OUR VISION FOR THE YEAR During the last semester we had the opportunity to bring in and redevelop our chapter culture with the help of national members of Tau Kappa Epsilon. Our

new executive board wishes to further build off what we learned from our nationals, and work to build new traditions that actively engage the chapter.

Over the next two semesters I wish to reemphasize the importance of our connections with you, the alumni. We are looking to host several events for the alumni base, ranging from professional to casual. We hope that in these times we not only learn valuable lessons for our careers, but also gain a pointer or two about one day being a good father, a good neighbor, and a good role model in the community.

One avenue opening up in the chapter which I am excited to see grow is the addition of a Personal Development Chair. This position will be spearheaded by Joe Beste, and will strive to lead our chapter in the ways the classroom doesn’t prepare you for such as, resume creation, mock interviews, and organizational tips. This position will be looking for speakers to come speak to chapter on their professions or personal skills that have led to their success in the professional realm. If you are interested please reach out to Joe at +1 (608) 556-6676.

Our chapter has a bright year ahead of us this upcoming year, and we can’t wait to tell you more about it.

This January’s polar vortex unfortunately impacted the TKE house. On January 30 the National Weather Service reported that wind chills hit between minus 50-60 degrees in many cities across the state. A pipe in the living room burst, causing a flood in the front room. Quick action by the undergraduates and our property manager limited the damage mostly to the front room. Insurance will cover some of the damage after our deductible.

WINTER TAKES A TOLL ON THE TKE HOUSE

The TKE house was not the only building with damage from the cold. Burst water pipes and other flooding related problems damaged 28 UW-Madison buildings, forcing 180 course sections to be relocated.

The cold weather, snow, and rapid melt have also caused roof damage. Initial bids have been received and range from $8-12,000 for repairs to $60-$70,000 for a roof replacement.

Renovations to the heating and cooling system and roof renovations are part of the building renovation plan and capital campaign.

CHAPTER ETERNAL

(Note we just learned of this news in March) Roman George HiebingJr. passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016, at Agrace HospiceCare in Madison, Wis. Roman was a first generation college graduate.

He was initiated into Lambda Chapter in March 1964, with scroll #447. His advertising career began at Leo Burnett in Chicago. Roman worked on the award-winning Schlitz "You only go around once in life," and "Grab the gusto" campaigns. His graduate

thesis, "Territorial Marketing and Restaurant Franchises" and success with Brat Und Brau restaurants in Madison caught the eye of Kentucky Fried Chicken, for whom he created memorable slogans such as "Get a bucket of chicken, have a barrel of fun," and "Good bye ho-hum." In 1981, Roman formed The Hiebing Group with seven employees. The Hiebing Group (currently Hiebing) grew to be one the dominant marketing and advertising agencies in the Midwest, serving many national accounts.

Friday night was a get together at the Essen Haus Restaurant and Bar. Alumni enjoyed the Bavarian fare, beers (some in a boot) and the live polka music. Saturday a tailgate was held at the Union South before the football game.

UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN - MADISON

ALUMNI WEEKEND RECAP

The football game was frustrating where Wisconsin took the lead, then fell behind, never able to catch up. Everyone was waiting for the offensive to finally get going, but never did. Rafael Gaglianone missed a 42-yard field goal late in the game that would have tied the game.

Final: BYU 24 Wisconsin 21.

Serving as the home for 500 young men over the past 50 years, 216 Langdon is need of numerous upgrades. Numerous fraternities have built new facilities or have completed major renovations in the past five years at the University of Wisconsin. This includes Theta Chi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Sigma Chi. We need to provide a facility that is not only market competitive but can provide the memories that you enjoyed as an undergraduate.

The decision to renovate the existing facility was made after a thorough analysis of the facility, assessment of university’s housing, and an evaluation of our chapter’s fundraising. The Housing Corporation Board made the following conclusions:• A renovated house cost much less than razing

and building new.• A renovated house provided more square footage

than a newly built house, considering the overall cost of a new build, as opposed to a renovation.

• The existing foundation structure is of high quality consisting of concrete and structural steel and is in excellent condition.

• The existing house has many redeeming features, including a large parking lot, a rooftop deck, a large basement social hall, and a main floor dining room and kitchen.

• The existing house features 28 large bedrooms which can sleep two members per room. A new house, based on the financial model, would contain fewer bedrooms.

The parking lot improvements were completed August 2018. In January 2016, the City of Madison cited us for numerous parking code violations (Even though we had used that space as is for parking for 50 years). They now required lighting, paving, bike racks, landscaping, etc. In September 2017, after months of review, the City of Madison finally approved our design. The addition of storm drain improvements pushed the total project cost to $140,000.

Setting the stage for the next century of Lambda excellence on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, the Alumni of Lambda Chapter launched a significant chapter house restoration campaign November 2017.

The fundraising initiative to fund the Lambda chapter house restoration is exciting, lofty, and necessary venture. Fraters contributing to the campaign believe in the Fraternity’s mission, the chapter’s vision, and the project’s compelling need.

There are multiple ways to contribute the campaign. Contribtions to the campaign may be made as one-time gifts or pledges, pa able over five-year periods. Fraters may utilize one or more of the following to fulfill their giving decisions:

UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN - MADISON

CAPITAL CAMPAIGNSUMMARY(See details at https://wistke.org/campaign)

CashContributors can • Donate online at https://bit.ly/2Csigfu. • Simply complete the attached pledge card and return it with your check to PO Box 45735, Madison, WI 53744.

Gifts of StockMany Fraters have chosen to make contributions of appreciated stock to the campaign. There are advantages of giving stock where you avoid the Capital Gain Tax that you would ordinarily pay. The appreciated value of your securities will represent a significantly larger contribution than the actual cost of your investment.

For information on gifting securities, please contact: Michael ShindelarWells Fargo Wealth [email protected]

Matching GiftsSome Fraters have taken advantage of the corporate matching gifts to qualified taxdeductible organizations.

Contributions may be tax-deductible, as determined by law. We have created a new Lambda Chapter - TKE Foundation. The intention is to provide for tax deductible donations for the renovation project as well as future scholarships for undergraduates. We will use this fund for company ] matches and major gifts of at least $10,000. Contributions to this fund can only be used for educational purposes which would include items such as internet connectivity, networking, library, fire suppression, and study areas within the chapter house facility and, of course, student scholarships.

As of April 1, 2019, we have raised $309,500

which is 31% of Goal.

NAMING OPPORTUNITIESThere are several room naming opportunities for gift pledges of $10,000 or greater. Please contact Campaign ChairmanFritz Jacobi for more details(920) [email protected]
