Christmas is about New Life by Pastor Scott Ferry Cornerstone Community Church

When we think about the pro-life cause, do we ever connect pro-life to Christmas? Well, we should. Christ came to earth to be born of a virgin for one reason. His coming was to offer life to all, including those who would be born in the future. God created man and woman in His Image in the Garden of Eden. God created them to have fellowship and communion with Him. They chose to sin and God chose to prepare a gift to be born, a gift who would take away the sins of the world. This gift was given to all generations. Jesus was born.

So Christmas represents everything that is good about mankind: a King who humbled Himself, unlike the Pharisees of the day, to be born in a stable…a father who chose adoption over abandonment…two parents who risked everything to keep their child safe. A young teenage girl who placed her trust and her life in her God and bore a Son, a Savior for the world through all generations.

A seemingly unplanned pregnancy turned the world upside down because unknown to the parents, God had a plan, a sweet little baby. 2015 Fundraising Banquetby Lynne Scherschel

Our next banquet is rapidly approaching, so please mark your calendars NOW for Friday, April 10, 2015 because you won’t want to miss it. Perhaps even ask the Lord now what He wants you to prepare to give in advance as an underwriter or table sponsor or that night as a donation. Whatever and whenever you give, I can assure you that the Lake County Right to Life board of directors is very careful to steward every dollar donated to protect and support LIFE! We have consistently challenged the Avalon Manor with our over-capacity crowd, making it a record-setting event for us and for them. Consequently, you will want to call our office early to reserve your seat because reservations historically have been filled ahead of the RSVP deadline.

Our speaker this year will be Ryan Bomberger. Ryan has a rather unique perspective of the innate nature of Purpose. His biological mother was raped, yet courageously chose to continue the pregnancy, giving him Life. He was adopted as a baby and grew up in a loving, multi-racial Christian family of 15. With siblings of varying ethnicities, he grew up with a great appreciation for diversity. Ten of the thirteen children were adopted in this remarkable family. His life defies the myth of the “unwanted” child as he was adopted, loved and has flourished.

Ryan is an Emmy® Award-winning Creative Professional who founded The Radiance Foundation (TRF), a life-affirming not-for-profit organization, along with his wife, Bethany. He is very articulate, well informed, and “quick on his feet.” You may learn more about him by going to theradiancefoundation.org,

AdoptedAndLoved.com, or toomanyaborted.com. Our banquet is our main fundraising event of the year as

well as providing updates on the organization and education for our guests. It is also a blessed time of joining with other pro-life zealots for fellowship and encouragement. The banquet is a labor-intensive production; so if you are interested in volunteering to help, please call our office to let us know in what capacity you would like to assist us. Our office number is 219-838-1138, and we will appreciate your call.

GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE! Please consider sponsoring our banquet by being an underwriter or a table sponsor. Also, please think about pro-life friends and/or business associates who might be interested in doing so. Talk to them, plant the idea, and encourage them to call our office. This is another way you can support LIFE!

Prayer Support at Planned Parenthood Nets Results!by Tina Kerr

My name is Tina Kerr and I belong to the St. Gianna Molla Respect Life Group at Our Lady of Consolation Church in Merrillville, Indiana. In the month of October, we began our 40 Days of Life fall campaign where we stand before the Planned Parenthood at 8645 Connecticut Street in Merrillville to pray for all the unborn children, so their parents will choose to give them life instead of aborting them. I am writing this to give hope to all those people who pray to save the children in the womb.

One afternoon, I went to the hill to pray in front of Planned Parenthood. There were two women from the Baptist Church carrying signs there with me. As I was praying, a car drove up and a woman got out of the car and walked directly to me. I asked her if there was anything I could help her with (thinking maybe she was pregnant and needed help). She smiled and said you already have.

She went on to tell me that eight years before, she went to Planned Parenthood to have an abortion. Her boyfriend brought her there and she filled out all the papers, but when she came out of their office, she saw many people on the hill praying and holding signs and offering her help. She said she knew then that she could not have her baby killed and she told her boyfriend as much.

