Community, Mission and the Art of Listening

“Isn’t our culture ________!” “The church is________!”” I cannot stand_______” “Let me

tell you why…..” Some of us move away from conversations that begin or turn in these

directions. They are uncomfortable, sometimes we don’t have patience or time to spend,

other times we feel ill prepared for the conversation or offer an alternative viewpoint. All of

us confess something that feels like community wide exhaustion when it comes to engaging

in uncomfortable conversations. We are often bombarded on television, on-line, and at

gatherings of family and friends. When someone comes into my office or talks to me out in

public, questioning my ethic or my ability, I have learned a valuable skill. Most of my life I

have listened only in to form a reply to the one speaking. Listening is a skill that requires

much practice. I value it more that the ability to formulate a quick answer.

The one who has ears let them hear. Paraphrase of Matthew 11:15

I notice that Jesus listens, and listens deeply to those who speak. Jesus listens not only to

the sweet and kind, also to literal demonic powers. Jesus listens to the wealthy, proud,

young and old. Jesus listens to you and I as we fumble for words as we pray. What I have

learned is that to listen to someone is a gift. How often do you and I listen deeply to people

around us? There is an old saying that we have two ears and only one mouth, so we need

to listen twice as much as we speak. For some of us that is true, for others, the break in the

constant stream of speech may allow them time to express themselves.

Know this my beloved ones: let everyone be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow

to anger; for the anger of humans does not produce the righteousness of God.

Paraphrase of James 1: 19-20

Jesus did not only listen, he spoke truth to those who were able to listen and truly hear.

Have you noticed that Jesus often does not answer some questions that others ask? Do you

think our Lord knows and recognizes their agendas? Especially the religious people of the

time? Often Jesus listens and offers a parable or another question in reply, so that they

may perceive God’s truth on their own. Human beings accept God’s truth readily when we

“discover” it on our own. Have you ever known someone who accepted truth by being

forced into acceptance by another human being? Why do we believe that we are able to

change the mind of another by arguing on-line or in person? Honestly, unless we have a

meaningful relationship, how is the other person to care about or respect what we believe?

A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1

The difficult move is to accompany those with whom you disagree, staying connected,

listening for truth. If you listen to any human being long enough they will tell you truths

about themselves. Believe them. Listen and only reply and ask questions to build

understanding. Remember that like Jesus, we do not need to accept the premise of a

question and that listening to one does not mean that we agree!

Whoever restrains their words has knowledge, and the one who has a cool spirit is

one of understanding. Paraphrase of Proverbs 17:27.

God’s peace and good conversations,

Pastor Kim

I’m not quite sure how to sum up a year of memories at Lakeside in a couple of

paragraphs, because there are times when I go on and on about my time with you! As I

sit at my desk I am looking at my office wall which is covered in crosses, I decided to

decorate it this way because I remember sitting in Pastor Fred’s office, with the crosses

on his wall! Among what I look at today is a gift given to me by my “Internship

Committee,” its a cross with pictures on it, including my home church, Gettysburg

Seminary, a dove, one of my favorite Bible verses and Lakeside! There are 3 other

crosses hanging which were gifts from people there! I also have the drawing of the

church signed by the council members hanging! There are other things which were

given to me by members of Lakeside that are on my shelves. On my window sill is a

plant given to me by Jim Strobel who laughed when he told me it didn’t need to be

watered often (which is the only reason it has survived all these years)! I tell you this as

a way of sharing that our time together is something I think about often! I loved being

your first intern from 2007-2008! There are so many great memories I have! I learned

many things while I was at Lakeside! Your view of the internship program being an

opportunity to not only have someone coming to serve in the congregation, but also

being able to help form future Pastors is a healthy view to have! Because that is exactly

what you did, and many things that I learned in your midst have been helpful in my

over eight years of ordained ministry. I often talk about the Dining to Meet You groups,

I have reused some of what I taught in the Sunday School class, and just last week I

was talking about the Neighborhood Bible Study groups. I will never forget the Pig

Pickin, the Valentine’s Day dinner, the Ecumenical Lenten lunches and Good Friday

service, and of course being able to experience life on the lake! Summer worship in the

pavilion is the latest thing I am implementing in my current congregation that I learned

from Lakeside! Life has changed a lot since I first met you all, now I am ordained,

married and have a toddler! I still have my cat Belle who I adopted while I was with

you! Not only do I have my pet, but I also have many memories of enjoying life among

you, and many things I learned from all of you while I served as your intern!

