent loans until her retirement in 2012. She managed the University of Wisconsin Madison, Uni-versity of Wisconsin Green Bay and University of Wisconsin Colleges $120 million loan portfolio made up of approximately 200 different federal, institutional and state programs in compliance with all laws, regulations and policy. She was responsible for the efficiency and design of the computerized student loan accounts receivable system.

She is a graduate of Mount Senario College in Ladysmith, Wis., and The Collegiate Manage-ment Institute.

Rohan served the Family Readiness Group as a volunteer with the Wisconsin Army National Guard 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team and 1-105th Cavalry Squadron. She also served with the 115th Fighter Wing, Wisconsin Air National Guard Airman and Family Readiness Pro-gram.

Her theme as national commander is “Family First” and her fundraising project is the Legion’s Temporary Financial Assistance program, which awards cash grants to minor children of veter-ans who are eligible for American Legion membership. These grants help families in need meet the cost of shelter, food, utilities and health expenses, thereby keeping the child or children in a more stable environment.

Rohan has been married to Mike since 1976, and they have a son, Nicholas, daughter-in-law Angie, and two grandchildren, Sawyer and Isla. Mike is very active with The American Legion on both the state and national levels and is a past department adjutant. Nick and Sawyer are members of Squadron 385, and Isla is a member of Unit 385.

American Legion Family bonds against Hurricane Harvey

We need our families the most during life’s greatest challenges. Nowhere is this more apparent than Texas and the Gulf Coast right now.

American Legion Post 658 Commander Gary Alston evacuated his home with his family on August 25 due to the high winds inflicted by Hurricane Harvey. Along with those winds came the water.Trillions of gallons in Texas, according

to some estimates. The Alstons, that’s Gray, his wife, two sons and grandmother, have been living at the Legion post in Cros-by ever since.

Although the population keeps changing, there were 360 people sheltering at the post by Tuesday.`

“We have blacks, whites, mexicans and indians,” Alston said.” They come here without much but everybody is working togeth-er. Veterans and nonveterans. The rest of the country could learn from this.

It brings to mind the work of DeRidder, La,Post27, which served as a home to so may in its community during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina 12 years ago. Its shelter fostered such a family environment that two evacuees were marred there less than two weeks after Katrina tore through the coast.

“This is for human life, “Post 27 Commander Bill Loftin said in 2005 of the post’s emergency efforts. “That’s what the Legion is all about. These people are at the mercy of the world.”

My theme as national commander is “Family First,” and this is a perfect example of why The American Legion Family is so important. We have always been advocates for preparedness and emergency response. After Hurricane Carmille struck the Gulf Coast in 1969, the National Executive Committees created the National Emergency Fund as a pne-time project to award grants to eligible Legion Family members and posts. The program was made permanent after Hurricane Hugo roared into Car-olinas in 1989. Grants of up to $3,000 are now awarded to eligible individuals and $10,000 to Legion posts. Almost $9 million of assistance has been delivered by the NEF since the program’s creation. To learn more about NEF please visit www.legion.org/NEF

Our Temporay Financial Assistance Program is also ready to assist Legion-eligible veterans with minor children (17 or young-er) who need financial help to pay for shelter, food utilities or medical expenses. To learn more about TFA please visit www.legion.org/TFA

In addition to the devastating impact natural disasters have on lives and homes, communications often collapse when cellular towers are destroyed and satellites fail. The American Legion Amateur (Ham) Radio Club (TALARC) was established in 2011 with such emergencies in mind. With a membership of mire than 3,150 in at least 30 posts clubs, these dedicated enthusi-asts work closely with the Department of Homeland Security and other emergency management agencies in support of civil

defense.

You can learn more about our ham radio club by visiting www.legion.org/hanradio or by emailing [email protected]. And like

any other national emergency, blood donations are always needed.

A note from 1st Vice Commander, Wayne P. Sorrentino, Membership Chairman:

Thank you to one and all who have already mailed in their dues checks to the Post for 2018. Please renew online if you have the option by going to www.legion.org/renew If you need help doing this, please call me and I’ll gladly step you through the process. It is much easier for everyone when you pay your annual dues on line, and you can personally correct any deficiencies in your contact info, including phone numbers and email address. Please be sure to check all of the info which The American Legion has listed for you in their massive database. It is very important that we have your contact info so we can communicate with you more efficiently about the goings on at YOUR POST. Incidentally, if you do not currently receive your copy of the Lamm Lights, let us know through me (891-5164) or through Dominic Savarino (207-0349), Editor of the Lamm Lights, and we’ll gladly add you to our mailing/emailing list. Lots of good stuff in our monthly newsletter and you should know what’s happening each month at YOUR POST. Back to paying online: once you’ve checked all of your info in the national database, please be sure to pay your dues for 2018. The Post & Department also get notified of your payment from national, and I will personally send out your 2018 Membership Card to you immediately. Our goal this year is 408 members & with your help, we will get to OVER 100% this year. FYI: Only about 10% of all veterans that you see each day are members of The American Legion!! Imagine! If you meet 10 veterans on the street, only ONE of them is a Legionnaire. That statistic blows my mind. We all need to ask each and every one of our fellow veterans to join our organization, and to keep The American Legion strong into the future, and to help us improve the status of every veteran (past, present and future) in this country. Why aren’t ALL veterans members of the largest Veterans Service Organization in the entire country?? Don’t they know what The American Legion does for them EVERY DAY? No, they don’t know unless you tell them. So get out there, get out of your comfort zone, and help Lamm Post (YOUR POST) make it to 100% membership by our American Legion birthday in March 2018 (if not sooner). Thank you.

If you have not yet been initiated into The American Legion AT LAMM POST, please contact me at 716 891 5164 or by email at [email protected] so I can get you to our March 2018 membership meeting (usually the second Wednesday of the month). The initiation process is very simple, but meaningful, just giving you the history of The American Legion’s Four Pillars, around which The American Legion is built. You also are presented with a copy of our Post’s Constitution and By-Laws, a small flag, an American Legion lapel pin and a few other gifts. Please do all you can to get to this ceremony. It is well worth your time and we have a nice buffet put on by our Auxiliary (usually sandwiches, snacks and desserts, with coffee and tea), and of course, free draft beer after all membership meetings. All NEW members and TRANSFEREES should attend. I’m standing by for your call or email. Thank you for your membership!
