Since Lambert’s Taylor Sheehan re-turned from a rigorous stay at CraigHospital in Denver, Colo., the 16 year oldhas been adjusting to life at home quitewell, and she’s still inspiring everyonearound her.

Sheehan, daughter of Brenda andChase Verschoot and Daryl Sheehan andMelanie Christensen, returned homeMay 20 just in time to attend the lastweek of school, attend her mother, Bren-da’s, wedding and Lambert HighSchool’s graduation.

Sheehan suffered a collapsed lung, crushed ribs and a spinal cord injuryfrom a vehicle accident in early March. And the continued community supportshe’s received is still overwhelming.

“Even people that I don’t know, theyjust tell me that if I need anything thatthey are here for me,” Taylor Sheehansaid. Just last week, while eating lunchat a local restaurant, she was greeted byan unknown resident who said she wasglad to see she is doing well.

“It’s amazing the number of peoplethat know her and support her,” BrendaVerschoot said.

That was evident last month whenSheehan’s family had a welcome homeparty the day after she arrived. Peoplefrom Lambert and surrounding commu-nities came in support.

“It was awesome to see everyone,”Sheehan said. “I was waiting for a longtime and then finally got to see everyone,so that was pretty exciting.” In additionto her support team of family andfriends, she even has inspiration fromfellow Richland County native CodySteppler, who was also injured in an ac-cident.

Since her return, the Lambert nativehas kept herself busy going to numerousdoctor visits at Sidney Health Centerand in Billings to get her back checked. She’s also working on her arm strength.

“I’m working out and stuff becausearm strength is a big deal when youdon’t have any other strength to use,”she said. Soon she’ll be starting physicaltherapy at the health center. She also be-gan working out with Lambert’s physi-cal education teacher, Larry Sommer-feld, three days a week.

Her summer will be filled with sum-mer school as she gets her sophomoreyear completed. Though she completed285 hours between physical therapy andschooling while in Denver, she has twosemester tests to take. But it won’t be allwork and no play as she’s found time tobe with friends in Sidney. “Now I godrive around or go watch a movie withthem,” she said.

And with the annual July Fourth cele-bration in Lambert coming up, Sheehansays she plans to attend with brothersTyler and Kyle just like she does everyyear and looks forward to the communi-

ty camaraderie.Through it all, the teen has kept quite

a positive attitude – something manypeople can take note of. “I’m very proudof her,” Brenda said, adding she’s be-come more independent. It’s not to sayshe doesn’t have her “down days” justlike everyone else. Sheehan said whenshe first was home, she’d sleep in late orlay in bed. “Sometimes I felt it was justpointless to get up because it’s like Icouldn’t do anything,” she admitted,“but then I realized I can do stuff, andI’m just as capable as everyone else ofdoing stuff.”

Her week-long, six-month check-upcomes up in October at Craig Hospital, and the teen says she can’t wait to getback to see the staff and fellow patients, all of whom have become good friends of

hers. Following that will be yearly visitsfor the rest of her life. It’s unlikely she’llwalk again since she’s paralyzed fromthe waist down. However, because of se-vere nerve pain in her legs which devel-oped following her injury, Sheehan has adifficult decision on whether to gothrough with a surgery that would cutthe nerve endings in her lower back, sothe pain would vanish. The procedurewould definitely eliminate any possibili-ty for walking again.

For Sheehan, she’s taking it day by daybut, still, she can’t help but wonder whatthe future holds. “I’m antsy to see howit’s going to be later on...” she said. “Iguess I just have to wait and see.”
