FOREWORD You are now witnessing th e 9th annual Rochester
rodeo, which is not a Wild West show, but a real contest of cowboy sports.
The rodeo is · under the personal direction of Colonel Jim Eskew, rancher from Garland, Texas, who has staged many of the greatest rodeos throughout the Southwest before coming to the East.
The outlaw horses and wild steers are not trained but are like our gangsters with a mean streak in their blood that will never clear up.
The success of the rodeo depends not only on the cowboys and cowgirls but on th e stock. The outlaw

horses and wild steers get more of a break than do the cowboys and cowgirls.
In this contest no cowboy or cowgirl is permitted to ride the same horse or steer twice during an engagement, and they never know what horse or steer they draw till the notice is posted on the board, and in this way there is no chance of "fix-ing" to get a certain horse or steer.
The cowboys and cowgirls come here at their own expense and compete for valuable prizes . The management is not responsible for any accident or injury to the contestants.
The Rodeo is the world's greatest and most dangerous s'port. In conclusion, MAY THE BEST COWBOY OR COWGIRL WIN!

HOW RODEO EVENTS ARE JUDGED Rodeo fans who attend the ninth annual Roch-
ester rodeo, are naturally puzzled how these various events are judged.
In the saddle and bareback bronc riding, the con-testants are given points, and it is necessary that three experienced judges are selected, ones that are fair and impartial to all contestants.
In the bronc riding events, the better a horse bucks the better marking the rider is given, and the rules say that the first . five jumps out of the chutes, the rider. must have his spurs against the horse's shoulders, and if a rider fails to comply with the rules he wi11 be disqualified, regardless of how good a ride he makes.
In the bareback bronc riding contest, this is a loose-rope, one-hand contest, and the res t of the ride is governed by the rules same as the saddle bronc riding contest.
The judges are placed in various parts of the
arena so that the rider will be sure to spur with both feet and not on one side, then th ey compare markings, and the lowest markings on the best three r ides produces the winner.
In the calf roping and steer wrestling events, they are judged by the stop watch, and three min-utes are g iven the ropers and the steer wrestlers. and if they fail to catch and throw their animal they are disqualified.
The lowest .amounts of seconds will designate the three winners in the day money
In this contest it will be a five calf or steer aver-age, and in the bronc and steer riding contests it will be a five horse average, and any cowboy who has not been disqualifi ed will be entitled to com-pete for .the .final money.
The time consumed by the bronc rider. or steer rider is usua1ly ten seconds.

COLONEL JIM ESKEW Arena Director
T he Arena Director is the man who is r e-sponsible fo r th e fa st, snappy manner in which the Rodeo performance is unfolded to the spec-tator . It is no small job , for it must be borne in mind that the Rodeo is what mig ht be termed an impromptu performance-it is· unr ehearsed.
It ta kes executive ability to handle a hundred or more cowboy and cowgirl contes tants and at th e same time look after a couple of hundred head of stock. It takes show.manship to take a program made up of a series of contes ts and a rrange it in a workable manner for smooth performa nce.
Col. J im Es kew, th e Arena Director, is a well known T exas rancher, a form er contestant, . a nd seems to be a born showman. H e knows cattle, horses and the Rodeo game in its entir ety, and' t hat he is well qualifi ed for the pos it ion you will have no doub ts when you have wit nessed this performance.

THE RODEO To stage a rodeo for a number of days wh ere
there are a lot of contestants entered takes a lot of stock; according to the rules no contestant can compete' upon · the same animal twice during the run of a rodeo whether it is 3 days or 10 days and stock for contestants in an event must be drawn a t one time for the entire group, so that each con-testant will have a chance to draw the bes t or t he worst animal in the lot. It may take three or even four days of performances for each and every con-testant to compete in an event (called a go-round) before a purse award can be made, but th e fellow who makes his trials on the fourth day, drew his stock at the same time as the fellow who had his try the first day.
It is a great expense, and takes a lot of time to gather a go'od string of rodeo stock, especially bucking horses. Most spectators at a rodeo never give a thought as to· where the bucking horses come from or how they are obtained, they seeming to believe that a person can take most any nag, train it to buck, and call it a rodeo bucker, and on account of this false idea that so many have the writer believes that rodeo fans will be interested in a little history of bucking horses.
It must be remembered that there were no horses of any kind in America until the 16th century when the Spanish Conquistadors came ove-r, they brought the horses, and we are indebted to Cortez, the Spanish explorer, who came into our country in search of gold and to DeSoto, who came later, for leaving a great number'.of their horses in this eoun-try and thereby starting the life and ex istence of the noble equine in America.
For about three centuries the offsprings of that first herd of Spanish horses ran wild, three centu-ries of running wild and inbreeding developed a different type of horse, and while he lost in size and weight, he retained the stamina of the original

