“Each of us has the opportunity to change and grow until our very last breath. Happy creating” – M.F. Ryan

As daunting as change can be, it also presents an opportunity to progress and grow. Change provides a fresh canvas to start over, and as we step into April, we are starting to paint our new canvas at Haircare Australia. With our rejuvenated brand rolling out across the country and the team at Head Office on the cusp of a major relocation, change is in the air. As we look to our industry and it’s ever changing dynamic, we’re starting to see an embrace of new brands entering our market that have a mutual respect for high quality hair care and the environment. We’re collectively turning our attention to the next generation of hairdressers and welcoming them into the industry through initiatives such as F.A.M.E Team and the AHFA’s and Hair Expo Awards. We hope that as we embrace upcoming change, you too can be there to enjoy it with us and relish the exciting times ahead in our forever-changing industry.

Adelaide sprung to life in October as the

masses flocked to see a breathtaking

display of South Australia fashion.

It’s impossible not to take note of South

Australia’s growing fashion scene and when

Adelaide Fashion Festival relaunched in late

2015 it certainly demanded our attention.

With a renewed look and fresh perspective

supported by the State Government, Adelaide

Fashion Festival celebrated a cornerstone in its 8

year tenure.

The four-day event provided Adelaide locals

with a program packed with emerging talent,

inspiring couture and classics from some of

South Australia’s most-loved designers. With

a host of runway shows, installations and

celebrations, the festival really was the talk of

the town. Some of Australia’s most fashion

forward media and influencers, even the likes

of Vogue Online, made the journey to the »

While fashion is at the heart of Adelaide

Fashion Festival, equally so are the amazing

talents from the hairdressers.

vibrant city to see it come to life with talent.

With so much buzz surrounding the festival,

South Australia is truly cultivating its fashion

scene.

While fashion is at the heart of Adelaide Fashion

Festival, equally so are the amazing talents from

the hairdressers, make-up artists, eateries, wine

makers and supporting partners that make the

event possible. Amongst the supporting line-up

were fellow Adelaide-born brands, evo and Clip

Joint. The renowned South Australian salon

has been tending to the tresses of locals since

1970 in its iconic salons, making the perfect

hair partner for a celebration of South Australia.

An impressive team of Clip Joint stylists led

by Creative Director Atilio Dusa were at the

helm of each of the 13 runway shows creating

some of the most memorable hair moments in

South Australian history. In what can only be

described as a match made in hair heaven, evo

co-sponsored the hair for the event providing

the versatile styling range much-loved by

editorial and fashion week stylists world-wide.

To create the tribal inspired looks at Sally

Phillips and couture classics at Paolo Sebastian,

the hair team worked tirelessly to perfectly

complement each designer’s collection. From

the plethora of unique looks on display one

of the stand-outs was Alexis George and Lexi’s

collection which was complemented with a

90’s sleek and structured hair look. However,

the absolute cherry on top of the cake would

have to be Paolo Sebastian’s Snow Maiden

collection which closed the event and left

everyone in the house speechless. Inspired

by icy, mystical landscapes and snow queens,

Adelaide-based Paolo wanted his collection

to be truly authentic with a textured braid for

every model.

For a small city, Adelaide put on an impressive

show for its guests during the festival and with

the calibre of talent only improving, Adelaide’s

fashion scene really is on the cusp of greatness.

With a great team running the event and the

State Government investing an impressive

$2 million over the next four years, Adelaide

Fashion Festival has a beautifully bright future.

F E A T U R E E V E N T

After three sell-out years, A Night of Fashion made

a return for its fourth and most impressive year to

date in October 2015. The latest addition to the

newly launched Adelaide Fashion Festival, the night was

the perfect supplement to a stellar line-up of all things

fashion. Held once again in the magnificent Elder Wing

of the Art Gallery of South Australia, the venue played

the perfect host to some of Australia’s most influential

designers.