She told me that she married her boyfriend and she now has four children. She asked me if I would like to see the child we saved. She took out her phone and showed me a picture of a beautiful little girl with long black hair. I can’t tell you how happy I was to see this picture!

I thanked her for telling me about this, and told her that I would tell all those who try so hard to save the children in the womb, so they would be encouraged to continue in their work.

She then put her arms around me and hugged me and said, “Thank you so much for all you do! Please continue this work because it truly does help.”

A Great Day for a Spiritual Warby Len A. Reynolds

It was a Saturday in November, the 15th to be exact, where A Band of Brothers descended upon Planned “UnParenthood” in Merrillville declaring war upon the spiritual wickedness in that place. The Band of Brothers was a men’s conference held at Living Stones Church in Crown Point, where 350 men were in attendance and somewhere around 250 to 300 came to worship on “The Hill” that morning along with some locals such as the heroic baby saver, Mike Velasco.

Led by the former Operation Rescue Director, and current Pastor of Living Hope Church located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area, Keith Tucci, they asked God to forgive our country for allowing such an atrocity as abortion. They then declared the clinic defunct and void, as the men worshipped and prayed in front on “The Hill.” Seeing so many men raising their hands and praising God and then seeing them face down weeping and crying out to God to end abortion 20 minutes later was one of the most incredible events of which I have had the honor to be a part. I hope you can be there next year.

Human Trafficking Brunchby Lucy Sadlowski

As a new board member with LCRTL, it was my privilege to help with our community’s first human trafficking seminar organized by SHARE—Sharing Help Around the Region for Everyone.

The breakfast spread was amazing! It included delicious full fruit bowls, bagels, juice and coffee, hot eggs, bacon, and sausage. The Carriage Court Pizza of Crown Point provided breakfast pizza, which was the perfect finishing touch!

As we partook of the great cuisine, enlightening presentations were made by the Lake County Sheriff ’s Department and their specialized human trafficking staff as well as that of the state. I had NO IDEA what has been going on behind the scenes in our region. The presented information on what is happening, and what we as citizens can do to fight against this heinous crime against the runaway, the unwary and the vulnerable in Northwest Indiana, was VERY helpful.

The attendance at this first organized seminar was close to 150 with representatives from local government, schools, churches and community service groups. It was SO encouraging to be of one mind with a plan for fighting against these kidnappers and destroyers of lives.

There is another brunch planned for February 19, 2015 with information promised from the experts about more ways that we as responsible Hoosiers can DO SOMETHING for lives! I plan on attending, and hope for others to join us.

Telethon by Cy Huerter, Vice-President Emeritus

With Thanksgiving spirit and Christmas joy in mind, our volunteers again utilized the call center so graciously loaned to us by First Baptist Church in Hammond. Many of you shared your prayers and offerings, helping us to finish 2014 as our best year yet and setting our course for 2015 in a very positive direction. Those of you for whom we left voice messages and those we haven’t contacted yet, do call Barb at the office, 219-838-1138, and share your prayers and offerings. Thank you. Be blessed for Life!

LifeJam Concertby Lynne Scherschel

A cool, autumnal day at Cornerstone Church in Hammond was the setting for Lake County Right to Life’s first annual LifeJam fundraising concert. Seven area groups delighted the crowd with a wide variety of music. They were: Ken Tripp, Corey Girnus (Mr. Ronger’s Neighborhood), Julia Magagnotti (soloist/keyboard), Steadfast Ministries (band), Tenfold (band), Felis Mubybia (soloist, guitar – African music), Mighty Men of God (vocal ensemble), and Israel (Puerto Rican Cuatro guitar group). In addition to the musical groups, the following speakers shared information about LCRTL and its activities: Len Reynolds (President), Lynne Scherschel (Vice President), Elizabeth Morrison, and Dee Tripp. Deb Revor, accompanied by her very grateful son, captivated the crowd with her testimony of her experience with an abortion and subsequent healing.

