Hello from Commodore. We have had an excellent first quarter at the club. Lots of sails on the water. Remembering our goal for this year, we have had two new members join and more prospective members asking. The new members are bringing in or buying boats to keep at the club. To generate more interest, we have done a spot on TV and are working on a write up in the paper. We have had two successful work parties and the club grounds are looking good. We are continuing to look for a suitable contractor to do dredging and pier repair. Meanwhile, we have done some cleanup around the piers and some repairs. We are in our first series of Wednesday night races and have had good turnout for the races and hot dogs after. There are lots of great events planned. We are looking forward to a great season. We Sailed a Scot

By Lydia Fontenot and Danielle Standefer

It was a beau"ful early Saturday morning, and by early I mean 6:30 early. A*er stopping for coffee and breakfast and the boat loaded up

and ready we were off on our adventure to our first out of town sailing event. Nerves were racing but the an"cipa"on and nervousness made the

excitement more exhilara"ng. Once we finally arrived to at the Pelican Yacht club we were greeted by the friendly people, this eased some of the

nervousness we were feeling. And so we began to set the boat up by pu4ng the mast and boom up along with the rest of the essen"als and

headed on over to the skippers mee"ng, (which was another first for us as we have never sat in on a skippers mee"ng before.)

Time to put the boat in the water; this is of course a*er the course was set. The wind was blowing the sun was out we just knew this

was a perfect day. First things first we had to get the boat over to another dock, so with Sco; and Danielle preparing to paddle to the other dock

the wind suddenly blew them off to the opposite direc"on. As I watched from the dock they prepared to pull the main up to sail on over to the

dock in a smooth fashion. Finally we are ready to get out on the water. There were three Scots, a y-flyer, and 7 to 8 sunfish. We raced on a Flying

Scot owned by Sco; Cesar who has been teaching myself and Danielle how to crew and run the boat. With the sails up and an"cipa"ng the race

to start we were ready. The Scots were first to start the race followed by the others.

The first race was a bit shaky on the start. We had not realized the horn was blown to start the race so we were slightly behind on

star"ng. Heading towards the windward mark Danielle began talking about a strategy for running the spinnaker. This was our first "me running it,

other than our prac"ce run before the race which wasn’t really good. Rounding the windward mark we prepared ourselves to get the spinnaker

up and running in a fast but smooth fashion. Smooth and fast were certainly not what we managed to do; however, we managed to get it up and

flying with slight difficulty on ge4ng the spinnaker pole in place. We get situated and are slightly sa"sfied at ge4ng it up fairly well Sco; no"ced

a change in the wind so prepared us on what we would then do to switch the pole to the other side. We decided Danielle would do the switching

of the pole. Once she began changing the sides the wind immediately changed direc"ons again. This was not fun and slightly scary, but Sco;

stayed calm and instructed her to move it back to its original place. It was a very shaky run but we managed to pull forward and place second in

the first race.

Once the sunfish crossed the finish we were preparing for the second race to get under way. A*er our first race mishap on the "me of

start we were most certainly more prepared and ready and we had a much be;er start. On the way to the windward mark we had a scare as one

of our compe"tors flipped their Scot and watched in shock as it turned completely over, mast under and everything. Sco;, myself, and Danielle

decided it was best to check and make sure everyone was ok so a*er looking at the other Scot and seeing as he was doing the same thing we did

a quick tack and headed towards the flipped boat. This really had everyone’s hearts racing. Reaching the boat the skipper sat on top of the

bo;om of the boat and waved us the other direc"on saying everyone was ok and to finish the race. With the assurance of everyone on board

being safe and unhurt we tacked to head back toward the windward mark to finish the race.

Rounding the mark Danielle prepares the spinnaker to be pulled up smooth and quick. And off we go! What a smooth team effort. Re-

lieved we did an amazing job at ge4ng it up more smoothly then the first a gust of wind comes and pushes us faster. Of course as fast as our ex-

citement builds the wind completely died down and we slowly began to make our way to the finish. We placed second again. At the beginning of

the third race only two Scots were le*. This decided to have the sun fish start with us this "me. We were in posi"on to take the lead when Charlie

had a nice gust of wind push him ahead of us. The second lap we chose a different route by following the sunfish. This really helped us close the

gap in between us and the other Scot. We were s"ll unable to catch up to Charlie who for the third "me took the win.

Overall the day was perfect for a sailboat race. We did a good job even though we didn’t place first we had a wonderful "me and

learned quite a lot. Charlie played the wind much be;er than we did and had be;er starts but it is something that we learned and know for next

"me to fix and get be;er. With the boat all packed up and ready to go home we ate a good meal that was prepared by the yacht club members

and cha;ed a few moments before heading back out on the road. The experience was unforge;able and we can’t wait for the next race.