From Australian Fashion Label’s newest womenswear

brand TY-LR, through to ANOF veteran Carla Zampatti,

the collections on show represented the pure talent

of our home-grown designers. With monochromatic

pallets broken up with splashes of colour, the Elder Wing

acted as a picture-perfect canvas. The night that is all

about celebrating the harmony between fashion and art,

ANOF has firmly made its mark as a now integral part of

Adelaide Fashion Festival.

A team of South Australia’s hottest hairdressing talent led

by none other than Australian Men’s Hairdresser of the

Year Damien Rinaldo, were responsible for the chic hair

on show. Amidst the talent from the designers and hair

team, evo and Cloud Nine were centre-stage helping to

bring the show to life. In a display of what can only be

described as the ultimate in old Hollywood Glamour, an

array of beautifully pinned waves were created on each

model. The Cloud Nine Micro Wand was the tool of

choice to create long-lasting ringlets that were brushed

out to the perfect wave. With the assistance of evo’s

mister fantastic and builders paradise the look lasted all

night and was certainly one to remember.

Harnessing the power of evo builders

paradise and love touch, Atilio Dusa and

the Clip Joint Creative Team created a

structured look with glass-like finish for

Alexis George and Lexi’s Adelaide Fashion

Festival debut.

1 Prep dry hair with evo mister fantastic and blow-dry in, smooth hair away from the face.

3 Take a section from the side of the head and smooth down to the head using evo’s bradford and builders paradise.

5 Spritz the top section with evo icon welder and smooth with the Cloud Nine Original Iron.

2 Section hair in a horse shoe shape from the recession line and clip out of the way.

4 Bring the section into the centre and pin into place. Repeat on both sides.

6 Heavily spray hair with evo builders paradise and smooth into place with bradford. Secure section with fringe pins and diffuse until set. Remove pins and finish with helmut light and love touch.

Exceptional hair. No compromises.

These aren’t just words for Sarah and

Lisa, the co-owners at Organika Hair.

Swapping sulphate, paraben, gluten, chloride

and phthalate for only natural and organic

products, Organika Hair is like the Birkenstock

wearing, gluten-free hipster – stylish, with an

environmental conscience. Sit back with a

drink, relax… guilt-free!

Ladies, why do you have such a strong environmental focus in salon? It’s a lifestyle

choice. A healthy body, a healthy mind, a

healthy planet. It’s all linked. We believe you

don’t have to compromise your health for

great hair, in fact, we know you don’t have to.

Lisa, who inspired you to open a salon like Organika? I worked in a salon for 10 years

before Organika. That’s when, I discovered

my beliefs and lifestyle were a contradiction

to my work. I was living a green life at home,

but the moment I walked into work everyday,

I was exposed to all of the toxins. It just didn’t

feel right using them on clients either.

What do you love about the Neuma range?

This range embodies everything we stand

for. It always delivers results, without the

compromise. It's leading the way in healthy

products that actually work. It’s a win-win!

How has being a Prestige Partner impacted you, Lisa? Would you recommend it?

Being a Prestige Partner has given me the

opportunity to be involved in all the amazing

events. The trip to Hobart this year at MONA

was a standout. I’d certainly recommend this

initiative.

Who inspires Organika the most? Our

clients… and I’m not just saying that. They

really are the ones who keep us motivated to

do better, everyday. We love hearing about

their lives, getting to know each and every

one, and hopefully making a difference in the

way they feel.

So, what gets Sarah out of bed each morning? Making clients feel amazing about

themselves. And the look in their eyes as

they walk out of the salon, knowing they

look fabulous. Best of all, doing this without

putting any harmful chemicals on their body.

Oh, and I can’t forget my beautiful, nine

month old son, Roman. He has a special

knack for getting me up very early in the

morning. He’s my personal alarm clock!

What are Organika’s goals for 2016? Maybe

another Organika salon – interstate this time!

Exciting times ahead for the Organika team.

