Being an eco-tourist sanctuary, the region of Lake Tisza has been a pioneer in develop-ing new approaches for exhibiting nature’s treasures. Despite its short history, this re-gion has been capable every year to offer in-novative visitor-friendly services devised to tempt hikers, anglers, cyclists, campers and everyone who wishes to relax.

Lake Tisza opens new dimensions for ex-hibiting the natural beauty of the region. The

visitors sitting in a rowing-boat can watch, at a distance and take photos of birds or walk in islands linked by vaulted wooden bridg-es, or climb up bird-watching towers to scan the boundless bog lands and vast expanses of aquatic plants inhabiting the lake. They can walk in forests scattered over several-kilome-

tre-long islands or ride bicycles over distances as long as 70 km, along dykes offering amaz-ing panoramas of the land of wild waters. This is a region that has been developed over the past ten years to improve the sensation of nature’s beauty and to preserve its splendor for everyone. The results of this work have been crowned by the establishment of the Lake Tisza EcoCenter, which helps visitors submerge below the water level, and offers a 3D movie theatre to watch nature, irrespec-tive of the changing seasons. The variety of natural treasures found in Lake Tisza and its vicinity is safeguarded by a series of nature conservation areas. In this region, however, the nature conservation ar-eas provide opportunities rather than impose restrictions because most of them can be visited with the assistance of tour guides either individually or as part of a group moving around the lake in a small boat, by bicycle, or simply on foot. We are particularly proud of the buzzing avifauna and the tangly bogs in full blossom. In addition, we offer the view of floodplain forests, vast steppes and marshes.

Lake TISZa ecocenTer – The STorehouSe of naTure

The marvelous scenes of Lake Tisza and the Tisza Valley that had remained hidden until recently are now displayed on 4 floors over

2,600 sq.m, irrespective of the season and the weather conditions. The main attraction is Eu-rope’s largest freshwater aquarium used simul-taneously as Hungary’s first water zoo designed and built to display autochthonous species.

Both its dimensions and its complexity makes this system of aquaria of more than 1 million cubic metre capacity a unique facility. In addition to fishes and amphibians, visitors can study habitats found in the Tisza Valley that nature organised as mini-ecosystems.

Lake Tisza is an Ecotouristic Island of Hungary. This state­ment is made unchallengeable by the very existence of the visitor centre of Lake Tisza, the Lake Tisza EcoCenter.

After having seen rare species living in the creeks, you can watch special “ac-tors” of the marshlands and the deeper you submerge in the water, the larger the spe-cies encountered. One can marvel at pikes longer than one metre and two-metre-long

Hopefully, we have succeeded in raising your interest for Lake Tisza, this special blend of water and nature. We wish to help you choose the ideal program as well.

Each locality along the shores of Lake Tisza has its harbour but you should know, as well, that the most abounding natural environment can be found in the middle and northern section of the lake. The harbours of Lake Tisza can not be compared to those built at Lake Balaton or along the Danube. They are re-nowned for the broad variety of services offered to hikers and anglers and, in general, for the tranquil and quiet atmosphere and the proximity of nature.

ways have special targets (e.g. bird watching towers, islands, etc.) along a route which equally coincides with meandering paths and stretches over large open water surfaces. At any rate, you should not miss visiting Óhalászi Island and the northern areas of the lake. In this latter case, you can choose from two optional routes. One of them crosses a several hectare field embellished with a thick carpet of fringed water-lilies and the exotic rowing path that crosses a forest along the Aponyháti

Canal. The other route runs along the perimeter of the area, passing along canals, watercourses and the River Tisza. In ad-dition to the route directions, the diversity of the trips depend on the timing and the destinations to be visited. You can opt to make photos of the hazy glimmer of water surfaces at dawn or the romantic sunset views or observing the evening bust-ling of beavers.

Although a system of guide signs assists you in finding your way over the surface of Lake Tisza, it is advisable to hire a tour guide for the first excursion because he can help you find the best directions and call your attention to numerous places of interest and the small wonders of nature.

The Lake Tisza EcoCenter offers also guaranteed tours to be held irrespective of the weather conditions and the number of participants. Making a trip on board one of the scheduled small excursion boats raises everyone’s spirits.

A PECULIAR FEATURE OF LAKE TIszA:

ISLandS abound In every SIZe

You should not expect to see the scenery is-lands of the South Seas’ adventure movies and they do not resemble Margaret Island in Budapest, either. Some of them are too small to accommodate two people, while others are covered by awe-inspiring forests interlaced with tendrils of grape ivy. How-

ever, it is true almost in every case that their shores tend to evanesce behind the curtain of reed-beds, thus they offer only a few but romantic mooring spots. The only exception is provided by the coasts of the sluice-ways, which border the route of the roaming wa-ter-borne wanderer.

The Óhalászi Island is the most peculiar of all the large islands. The one-time pros-perous fishing village had been destroyed by floods of River Tisza squeezed between dykes built in the second half of the 1800’s rather than the formation of Lake Tisza. Today, a memorial site, a bird-watching tower and a labyrinth await tourists to this island and the descendants of earlier inhabitants living in Újlőrincfalva preserve the memory of Tiszahalász.