Congratulations on the 25th anniversary of the congregation! I know the next 25 will be

just as packed with making an impact on others!

Peace, Pastor Carolyn (Simonds) Shank

Big News!! Our digital signed was installed on Wednesday, August 29th.

Finally!! We had multiple delays due to Warren County permitting, manufacturing and

then a contract dispute with the prime manufacturer in Texas and the local installer in

New Bern NC. Despite our due diligence we experienced a series of missed due dates.

The sign and its messaging is an Evangelism Committee responsibility. Council

approved a policy limiting messages to our scheduled program info not cutie sayings or

Bible verses. Requests for adding announcements will be managed by the Evangelism

Committee.

Bored? Missing those grandchildren? Need energizing? We have just the place for you! Renae Mizzelle is again the principal at Vaughan Elementary, and she wants your help. Tutors in all the classrooms are needed and will be greatly appreciated. Tutoring may involve as much or as little time as you have to offer…..an hour a week listening to a student read, a few hours working with a small group on skills in math or reading, or whatever you and the teacher can work out that fits both of your needs. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! If you are interested, please give Mrs. Mizzelle a call at Vaughan…252-257-6802 or Joyce Walker…252-586-5588.

Lakeside Lutheran will celebrate our year-long work for God on Sunday, September 16 at both services. Wear your yellow t-shirts with pride for the work you’ve done for our church. Some of our activities may be omitted (there are so many) but they include: food delivery, meals delivery, providing lunches for the staff at Vaughan Elementary, providing and serving lunches for John 3:16 campers at their new camp on the lake, helping at the Methodist Church in Lawrenceville with their food drive, and cleaning up the roadside near the church. God’s Work will continue throughout the year and as always, when asked, Lakeside members will say, “Yes, I will willingly do that!”

THANK YOU, THANK YOU! On behalf of David Zimmerman, Project Manager for the

Pavilion Ceiling Renovation and the rest of the LLC Property Committee, I want to thank

everyone, both men and women who assisted us in the Pavilion Ceiling Renovation over

the last several months. We have had a number of volunteers help us, and we could have

not completed this project without you. You have done everything from helping us get the

electrical permits, assisting us with wiring issues, installing lighting fans and outlets,

ordering and procuring supplies, (including lunches), handing supplies up, nailing up

furring strips, moving scaffolds, installing vinyl, moving benches, cleaning up and all other

little tasks that have been needed to get this project completed. Thanks again from the

Property Committee.

Raising up to God those we know to be in need of his touch for healing and wholeness. The fol-

lowing list includes long term concerns. There is also a list in our weekly bulletin that has more current and

acute needs. Daily prayers for all these folks are important. Please help us to keep these lists cur-

rent. If you have names to add please call the church office. Likewise, if any of these names

can be removed please let us know that as well. Regularly remember these in your prayers...

We also invite regular prayers for:

• Our companion in Papua, New Guinea, Warangoi Lutheran Church

• Our Virginia Synod, Rev. Robert F. Humphrey and his Staff,

• And the ELCA, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton and her Staff.

• All who engage in missions around the world proclaiming the Gospel globally, often in places of danger and hostility.

• In our prayers for world peace, we are also remembering to ask for God’s care and keeping for those who have been deployed to

places of potential danger around the world. Many of these are in military service, but there are also civilian agencies represented,

support staff and humanitarian workers. There are several such persons directly related to our church family for whom we invite

your prayers by name: Jason Watson, Brian Daigle, Terry Rutan, Amanda Jones, Andy Gerbing, Mollie Medearis, BJ Chavez,

Christopher Otten, & KC Jones.

Care to Share will be September 9, 2018

Please mark your calendar to remember to bring non-perishable food items to be distributed to needy

families, this time through Loaves & Fishes. Monetary gifts may be given as well. If included in

your regular offering, please designate the amount under “other” with the notation “ Care to Share.”

If making a separate donation, please use an envelope from the back of a chair in the sanctuary and

clearly mark it “ Care to Share.” All monetary gifts should be placed in the offering plate....not the

baskets on the floor. This is especially important for “cash” donations.

Thank you for your continuing generosity.
