INSIDE
By Bridget DowdFor Lake Chelan This Week
In 1981 a chorus was organized to perform at the
Manson Apple Blossom Festival. A woman named Cora
Hartley came up with the idea that the chorus could
sing a Bach Cantata and they could host a “Weekend
of Bach” at the Methodist church.
Cora had a long career as a musician and music
teacher in California where she taught piano, voice,
harmony, analysis and opera at Occidental College in
Los Angeles. She and her husband retired to Manson
where she was amazed by the incredible musical talent
in the Chelan Valley.
She began organizing regular concerts at her house,
which she called “Sundays at Three” with both local
and visiting musical talent. As a musician and music
teacher, she shared her love of song with others, and
after many gatherings, the good times paired with
catchy tunes evolved into what is now Bach Fest.
This year marks the 33rd annual Lake Chelan Bach
Fest and it is in full swing with 23 musical events
throughout the area from July 11 through July 19.
“The music is just so beautiful,” Bach Fest
Co-President, Ruth Rogers said. “We attract so many
wonderful and able musicians. It’s the music that
attracted me [to the festival] initially, and it’s the
music that keeps me going.”
Over 100 musicians from all over the country and
Canada come to Chelan to perform.
Rogers said the festival’s attendance has grown so
much in the past few years that all of its venues, except
Riverwalk Pavillion, have been “maxed out”.
She said this festival has something for everyone and
both of the co-presidents agreed that you don’t have to
like classical music to enjoy the festivities.
The quartet performs at a different winery nearly
every day during the festival, which is known as Music
on the Vine. For those who prefered a steaming cup
of joe over a glass of wine, an “Evening of Jazz” was
hosted at The Vogue on Saturday July 12.
Rogers said the name Bach Fest is a little misleading
because it isn’t all classical music and very little of it is
music composed by Johann Sebastian Bach.
“People listen to music on the radio all the time,”
Bach Fest Co-President Kerry Travers said, “but when
people are actually able to hear a live performance ... I
think it really brings the community together.”
Travers said the Young Musicians Concert in Manson
on July 13 is a popular event for families. The festival
board also organizes interactive programs for children
of all ages on Tuesday and Thursday, July 15 and 17
at St. Andrew’s Church in Chelan.
“I hope that (Bach Fest) continues in the future and
the we can continue enriching the community with
music,” Travers said.
The event will come to a close with the grand finale,
which is the Pops in the Park concert at Riverwalk
Pavillion on Saturday, July 19. Unlike past years, this
year that concert will be offered for free to the public,
however donations will be accepted.
Other concerts and events vary in ticket prices, times,
and locations. For a complete list of events, tickets
prices, and other information about Bach Fest, visit
bachfest.org or see the events calendar on pages 3-4.

For Lake Chelan This Week
A perfect day-trip hike that can
kill an hour or two, or last a whole
afternoon, depending on how leisurely
you want to take it. Whether you’re
new to hiking or travelling with kids,
this hike is easy-to-follow, well-
maintained, and doesn’t skimp on the
pretty views.
First of all, park at the trailhead,
which is inside the Lake Chelan State
Park boundary, along the South Shore
Road. You will need a Discover Pass,
which you can get at discoverpass.
wa.gov or by calling 866-320-9933.
If you’re not much of a hiker, you
can get the day pass for $10, but
the annual pass for $30 is a much
better deal and grants you access to
camping and hiking in Washington
State Parks for the year.
From the trailhead, the path moseys
through both arid landscapes and cool
forest groves. There are two routes to
follow, the more scenic trail on your
left and the more forested trail to your
right. Both lead up to the top, which
offers stellar views of the lake below,
and plenty of rest areas to stop and
enjoy the scenes while munching
some trail mix or rehydrating.
Whether you kill an entire afternoon
resting in the shade and seizing the
photo opportunities near the peak or
whether you speed through it, the loop
will take you back to the trailhead
where restrooms are available. You
can always go again and see what
the other path holds if you’ve still got
some energy, or you can hit the lake
and cool off after your hike.
