TheLake Poetswere a group of Englishpoets inhabited theLake DistrictofEngland United Kingdom at the close of the nineteenth century. They followed no single "school" of thought which was known to have existed. They were named, only to be uniformly ridiculed , by theEdinburgh Review. They are considered to be part of theRomantic Movement.

The three main figures of what come to be known as the Lakes School wereWilliam Wordsworth,Samuel Taylor Coleridge andRobert Southey. They were associated with several other poets and writers, includingDorothy Wordsworth,Charles Lamb ,Charles Lloyd, Hartley Coleridge,John Wilson, andThomas De Quincey.

The beauty of the Lake District has inspired many writers beyond the core Lake Poets. These include their contemporariesBryan Procter,Felicia Hemans, andWalter Scott, as well as the labouring-class and slightly laterJohn Close, who catered particularly to the growing tourist trade. Other poets includeJames Payn, andNorman Nicholson.

Recollection of the Lake PoetsRecollections of the Lake Poetsis a collection of biographical essays written by the English authorThomas De Quincey. In the originally published essays by De Quincey inTait's Edinburgh Magazine between1834and1840, he provided some of the earliest, best informed, and most truthful accounts of theLake Poets,William Wordsworth,Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Robert Southey, and others in their circle. The essays collectively "form one of the most entertaining ofLakeland books.
