President’s Column Holiday Greetings The December meeting of LGS will be held jointly with SPWLA on Wednesday, December 17th, at the Petroleum Club from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Our own Tim Bennett will pre-sent “Foundered Shelf Edges—Seismic Expression of a Frio Example, Louisiana.” Tim has expanded his GCAGS talk with additional data. The information is germane to all who are in-terested in the geology of the Gulf Coast. The LGS Board met the evening of December 3rd, at the UL Museum of Geology as the guests of Professors Borrok, Mar-tin, and Duex. The highlight of the tour was the fossil of a gi-ant camel discovered by Dr. Martin’s team. I urge everyone to visit and to support the Museum of Geology. The Museum is housed in the Lafayette Museum of Science and Planetarium located downtown on Jefferson Street. The LGS President-Elect, Bill Finley, is the instructor for the UL subsurface mapping project. Bill is requesting suggestions from the membership in selecting the fields that the students will map as part of the class. Barry Womack is developing a field trip centered in the Denver area. The trip will be in April or May 2015. Jerry Yunker is coordinating with Barry and details will be forthcoming in Jan-uary. Happy Holidays and a Prosperous New Year to all. See you at the luncheon. Craig Glassinger

DECEMBER LUNCHEON PRESENTATION
Foundered Shelf Edges: Seismic Expression of a Frio Example, Louisiana
Timothy Bennett Orbit Energy, Inc.
Abstract*
Foundered shelf edges (FSE) are a geomorphic event that can be sudden in occurrence. They are caused by a rapid shifting of the shelf edge landward. Various geologic features are formed with the failure of the shelf into deeper water. These include slump blocks, ramping, and erosion. This new minibasin then results in an accommodation space that is filled with slope fans, proximal shoreface grainstones, and pro-grading wedges. Capping the sequence is a highstand deposit that is more regional in extent. A well developed FSE in St. Landry and Acadia parishes has previ-ously been documented. Frio-aged incised valley formations have fed into and filled this FSE with deepwater material, shallow shelf proximal material, and prograding wedge deposits. A cross-section through the various parts of the FSE is shown here in Figure 1. A proprietary 3D seismic volume was acquired in 2012. This 3D volume exhibits the various characteristics of the foundered shelf edge fill previously described by Ewing and Vincent’s (1997) subsurface interpretation. Visual examples of incised-valley fill, proximal grain flows, prograding wedge, slope fans, and deepwater shales will be pre-sented, supporting the previously-described model that was based on subsurface information only (Fig. 2).

Hydrocarbon exploration drove the acquisition of this 3D volume over the Frio foundered shelf edge. The seismic data confirmed the subsurface correlations showing the foundered shelf edge fill is very much like the subsurface interpretation. The seismic data clearly illus-trate slump blocks, proximal grain flows, and deepwater slope fans. The variable nature of the fill has shown most traps are stratigraphically controlled. Documented models of foundered shelf edge fills tied with the seismic volume has assisted in the development of numerous explor-atory targets.

Biography Tim Bennett, CPG#5632, CES#3174. Tim is a working exploration geologist with 35+ years on the trail. He originated from New Jersey, received a BS at Farleigh Dickinson Univ. and then got in his car to drive to Oklahoma, where he was enrolled to attend OSU. He got a flat in Dayton, OH, and was absconded by a group of professors trying to find warm bodies for their recently opened graduate school at Wright State Univ. A couple of years later, he was holding an MS in Geology/Geophysics, back in his car and heading to Lafayette, LA (and he really thought Louisiana was a suburb of New Orleans). His work experienc-es include Union Oil Company for 20+ years, then Independent when oil hit $12.50 back in ’98. He has consulted for numerous companies as an independent, even holding the fame of being with a company that went bankrupt during the oil boom of 2006! He is now with Orbit Ener-gy, Inc. these last seven years prospecting onshore SW Louisiana. Now with the latest commodity price swing, he just might find himself back in the car driving to OSU to get his room deposit back. Beer money’s where you find it.