Okay, knowing what you know now, if you could go back in time, what‘s the one piece of advice you’d give yourself? Always,

always, always… trust your instincts. I think

there’s a part of you that truly knows what’s

best for you. Often, we just don’t listen to it.

Follow that inner voice.

evo once again teamed up with the űber talented boys from TOME

for their Autumn/Winter 2016 New York Fashion Week show.

TOME’s winter 16 collection draws inspiration from iconic

American artist Barbara Kruger and Lebanese born Palestinian

Mona Hatoum. The colour palette of blood red, black and grey is

emulated from Kuger’s renowned newsprint work, whilst the bold

shapes and clean cuts of the collection are inspired by Hatoum’s

sharp political standing.

Championing the real life feminist this season, evo is celebrating

all hair styles and shapes, evo hair director Kenna, has allowed for

Lakmé’s heritage, grounded in artistic tradition and ties with nature, is the inspiration for the

2016 collection. At the heart of this campaign is Antoni Gaudi’s vision to look to nature for

inspiration. His view being that nature does not go out of fashion. The colour palette

was derived from imagery of Spanish architecture, art and landscapes; styled to reflect the

balance and beauty of the Mediterranean character, designed to inspire and encourage

colourists to explore and innovate.

Artists don’t just take inspiration from one area. They live and breathe it

through every facet of their existence and it comes in all forms from the

world around them. Renacido is an exploration of an artist’s true palette,

if that artist were based in the cities, mountains and waters of Spain.

The tones in Gaudi’s art, the colour of the hills and the shimmer of

the ocean were the basis of our creation.

Paper Rokk oozes cool. Exposed brick,

charcoal retro mirrors, black leather

seats and hanging lights. Paper Rokk

mixes a close-knit community, with new age

creativity. It’s a place where clients come

to socialise – the whole reason why owner

Brooke became a hairdresser in the first place.

Clients don’t sit in their chairs, head down on

their phones. There’s a collective table, with

magazines, chocolates and tea trays. And, it

goes without saying, great conversation.

Brooke, you’ve recently renovated your salon, what’s your favourite part? My

favourite part of the salon would have to be

the new colour table. Clients love sitting there,

while their colour is processing catching up

on all the latest goss, colouring in our therapy

colouring books and painting their nails.

So, what’s your fave hairdressing tool/gadget at the moment? I would have to say

the Cloud Nine Wand. It’s incredible. You can

create so many different styles and textures

with it. Gone are the days of flat iron curls –

hello, gorgeous volume waves and texture!

Big call time! What is your big hair trend prediction for 2016? We’ve been doing more

and more textured bobs. Long luscious hair

seems to be getting shorter and shorter.

Gorgeous, soft baby lights all the way. It’s

such a soft, glamorous look for summer.

Okay, what’s your favourite evo product. And why? That’s a tough one. There are so

many to choose from but one of my favourites

would have to be water killer. It’s not just your

average dry shampoo but is amazing in fine

hair to create more volume and a go-to for

creating light texture in funky fresh cuts.

What impact has being a Prestige Partner had? And why would you recommend the initiative? Being a Prestige Partner has

allowed me to open doors I never thought

possible. Haircare have created an amazing

sense of community within hair salons all

over Australia… and I was lucky enough

to join in on the business summit this year

in Tasmania. Don’t think I’ve ever met so

many likeminded creatively driven, business

owners and amazing people in my life.

So Brooke, what would you tell new hairdressers starting out? Confidence! You

can never have enough education, so throw

yourself into all of your training, listen… and

ask questions. The best thing you can do as

a hairdresser is to never stop learning and

this is why I love hairdressing so much. It’s

evolving. No two seasons are ever the same.

Whatever you do, keep your knowledge and

skills growing, too.

