STARS & STRIPES LAMC Veterans Resource Center May 2016 By Pete Hogenson 2016 MEMORIAL DAY EVENT Program & Participant Listings LAMC MEMORIAL DAY EVENT - THURS. MAY 26, 2016 The LAMC campus community will observe Memorial Day this year, with an event set for Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 8:45 a.m. to be presented in the flag pole area at the corner of Hubbard and Eldridge. Please note that the school will be closed the following Monday, May 30, 2016 for the official national Memorial Day holiday. Please plan to arrive by 8:30 a.m. to fully enjoy the entire program, which includes a diverse line-up of college officials, student veterans and guest participants. Should wet weather be a factor, the full schedule of the event will take place inside the Campus Center building (same date and time). Federal Work Study Student Sponsored by the LAMC Campus Sheriff’s Office, California Army National Guard-Sylmar Recruiting Station, the LAMC Veterans Resource Center (VRC), Task Force 39th District Vets and Assemblywoman Patty Lopez, the event will also feature patriotic music from the Los Angeles Police Emerald Society Bagpipes and soprano Silvia Hammond. MEMORIAL DAY: TRADITION AND RICH HOLIDAY HISTORY Originally called Decoration Day, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags - Memorial Day is for the remembrance of those who have died in service to our country. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization made up of former Union sailors and soldiers. From U.S. Public Archives During that first national celebration, former Union General and sitting Ohio Congressman James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers who were buried there. This event was inspired by local observances of the day that had taken place in several towns throughout America in the three years after the Civil War. In 1873, New York was the first state to designate Memorial Day as a legal holiday. Memorial Day is celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery each year with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave. Traditionally, the President or Vice President lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. About 5,000 people attend the ceremony annually.
