Lindsey Elkins who was

inducted last year and

chapter.

The Kappa Iota chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda national adult honor society held its annual induction ceremony

on April 23rd in Edmondson Parlor. Inductees include (clockwise from top) Victoria Singleton with Dr. Doug Flor,

Catherine Hanson with Professor Sally Neal, James Odom with wife, Professor Anna Odom, Lawanda Davis (not

pictured: Professor McMullen), William Nelson with Dr. Jon Birkeli, and Amanda Goodwin with Professor Monty

Strickland. Family members and a favorite professor were invited to the ceremony which honors the 10% of eligible

students who have completed 40 institutional quarter hours with at least a 3.4 cumulative GPA.

Congratulations,

From the Director

In September we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Evening College. While we’re still a young program, we have

much to be proud of as we move into the next ten years.

Graduation was extra special this year. Not only did we have 20 students marching across the stage, we had

three of our earliest Human Development majors (Mariea Campbell, Felecia Dunson, Brandy Barnes) earn their

Master in Education degrees in Curriculum and Instruction.

Our faculty have facilitated wonderful co-curricular events including a night at the opera last year with Dr. Cal-

laway, and a night at the High Museum in February (thank you, Professor Barrientos). It is good to get together

outside of the classroom, isn’t it?

We’ve come a long way in terms of building community and had our second Christmas party in December.

Karaoke, anyone? And don’t forget the tailgate parties during football season.

Lots of creative learning in our classrooms, such as celebrating Robert Burns birthday on January 25th with a

special poetry reading , tea, and scones! Kudos to our Evening faculty for the fine work that they do and their

commitment to Evening College.

You are participating more fully in the life of the College. Ricky Smith served on the Social Council this past

year. We’re working with the Honor Council officers and advisors to think about how we might best participate

in that body. Our Evening Student Advisory Council is active on the campus and in the community, coordinat-

ing drives for Harmony House, the Human Society, and participating in March of Dimes for Babies fundraiser.

The life of the College includes Convocation, Honors Day, and Baccalaureate. It does my heart good to see how

your attendance has increased over the last few years. The first two rows of seniors at Convocation this year

were all Evening students. Keep it up! You work hard; you deserve to enjoy these special events and to be seen

in your rightful place in the senior class.

Speaking of special events, my thanks to Ramona Burden, Terish Copeland, Hazel Crowe, and Brenda Poole for

serving as ushers during Commencement this year.

You are being recognized for your academic achievement. It is no longer a surprise during Honors Day to read

your names on the Dean’s List, Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities, and national honor societies.

See page 4 for the complete list of EC honorees.

We are mid-way through the first the Degree Completion Program cohort in Public Health. A second cohort will

begin in September and new DCP programs will be added during the next 3 years.

The first 10 years flew by; I’m excited about the next ten. (By the way, you did surprise me last fall with the gift

card and plaque—I was smiling for days.) You know that I appreciate you and what you bring to our program.

Thank-you for being a part of Evening College.

Evening students met with President McAlexander this past fall.

Did You Know?

. . that the Evening College office has a book of

scholarship resources for you to review? Kenya has

been researching financial aid opportunities

through various companies and foundations. Come

by and check it out. And if you have information

about possible scholarships, please tell us so that

we can add it to our book. Many of these scholar-

ship applications are student-friendly, requiring

only a transcript, a cover letter, and a brief essay.

It’s well worth the effort if you are awarded a grant,

allowing you to utilize fewer loans.

. . .And speaking of loans, please remember that the

loan refunds you receive from our financial aid of-

fice are for tuition, books and school-related ex-

penses only. We urge you to be judicious in accept-

ing those refund checks. There have been more

than a few students who are now closer to reaching

their loan limit than they are to receiving their de-

gree. The financial aid office will give you sound

guidance; please ask them if you have questions.

Future Evening College students? Genesis Altovise-Waltaria Jackson born to

Altovise Harrilson in February.

Kyzer Yates McGhee born to Kim McGhee in

March.

Henry Bartlett Washington born to Christy Wade-

Washington in April.