breed,. gained speed, an d developed a r esourceful-ness and animal cunning not in his for efathers.
Bucking horses, that is, good ones, are getting very scarce, because the old Spanish strain is r unning out, and there a re fewer outlaw bucking horses now than t her e has ever been during the past two centuries.
No person can look over a herd of wild horses and pick out the outlaws, that outlaw trait is dis-covered in the process of breaking, the outlaw horse being one of a certain temperament and dis-position that causes him to defy . all efforts at subjugation so far as becoming a saddle horse is concerned. The ordinary wild horse will buck for a time and quit, the outlaw will continue to buck every time an attempt is made to ride him or that he is saddled, and there are annals of rodeo buck-ing horse cases where horses have continued to buck over a period of twelve and fourteen years of active arena work.
Obtaining rodeo cattle is not so hard, a fresh supply is necessary each year, especially the calves which outgrow their usefulness in the calf roping contests and . become too large, and the bulldogging steers which after a season of having the cowboys tussle with them become arena wise and duck and dodge _as the cowboy leaps from his horse to catch their horns and so become almost impossible as bulldogging cattle. Most of the bulldogging cattle come from near the Mexican border or from the interior of Mexico where a semblance of the old longhorn breed still exists. The Brahma bulls used in the bull riding contests, come from the lowlands or gulf coast regions of Texas and Florida, and a great number- of new ones are brought east each year. ·The Brahma seems to possess that man-hating outlaw instinct of the Spanish strain of horses and many of them will go on bucking year after year.

Everything to be seen in a real Rodeo is not as dangerous as bull riding, steer wrestl ing, broncho busting or calf roping. Between the regular contests, whi le the riders and ropers are getting a breathing spell and to give time for refilling the chutes, special features are presented. Promi-nent among these is the act of J ack Knapp and his partner Bobbie. Jack, a diminutive cow-boy, four feet five inches tall, dressed as a matador, will present his burlesq ue bull figh t which is guaranteed to bring gales of

MY GIRL There's a girl from the W es t who st ands out
from th e rest, A girl in a big broad brimmed hat , Has a figure so trim and a waist that 's so slim She's the kind all the fellows look at. She wears br ight flash y clothes when she goes
to the shows, Is a p icture of rhythm and grace; A nd with eyes always dancing as her horse
keeps a-prancing, The boys afte r her a lways chase, She has eyes for them a ll, but for none does
she fa ll,
ARENA DUST It never happened before in the history of the
rodeo game, a nd may never happen again, but two rop ers in a ninetee n-day contes t at th e Madison Square Garden Rodeo last fall each roped nine calves an d finished w ith the sam e total tim e, roping a dead heat for the championship. They were J ames Kinney and Toots Mansfie ld and th e tota l tim e for each was 207 3/5 seconds.
For she's true to her love far away; And when we're t hroug h w ith this trouble, she'll
ride throug h life double F rom her cowboys she never wi ll st ray. A nd so for this r eason, may this war end this
season, So that back home again I may be, Cause the guy she has la nded, soon will have
hog-tied and branded, If you don' t know by now- w hy, it's me.
-Dick Shelton, Sl/ c.
IT'S SO!
Says Philosopher Guy Lochard. A horse can't kick ve ry well when he is pulling. He hasn't got time. None of us are horses , but the .idea applies to us just the sa me. W hen you feel like kicking, get out a nd pu ll, an d you'll fine\ that if you pull hare\ et1ough, th ere won't be a ny reason for kicking.

WANT TO LEARN CALF ROPING?-.. HERE'S HOW By Buck Doweil
If you want to be a calf roper, start roping at anything or everything, first on foot and then just sitting on horseback. starting at close distances and gradually increasing to about twenty feet. It's all right to start with a large loop, but gradually work it down to where you are throwing a loop of about four and a half feet in diameter or a little less if you can wield a s maller loop accurately; the smaller the loop that can be thrown accurately, th e better. The calf is more apt to run through a big loop or get its feet angled in same. Every fraction of a second counts in calf roping and the time taken in bu ilding a bigloop and the time taken in drawing it in might m ean the difference between a big prize and a smaller one, or no prize at all.
Care should be taken to learn to spread the loop with as few whirls about the h ead as possible. It's a bad ha bit to continually whirl the rope during the entire chase of a calf. The hand should describe two or three quick circles above the head of the roper and the loop should be let go, or thrown, whi le the palm is down and the knuckles up and the same movement of th e arm that thr ows the loop should on its return draw the rope back to help make it taut and at th e same time allow some of the rope to be paid out so that calf wcn't b e jerked clown.
A quick dismount should be made and the rope grabbed near the horse rather than to run two-thirds of the way to the calf and then have to hunt for the rope in case the calf is .running in a circle. Follow the rope clown to the calf and upon r each-ing the calf, if you are big and strong and the calf

is light, flanking is the quickest way to get the calf down, but if the calf is too big to make flanking sure, than grab the animal by its right front leg near the ankle and after pulling this foot, leaving only three feet on the ground, grab the right hind leg. lifting it and pushing the calf over. Always try to have the calf fa ll away from the direction of the horse or against t he tight rope; this makes the throwing of the calf eas ier.
W ith the calf upon its side, st ep over the a ni-mal's body w hile still holding its front foot up and well away f rom the animal's body, bring your right leg or foo t . in behind the calf's hind legs above the hock and push both hind legs forward to where its hind fee t are in position for the tie, now bring your left foot around to where you are well braced and able to hold calf in that position. Take piggin string from mouth, slip over calf's front foot , w hich you th en pull back to make cross w ith the two h ind feet and tie by making a couple of w raps and a half hitch.
If the calf is kicking and you have trouble get ting both hind feet in position it is better to push on e hind foot into place a nd make at least one wrap around the front foot and the one hind foot, t o hold while you push the other hind foot in position for the tie.
With these instructions, a good hors e and not too wild a calf and a lot of practice you ought to g et the job, clone, but if it takes you as long to rop e a calf as it does me to t e11 you how, you'11 never win any money at it.