Delicious chicken, hamburger and hot dog sandwiches were prepared by Gerry Alaniz’s Kingdom Kitchen. Fred Laud of Carriage Court Pizza and Smokey Joe’s Barbeque Basement donated pizzas and brisket burgers. To round out the menu, other concessions and drinks were offered for sale.

The planning committee for this event included: Lynne Scherschel (Chair), Pastor Scott Ferry, Pastor Mitch Tabla, and Elizabeth Morrison. Thanks to them as well as Len Reynolds and the many volunteers who helped make the concert a success.

Pro-Life Rally in Dayton, Ohioby Doug & Paula Allen

Doug and Paula Allen, Outreach Directors at Living Stones Church, led their Pro-Life team to Dayton, Ohio for the Heart for the Next Generation rally. They, along with over 200 people from churches around the US, converged on Dayton with the goal of closing down the last remaining abortion clinic in the city of Dayton.

The clinic, along with three others in the Ohio area, belonging to the notorious Dr. Martin Haskell, all perform late-term abortions. As of the 20th of August, one of the clinics—the Sharonville facility—has been ordered to close.

The team supported pickets at the clinic, the hospital where admitting privileges are rendered, and at Wright State Physicians Group, where the two doctors providing the admitting privileges base their practice. The Executive Director of the group came out to ask why we were picketing a facility that had nothing to do with abortion. It seems the other 152 physicians in the group had no idea that their organization was involved. We are waiting to see the outcome of their next board meeting!

Darkness can only exist by the permission of light. As we continue to make the decision to leave our churches and engage our culture, light will undoubtedly prevail.

Heart for the Next Generation – Dayton, Ohioby Aaron Brown, Youth Pastor, Living Stones Church, Crown Point, IN

I have grown up in a Christian home and always knew abortion was wrong. I never had a hard time saying it was wrong, and as a leader of young people, have often spoken against it from the pulpit. I have even been outside of the abortion mills on occasion, but when I went to Dayton for the Heart for the Next Generation gathering, God touched my heart with what touched His. It wasn’t a deep truth that would take twenty years or more to reach. It was simply having the Father’s heart on a new level. It just bothered me in a way it hadn’t before. It’s not that I didn’t care before, but frankly, only God could touch me the way in which He did; and it was the difference between knowing the right answer and knowing my Father’s heart. I felt angry at our culture, guilty for how we’ve spent our time, compassion for the people who were experiencing

these terrible things and much, much more. I realized that taking the time out of my schedule and spending the money to go to Dayton exclusively for this event had set the stage for the Holy Spirit to work on me while I stood for Him. It became clear that I could not speak against something to young people and not have action or passion to back it up. I am currently taking our young people to stand for life in our community, and have no plan of stopping until it is finished. A fire has been put in my heart for what is in the Father’s heart. I will keep pursuing it!

The Beauty of Adoptionby Cherlyn Lukenoff

Almost four years ago, right before Christmas, my husband and I received the news that our seventeen-year-old son was about to become a father. His fifteen-year-old girlfriend was pregnant. As born-again Christians, that feeling of innocence-lost is one that I still can’t find the words to describe. The next eight months were months of grieving at first, but then realizing that, regardless of bad decisions and disappointment, there was a child coming into this world who deserved all the love and care that every child deserves. Through the guidance of our Pastor, both families affected were able to rally around our children in support of whatever decision they would have to make. I can look back now and say I am very proud of our children as I watched them do the hardest but most loving thing they could have ever done. I watched as they placed their son into the arms of his new parents, a couple that was hand-chosen to give their son what they couldn’t. Our children chose adoption.

