This critical assignment, I will design, analyze, and evaluate a leveled learning center which supports student comprehension based on my Read Aloud text from CA#1. I will provide differentiation of my activities based on 4 learning levels: Low, Medium, High, and 2nd language learner. Students will be called out “not so randomly” and assigned an activity based on their learning level.

DO:SAY:THINK:

UNDERSTANDING CHARACTER WORKSHEETI Do: Teacher will reread the story and have students describe the pictures that are

illustrated. We Do: Teacher will guide the students to summarize by telling the most important events, such as: Why did Amy’s mother want her to go to bed? Or Why did Amy want to stay up?You Do: Students will work together on this worksheet by drawing Amy or her mother doing something, saying something, and thinking something. They will present to the class their findings once everyone has finished with their assigned activity.

Rationale:Listening to stories read by teachers is enriching to a student. The more the story is read, the more the student will understand it. By having them draw the pictures, they can explain what they want to say without the words. By showing the class their worksheet and explaining it, they are displaying their comprehenion and fluency of the story.

Finding word meanings based on context clues. Selected students will work in groups and try to find the meaning of the selected words based on the context clues given to reading by creating posters to be displayed in class. The station will be set up for them. They will be provided with paper, crayons, glue and safety scissors. They will use their thinking caps to create posters explaining the meaning of the the selected words based on the context clues in the story. They will show it to the class at the end of the activities and then it will be displayed on the walls of the classroom to help other students understand context clues.

Rationale:

Using context clues is one way to determine the meaning of a word in a text When we do not know the meaning of a word in a sentence, sometimes we can use other words in the sentence to and its meaning. By creating posters for the classroom explaining context clues to describe a word displays their understanding for vocabulary and their ability to keep on task and be creative.

Computer TimeThe teacher will select her high level learners to work individually on the computer. They will be using the website http://www.internet4classrooms.com/skill_builders/sequencing_language_arts_first_1st_grade.htm to play games about sequencing. This will give them ample practice with the topic.

Page 12: LAE 4416-CRITICAL ASSIGNMENT 2

RATIONALEUsing computers in the classroom allows students to be more engaged on the given topic. These students have demonstrated their ability to read and comprehend the story so using technology to help advance their understanding of sequence is important.

Choral ReadingSelected students will join the teacher around the reading table to choral read with the teacher. It is important to take interest and change certain strategies to help our 2nd language learners. “In guided reading lessons, teachers not only model strategies but transfer the gradual release of responsibility for pre-, during-, and post reading strategy use to students”

Page 15: LAE 4416-CRITICAL ASSIGNMENT 2

Rationale: 2nd language learners have a hard time keeping up with the lessons because of their language barrier, that is why I would use guided reading time to work individually with them. During this session, we will work on phonics comprehension, fluency and vocabulary.