People unfamiliar with Lake Tisza would not presume that the numerous touristic attractions around the lake can also be found on islands, like our educational trails.

The natural landscape of Lake Tisza chang-es continuously. Quite frequently, moorlands, reed-beds and large clusters of bulrush deve-lop from one year to the next. While there are vast open water surfaces with no vege tation. This makes tourism around and over the lake a thrilling and romantic experience.

The Lake Tisza Water Trail and Educational Path can be reached from both Poroszló and the Lake Tisza EcoCenter. It is the longest and at present the most visited planked path system is Hungary designed to exhibit the waterworld from a new perspective, by means of guaranteed guided trips. One can walk above the water along the 1,500 metre long planked path system to reach birdwatching posts, resting islands and lookout towers. In addition, qualified tour guides and infor-mation signs make the 90 to 120-minute program a complete experience.

The term “educational trail” got a new meaning at Lake Tisza where the trail is not a simple row of informative signs put down in nature, but the scene of acquiring an ex­citing impression about the nature.

The “Mayfly” Flood-Plain Promenade can be reached from Tiszafüred-Örvény and, in addition to exhibiting the flora and fauna of the flood-plain forests, it demonstrates the critical phase of the life of mayflies, one of the most peculiar creatures of the fauna of River Tisza.

On the backwater of Tisza at Tiszafüred a unique park can be found. The 18-hectare ground of the “Robin Adven-ture Island” has a 140-obstacle course including a zip wire line, a 15-meter high wall for hobby and competition climb-ing, 300-400 metre long rope-slides, forest gym course and playground, minigolf, archery field, zorb, water kangaroo and many other interesting games. The chain of adventures is supplemented by two educational trails where one can get acquainted with the secret life of beavers or the birds living in nests hidden in the foliage.

Lake Tisza plays a crucial part in the bird’s life by providing places to nest, feed and rest for more than 200 species. We recommend everyone to participate in early-dawn bird-watching trips during the best periods, in July, August or September. You can see motionless grey herons standing on a stump and hold-ing, in the next moment, a fish wriggling in its

beak. Or a common coot or its quite rare kin, the spotted crake venturing to peep out from the edge of the sedge-bed. Or a whiskered tern squaring up to any rowing-boat trying to ap-proach its nest built on the leaves of white wa-ter-lilies. Or frog “clubs” bobbing on the waves caused by the passing boats. They truly resem-

ble the weapon of the Middle Ages. Also, we can see great cormorants and their rarely en-countered small siblings, the pygmy cormo-rants, in addition to great white egrets, night herons or, as of mid-July, the most charming species of herons, the squacco herons. A spe-cial moment can be enjoyed when a kingfisher, the most colorful bird of the lake, also known as the “flying gem” tries its wings above the water of the sluice-way. The clusters of nests should not be approached and, really, it is bet-ter to observe the birds undisturbed while they are eating.

Lake Tisza plays an important role in fa-cilitating bird migration. The lake and the ad-

jacent steppe of Hortobágy is considered the biggest migration centre in Central Europe. According to the estimation of ornithologists, a quarter million birds pass above and dwell in this region during the spring and autumn migration seasons, events which offer unique possibilities for bird-watching trips.

The approx. 4 metre high dykes of Lake Tisza run around the lake crossing the boundaries of 4 counties, acting as a continuous natural lookout post for observing the peerless bea­uty of this magical waterworld, Lake Tisza.

This is an exceptional route because the bicycle track runs around the lake with practically no altitude difference and is closed to public traffic. It is ideal for beginners, elderly people and for families with small children. In addition to the excep-tionally comfortable riding conditions, the cyclist-friendly environment (service stations, rent-a-bike services, child-friendly and protective gear, tour guides and 1200 km long recommended routes) makes organis- ation of short or longer trips between spring and autumn a great choice.

Members of the Lake Tisza Tourism Centre Network lo-cated in almost every lakeside locality between Tiszaújváros and Karcag are glad to offer their assistance.

The most favoured route includes crossing the lake by riding on Highway No.33. Until the completion of a separate cyclist track that is being built to increase safety of the riders, it is safe, comfortable and enjoyable to cross the lake by ferry operated at Tiszadorogma, Tiszacsege, Nagykörű and Tiszaroff where restaurants, bars and buffets await tired cyclists.

The very sight of the lake induces relaxation, but the re-al pleasure comes when immersing in the water for refresh-ment and a coolling sensation.

Free beaches have been installed at six locations around Lake Tisza. Each has its own exciting specialty or interesting

feature. Abádszalók is a classic place for the young who can enjoy their time at Tiszafüred until late evening. At Kisköre, the campsite co-operates with the local beach and turbo-slide park to offer numerous programs. Families may prefer the quieter beach of Poroszló where the bottom of the lake deepens slowly. The popular summer camps for children are considered a real paradise in Sarud, while Tiszanána devel-oped a romantic ‘Dream Beach’ for people preferring quiet seclusion.