As one who has watched closely someone going through the adoption process, I want to help dispel the myths that surround it. First of all, if you think adoptions are the same as they were 20 years ago, let me assure you, they are not. As birth parents, my son and his girlfriend were allowed to “custom order” their adoption. They were allowed to choose the adoptive parents, they were allowed to meet and interview them, and they were allowed to negotiate with them as to whether or not they could spend time with their baby before he was given up, and whether or not they would have contact after the adoption took place. Another myth that scares away adoptive parents is the myth that at any time the birth parent can change his mind and take away the child they’ve bonded with. We learned that in the state of Indiana, once the birth parents have signed over their rights to adoptive parents, those rights cannot be taken back. Our children were encouraged to consider their decision long and carefully ahead of time since, once an adoption is final, the adoptive parents have parental rights until the child turns eighteen.

I have no doubt most children have made the right choice. As our birth grandson’s third birthday recently neared, I took time to reflect, and I was reminded of some lessons I’ve learned. First and foremost, I am surer than ever that “God works all things together for good…” (Romans 8:28). Think about it: at the same time we were grieving because of the terrible thing our children had done, there was a couple out there praying that God would send a child into their lives to bless their home. The answer to their prayers came in the form of what we may have thought was a tragedy (but NEVER a mistake). I have come to believe that the worst thing about abortion is that human beings take matters into their own hands by “getting rid of the problem,” instead of allowing God the privilege to do what He does best by making something so beautiful out of a messy situation. How it must sadden God, Who can see what is meant-to-be, to see lives cut short by human beings who can’t see past their own problems.

For his birthday, our family was invited to spend time with our birth grandson. He is a happy, healthy three-year-old who has such an infectious laugh and zest for life that lets you know he feels loved and secure. Why shouldn’t he? There are more people in his life that love him than most children; he has four parents, eight grandparents, and so many extended family members, he‘ll never be able to keep it all straight. And the immense pride I feel in my son for the decision he made has propelled him from boyhood to manhood in my eyes; I never thought I could feel such pride in someone.

If you are or know someone who is considering adoption, please let me say two things. One, with the ways adoption has changed, you will be allowed and encouraged to arrange an adoption that is best for you and your baby. And, two, you can’t love your child more than by sacrificing your own desires to make sure he is happy, healthy, and loved; after all, isn’t that what being a real parent is?

Giving, Thankful, Happyby Deb Terry

An adoptive mother of 12 reflects on the pain of her own barrenness and the great joy provided through adoption. She compares the sacrificial love of two mothers in scripture to the unselfish love demonstrated by young mothers who offer their children for adoption.

SCENE ONE: Two women stand before King Solomon, each claiming that the child before them is their birth child. The king says, “Divide the child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.” Then spake the woman whose living child (the birth mother) was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her sob, and she said, ‘O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it.’ But the other said, ‘Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.’ Then the king answered and said, ‘Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof. ‘”(1Kings 3:25-27)

SCENE TWO: Hannah, who is barren, weeps in the temple, praying to the Lord for a child. She vowed a vow, and said, ‘O Lord of Hosts,...remember me, and not forget thine handmaid but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child (boy), then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life….’”(1Samuel 1:11)

In scene one, the wise king knows that the true mother of this child in question would be willing to unselfishly give her child to protect it. And the child’s birth mother did just that. She selflessly offered her child to the other mother in order for the child to live. This type of giving requires great sacrifice. This mother had to put aside all of her own feelings, wants, hopes, plans, and desires to give her child a chance to live. This was a very difficult choice for her to make for she had to die to herself that the child might live. That’s unselfish, sacrificial giving.

In scene two, God grants Hannah’s petition and gives the desire of her heart -- a child, and she is very thankful. As an adoptive mother I can relate to the weeping of barrenness. I can also relate to the thankfulness for the children

placed in our home. Though it is very difficult, I have learned to trust Him for all things, including the guidance needed in training each of the children God has placed into our home, and given up sacrificially and unselfishly by these young mothers. Each is unique in personality, ability, and history, and each is greatly loved. I am so thankful for each birth mother who gave her child life, and unselfishly and sacrificially placed them in our care through adoption. They are each a treasure and it makes us very happy to have the privilege to raise them for God’s glory.

As we celebrate this season of Thanksgiving and Christmas, I can truly say that we are Happy and give Thanks to those who are Giving.