Dead or alive, the one person you would absolutely love to have dinner with? That’s

easy… Marilyn Monroe. I think she continues

to be the inspiration for so many colours and

styles. She’s the perfect example of a sexy

woman with class and glamour.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE H

airdressing is so much more than just hair. It takes

creativity, science, and analytical skills… and that’s

just for the hairdresser – let alone the business

owner. Beehive Creative’s Managing Director Leesa Smith

believes a combination of ongoing education, great

customer service and encouraging creativity is your ticket

to a booked out salon – every week. So, we’ve put together

10 tips to make sure your client’s next hair appointment

becomes an event that they’ll look forward to.

Page 37: Lakmē Renacido

1 NEVER STOP LEARNINGInvesting in training and education is important, no matter what stage of your hairdressing career you’re

at. For your staff, enrolling them into classes will be money well spent. They’ll gain retail analysis skills

and confidently be able to recommend products that client’s need – not just their favourite product. The more

knowledge your hairdressers have, the deeper they understand the products and the more confident they are

with the client in the chair. This, of course, paves the way to better results.

2 CREATE HYPE AND A POINT OF DIFFERENCEHairdressers, as we know, are creative souls. We need creative outlets to express ourselves. In our

everyday business, we have a lot of bread and butter clients – the simple cuts and colour touch-ups, but

this doesn’t leave much room to apply creativity. Think about entering awards to refresh enthusiasm and create

hype, add a point of difference to your business – and unleash creativity.

3 ENCOURAGE YOUR CLIENTS TO VISIT REGULARLYDon’t be afraid to give your hairdressers room to breathe and get to know their clients… it pays off for

everyone. You want your service to stand out, against other salons. Focus on it. Give your customers

professional home hair care advice, ask how they’ve enjoyed their appointment, and get to know them – and

not just by name. Everyone can do a haircut, but what sets yours apart?

4GOOD SERVICE = SALES Offer your clients a service they simply can’t walk away from. Get all of your clients together and run an

education evening, so they can learn how to use products at home. For example, they could be using

Cloud Nine hot tools, but do they really know how to apply them for the best results? Run these evenings

frequently and get to know your clients properly.

5OUTSOURCE WHEN YOU NEED TODo you waste an entire day working out your BASS? Maybe you’re ok at it, but you dread doing it.

It’s important to know your strengths and weaknesses, so you can focus on what you’re good at. We’re

not born to cover every element in small business – we’re not superhuman. Know when to put trust in others.

6 MAKE USE OF THE GAPS IN YOUR SCHEDULEThere’s always something to do in-salon. So, when there’s a gap in your schedule, encourage your staff to

maintain a clean environment, conduct online research, follow the latest trends and contact customers.

7 IMPLEMENT RULES OF ENGAGEMENT Incorporate KPI’s into your staff’s package. Invest in their career planning and follow through on their

development. Having a combination of monetary and motivational incentives will help retain your staff.

8AVOID DISCOUNTINGEven if you’ve got a free spot in your schedule, never discount (Start by using the term ‘open’ spots!).

It devalues your work and attracts the wrong type of customer. People are spending – they’re just more

selective on how they’re spending. Upsell, add value – don’t discount.

9 RETAIN CUSTOMERS, DON’T CHASE Instead of chasing new customers, retain your existing fans. Improve your pre-booking processes, and

touch base with clients that you haven’t seen in a while. Develop an ongoing conversation with clients.

Send “we appreciate your business” text messages. Launch a guest system that rewards clients for visiting

regularly. That creates ‘word of mouth’. And that’s what attracts great, new customers.

10 ENGAGE WITH YOUR CLIENTS, SOCIALLY Don’t use social to promote, rather engage. Use Facebook and Instagram to create a sense of

community. Keep engaged with your clients in between visits, by sharing photos, case studies, and

information on new products. That’s why it’s called “social”.