Riding around Lake Tisza provides a special experience.

One should recognise, however, the mul-titude of marvelous natural scenery, nation-

al parks, nature and landscape conservation regions and cheerful villages that are here to be explored. The maps provided in the tour centres suggest two types of routes for the cyclists. Either you ride along public roads of moderately dense traffic, connecting small localities to be discovered or, more frequent-ly, along dirt roads or the top of dikes for people wanting to discover real off-the-beat-en-track nature. We recommend these lat-ter routes only to experienced cyclists riding trek bicycles, in dry weather.

A shorter or longer detour could reasonably be inserted in our bicycle itinerary, heading towards the Heves Plain, the borsod Champaign­land, the Hortobágy or even towards Nagykunság.

The no-traffic zones of asphalt-coated roads built on the top of emergency reser-voirs to diminish the risk of flooding, pro-vide a new opportunity comparable with the cycle treks surrounding Lake Tisza and add-ing approx. 100 km of high-quality tour routes in the vicinity of Tiszaroff, Pusz-tataskony, Kunhegyes and Tiszasüly.

South-west of the lake, ferries oper-ate between Tiszaroff and Tiszasüly or Fegyvernek and Nagykörű provide an oppor-tunity to cross River Tisza.

In the course of cycling, we can also vis-it other localities and landscapes, which are less renowned but have some interesting characteristics or attractions. It is worth rid-ing to Karcag, the capital of Nagykunság, to taste the local mutton-stew or to see places of interest in the Borsod Champaign-land.

In addition, we have several arguments to say that horse riding really must be tried in this environment.

There are only a few equestrian farms in this region, but they offer ideal riding pro-grams for everyone, such as riding camps for children or lead riding for novice adults. One thing is certain: anyone sufficiently experi-

enced for participating in a short ride should not miss out on joining a lakeshore “hoof wetting” or a trip organised to discover the nearby marshlands. A trip like this gives you the feeling of unrestricted freedom and you can fall in love, for ever, with the steppe and the shore of the lake.

In hungary, there are not many options to take

part in riding trips in more remote parts of the

country. however at Lake Tisza, this is possible

and visitors can enjoy being part of exciting horse

riding events, which can not be experienced

in riding centres in the suburbs of big cities.

A trip like this gives you the feeling of unrestricted freedom and you can fall in love, for ever, with the steppe and the shore of the lake.

Lake Tisza is contiguous to Hortobágy, Europe’s largest steppe. This fact, in itself, is sufficient to remind us of the possibilities for horse riding.

Advanced riders can ride on horseback around the lake. The 100 km route can easi-ly be covered in three days. Unlike the prog-rams offered at other places, here you can enjoy breaking into a gallop neck and neck with eight to ten other horses, occupying the greensward that stretche beside the dikes, crossing the river by ferry or taking a bath in the river.

We can feel the overlapping of vari-ous ages when the hoofs of our horses thud against the bridge of the Stepped Weir at Kisköre, riding on Hungary’s largest hydro-electric facility, while using one of the most ancient “means of transport”.

In connection with the organization of the tour accomodation options include nomadic campings or hotels of either quality categories.

The equestrian farms can be found around the lake and among the members of the Lake Tisza Tourism Centre Network, in Tiszafüred, Tiszaörvény and Tiszaszőlős.

This is a unique way to explore paths hidden in the maze of riparian reed-beds and on the way many possibilities can arise for listening to the tune of nature. One should head for Poroszló Bay or Tiszavalk Bay to explore the most diverse natural environments of the lake.

More than 50 species of fish live in the unforgettable natural environment of Lake Tisza. One can fish for most of them in almost every season of the year.

Although angling means for most people line-fishing standing on the shore, there is the opportunity here to try it sitting in a flat-boat that can be paddled to hidden spots, as well. One can store or hire fishing boats at every harbour of the lake.

The lake is a unique place for testing fishing methods and for looking for the most suitable fishing sites. Nowhere else can such variety be found!

One can startle giant catfish lying in the mud of Tisza as deep as 20 metres out of their early dawn slumber. One can spin asps twirling in the water of the sluice-ways or can check the result of having thrown food in the water for feeding common carps near the edge of reed-beds or can try catch-ing some of the big tenches swarming in the lake.

Even young and novice fishermen can successfully catch some of the billions of breams and that experience can en-thrall them to become fervent fans of this sport and to learn to restore their peace of mind this way. To remain on the safe side, hire a local fishing guide in the ports.

It is worth stopping or even staying for several days in this youngish, buoyant and sporty town, particularly to try the advanced Medicinal Bath and Spa, where the thermal water can help cure arthritis, chronic gynae-cological and urological illnesses. Owing to its stress relieving effects, the water also of-fers pleasant relaxation to people looking for some rest from the stresses and strains of everyday life.

Guests can choose from three pools of var-ying water temperature in the stately building.