Cloud Nine and Prema Salon joined forces in

late 2015 for the inaugural Bazaar in Bloom

event at Sydney’s iconic Coogee Pavilion. The

Harper’s Bazaar event raises much needed funds for

the Royal Women’s Hospital to support their plight in

assisting women of all socio-economic backgrounds to

conceive. Celebrating the confidence in couture, 27 of

Australia’s most influential designers showcased their

most impressive one-off couture pieces. With the likes

of Zimmerman, Alex Perry, Camilla and Marc, J’aton,

Carla Zampatti and Rachel Gilbert on show, the Bazaar

in Bloom event was one not to be missed.

To bring the beauty of each look to life, Hair Director

Michele McQuillan for Cloud Nine, along with the team

from Prema, created individual looks for each designer’s

couture offering. Working tirelessly, the group created

everything from tousled ponytails, intricate braids to

stunning up-do’s. With the support of Prema Director,

Dale Delaporte and of course the Cloud Nine portfolio

the team was able to create an impressive 27 unique

looks, no mean feat for a day’s work.

“I was really excited to be involved in the Bazaar in

Bloom event to help raise funds for the Royal Women’s

Hospital. Working with Cloud Nine and Prema ensured

that I had the opportunity and freedom to get really

creative and put forward a large variety of stunning

looks for the show. There is a level a confidence that

Cloud Nine delivers backstage, with both their editorial

styling teams and the high quality and wide range of

their tools” – Michele McQuillan

Dreamer and “ideas girl”, Charlie,

had a vision… to create a salon

where customers can unwind and

actually enjoy getting their hair done. An

experience that’s not awkward, rushed or

intimidating. But full of warmth, energy and

new friendships. The Nest, is as charming as

the name suggests, with a striped baby blue

wall, rustic hanging lights, vintage furniture,

and flower pots. Essentially, The Nest is as

individual as the women that walk through

their doors.

So, who inspires you, Charlie? My stylists,

of course… and I’m not just saying that. The

passion these girls have… the way their eyes

light up when they’ve created something

beautiful… it’s more inspiring for me than

watching a big league hairdresser, any day.

When I know my team is happy and passionate

in their work, it really drives me to develop

the best environment for all of us to be

creative in...

What does your salon do, that’s different?Lots of things! From yoga, in-salon pop-up

shops, creative outings or, my favourite at

the moment, ‘The History of Hairdressing’

classes… we’re pretty much always doing

something out of the norm.

Okay, what is the one piece of advice you always give your clients? Take advantage of

free consultations, before your appointment

day. Free consultations are available from

most salons to put you at ease, choose

colours, styles and set your budget. You’ll

also get a feel for the salon to make sure it

matches the style you’re going for – and the

experience you’re after.

What’s your favourite Lakmé product? And, why? Gloss! It's ammonia free, toning is quick,

the shine is incredible… and we love how

intense the colours are for toning. It’s made

toning more creative… and the possibilities

are endless. One of my favourite toners for

softening roots after foiling is 15g 8/00 + 10g

Silver +2g 8/22.

What do you think you’ll be seeing more of in 2016? My bet is… we’re going to continue

with these beautiful natural looks, using a

lot of freehand techniques. But, we’ll be

introducing more rich browns with warm

reflects, bronde, soft coppers and golden

goddess tones. This will be interesting to

see… because Australians are terrified of red

heads, but nobody knows why! We’ll start

to see people dipping toes in something a

little different, which gives us colourists the

chance to have a lot more fun!

Charlie, what advice would you give to someone wanting to open their own salon?Start with ‘why’. Why do you want to open

your own business? If it’s, ‘I want to make

my own hours and make a lot of money’…

think again. Running a salon is - at least -

twice the work you’re expecting… and it’s

definitely not a get-rich-quick plan. You need

entrepreneurial qualities to run a business.

It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, that’s for sure.

But, if you love it, that can make it work. And,

then it’s totally worth it.

Since I chopped off my locks, I don’t blow-dry or fuss as much with my hair. Instead I’ll air-dry and put a bit of Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo at the roots while my hair is still damp to give it texture. – Rosie Huntington-Whitely
